New Apple TV model

a few FAQ's we need to iron out

is the A17 Pro chip good enough not just for Sep 2026, but for the next 5 years+...

will a price point over 200 (£/$/€) be worth it

will this sell in higher numbers than previous models and actually make it into the consciousness of the "normies"

and compete in any metric against the Amazon Fire TV Stick/Google Streamer & Roku

what can they possibly be eager to show us on a product launch that courante be done on a press release and have put this on sale up to a year ago - is Siri AI really going to be as big for the TV as they think?

is the lack of a HMI Stick/Device or Pro box going to be an issue

will this actually support all the audio and video metrics we want it to at launch
or will this be a software update issue or completely unavailable due to it being based on old 2-3 year hardware

The current (ATV4K G3) is closing in on the 4-year mark. It has 4GB RAM which, for the most part, is more than adequate with an A15 Bionic processor (same processor as iPhone 13P/PM, Mac Mini 6), and still performs very well. It wins most of the YT videos comparing the ATV4K against the other streaming boxes.

The current price ($199/249) is a bit of a sticking point for many, but given the robustness and performance of the device, along with the long-term support (the first gen ATV4K was released 9 years ago and still performs well and has support from Apple).

For my money, the clutter-free, ad-free interface and overall speed/performance makes it the clear winner in the streaming box market, even at Apple's increased price point.

It currently supports most of the audio/video options/codecs, and despite it's "hobby" status (per Steve Jobs' statement in 2007 and reaffirmed by Tim Cook in 2010), I don't see that situation changing.

I don't see the need for a watered-down, relatively crippled HDMI stick, and further don't see the lack of same an issue now or in the future.

Finally, given the 9 year support for the ATV4K platform, I don't see less than 5 years support any new device moving forward. The first generation ATV4K is finally losing support with tvOS 27. Of course, there will be features that don't appear on some of the older models moving forward, and it's still pretty much an unknown what Apple is/has done with the Siri/AI stuff in the new model/tvOS, but I am convinced that it will be worth the investment.

I also expect Apple to price the new devices very close to the current pricing, and we will see the third generation models get "clearance" pricing as they are phased out.

We will know much more in a few weeks.

yeah, i don't see the need for a stick. For that, you airplay from your phone to a TV type deal. Gotta be almost all TVs do that nowadays.
 
One major benefit for me of Apple TV is the Spatial Audio enhancements specifically for AirPods. I do think they should have released this a year ago though, especially if we're going to have to wait another 4-5 years. I expect Apple will update it more frequently than before, maybe every 2 years.

I was hoping they'd change the remote, it's not great to use, but leaks so far suggest no changes to that.

an improved remote in any way would be good as long as it is an improvement & not a change for the sake of it unless its a cost saving measure such as different materials that doesn't impact on the user.

a stick can stay in and you or anyone else can just use the device then without the faff of airplay and having ur phone out. the stick HDMI version could be a 20cm HDMI attached to a credit card type sized device that could stick to the back of the tv it doesn't have to be in the same form as a firestick or Roku stick, if thermals are the big issue.
its the power we want from at least the 17 Pro but newer preferably.

17 Pro is still in my opinion an insult regardless of the device
especially when the device is launched in the same window as the newer A20 Pro chip

3 year old chip is a bad decision,
i don't expect or think is suitable for this new Apple TV Box/Device/Stick to have the A20 Pro but it should be more capable

for instance 4x120 isn't supported until the A18 Pro and not even on the A19.

This wont be a 2026 Apple device it will be a bits and pieces from 2 yrs ago device with software that deserves better, kind of ironic that the software will be the hero!!!
 
May be with the apperance of an apple home hub it is no longer of such an interest, but what resources needs an atv used as home hub for a complex home?

I don't see any situation where the much anticipated Home Hub will provide streaming capabilities... so based on that, the ATV will always be of interest
 
What I can't understand is why the Apple TV 4K (and new HomePod Minis) have been held back so long. These products already have a market, even if they are smaller than other Apple devices, so they didn't need Apple Intelligence and Siri AI to be in place to work. In fact, releasing them 12-18 months ago would have given Apple a chance to market them twice. At launch highlight the current benefits (faster chip for games & UI navigation, better on-device Siri understanding, better WiFi, better audio & handoff for the HomePad etc), which would likely sell a decent number of units to fans like us. Then, at the WWDC 26 demo how Siri AI can work from these devices and say "coming to the Apple TV 4K this Fall." This would let deves start to create apps for TvOS that can tap into this so there is a range ready for TvOS 27 launch.

The A17Pro still puzzles me - I get it as they must have planned this model for years and have a heap of binned A17Pros (perhaps with even fewer working GPU cores than the iPad Mini varient) available. I'm guessing the follow-up Apple TV will launch within a year - likely using the A20 with 9 GB RAM to enable the more expressive Siri voices (surely a must-have for a voice-driven system?)

My guess is they want to showcase all Super Siri can do, which means a whole home enivroment if they do the Apple Home table thing. So to show a flow from your phone to that to the tv and to that with facetime etc. It makes sense to a degree. Why release soemthing in early 2026 when all the cool stuff doesn't come out till the end of the year.

Do I think it was worth holding back for Super Siri? Hell no. Siri would have to go Super Sayan 3 to make it matter at all to me on AppleTV.

For appletv, nothing. In general, more AI stuff. Ai this. ai that. AI based attempt to understand what we say. 1 chance in 20 of understanding a Scottish accent. Up from 1 in 21.
