You used the term "surveillance nightmares"

To me having a television operating system keep track of everything I watch and how I watch it and using/selling that information to whomever they see fit to whomever they see fit is a surveillance nightmare.

If that doesn’t bother you that’s great for you.

I find it hard to believe 90% of America will pay for $150 bucks for a break out box when they can get the same or "good enough" on their smart TV or $20 Roku.

I’m not the US, but I doubt 90% of anyone would pay for any particular thing. Not sure what your point. I doubt 90% of Americans will ever buy a Mac either and yet they still keep making them

Again, if people prefer to pay with their data, and/or by being a captive audience for advertising, that’s fine by me

I’m willing to pay out of pocket to not put myself in that position

My point is what it was when I made my first comments. I am surprised there is enough demand for Apple TV's for Apple to keep making them, and I doubt there is at the price point. They are hanging on. I loved my Apple TV, but for the price, they are almost obsolete and if you think Apple is not watching what you are clicking on then you are drinking some sweet Apple cool aide.

If they sell to 10% of America, I think they'd be reasonably happy with that market.
But they aren't Carl. They do not have 10% market share. I know no one who has an Apple TV on their TV (not that I am the keeper of market data, lol). They have smart TV's with the same crap or they have Roku's or similar cheap boxes.

And basically everyone I know has an Apple TV hooked up to their TV. Now, with those two pieces of data, we can infer that 50% of all the people on the Earth have Apple TVs. Isn't anecdata cool?

You were the one who suggested the 10%/90% numbers.

Apple’s business model is selling hardware (and now also services.)

they don’t rely on user data for revenue (thus the price point of the hardware
Moreover, they bet a considerable part of their reputation on privacy and not spying (vs companies like Google and Amazon that get tons of revenue from data collection and advertising and thus have a huge motivation to spy on you), such that if they were caught doing something creepy, it'd make a massive dent in their stock prices and market valuation - they have solid financial reasons not to spy - it's literally in their self-interests.

Yeah, their deal is, "we sell you really good hardware/software for really high prices, and we make our money up-front (unless you want to subscribe to our streaming service or other services)". That's why I'm willing to have a HomePod in my living room, but not an Amazon Echo or Google Home device.

"Smart TVs" are completely different from Apple TV. Smart TVs are just surveillance/marketing platforms to monetize consumers. Their function is to monitor, analyze, report, store and utilize your behavior to make money (either by selling the data itself or optimizing marketing to you over the platform). Apple TV is a premium consumer electronic device for users who value a seamless experience without ads and with more (although not perfect) privacy. The interface is significantly better than Smart TVs. There will always be a large market segment willing to pimp out their lives to corporations in exchange for "free" or cheap services. Those who can afford not to don't have to.

Been holding out for the next model for *checks Buyer's Guide* nearly three years now. I'm guessing any new features probably won't be worth the wait?

(As for why I didn't just buy the last model, my main use for it is local streaming and I didn't have my library set up at the time)

Cool, with WiFi 7, I can watch a 12-minute YouTube cat video in only 5 minutes.

Seriously, I think a TV box is the only case where no one will notice the faster WiFi.
It’s not about being faster it’s about latency. This will help a lot for people who stream games through Xbox game pass or locally from their pc.
