I picked mine up on Friday at launch, and I really like it. It certainly has a more complex layout that the earlier versions.

My main gripe is that I can constantly picking up the remote upside down. It's too symmetrical and the flat/gloss differentiation doesn't really tell the functionality apart.

I agree with the remote. They could have added a Apple logo to the bottom half to differentiate

The one small thing I liked was the initial set-up... loved that it used the settings from my iPhone to set all the network and AppleID settings. Saves a ton of time. BTW... the list here is great. Apple should have a built in tutorial App that walks you through the shortcuts.

Otherwise... Love it... but not impressed with HBOGo App... they did some odd changes and it takes some time to get use to. Games are cool and love the ease of subtitles. Looking forward to software updates, I'm sure more SIRI functions will be added.

Perhaps you should visit Texas for a couple weeks.
I hear the Fifth Ward neighborhoods are lovely this time of year.

I wish google had a document like this for their new youtube app. I can't figure out how to do half the things the old app used to do...unless they're not there, which is also a possibility.

Could not agree more! Youtube on iPhone and iPad have a really bad UI/UX. I just want to go back to the last video I viewed so I can see related items I glanced etc...

The only thing you can pair with Bluetooth is audio devices and game controllers, by design. It isn't a problem pairing.

Even in the Remote app on the iPhone or iPad this new AppleTV doesn't show up and I can't do anything except using the new remote.

The Siri Remote can power on/off or adjust the volume of your TV and speakers over HDMI-CEC or IR. In some cases, this pairing process is automatic after setup, or manually configurable in Settings > Remotes and Devices > Home Theater Control under the "Turn On Your TV with Your Remote" and "Volume Control" menus.

I cannot figure out how to power on my TV with this remote. What button am I supposed to press when the TV is off? Sometimes it powers up, sometimes it doesn't. There is no "power" button, so it doesn't always work. I just start hitting various buttons and eventually the TV comes on. I've spent a few minutes each time and still can't figure it out.

Also, with searching --- how do I enter text into a search field when keyboards don't pair? Do I really have to use the Siri Remote to enter text? I've tried talking to it, but I can't search things like YouTube by doing that.

So Siri can't search your local music library or your local video library? Sounds to me like it is just a vehicle to promote iTunes purchases and not true search. If that is the case, then I don't really see the benefit over ATV3.

The last gen appletv had a pretty decent youtube client. The new one I cant figure out how to see related videos when paused, skip to the next video in a play list etc.

I wish there was a way to have more than one user logged-in at a time. My boyfriend purchased a ton of content before we moved in together so we have to go back and forth into settings to have access to our content. I'd also like to be able to purchase things and not have to remember to go into settings and make sure its under my name. I noticed that when you purchase content it tells you the AppleID you're logged into. Why can't they give you the option to change users there? It seems Apple assumes every user lives with one bread winner in the house.

If you hold down the touch pad, the TV should power on.

What they don't tell you about Siri is that you cannot search your home movies with it. Even if you label them all "movies," Siri will not find and play a movie you've added unless it's already on the screen. So if you have a huge collection of DVD's, you must scroll through them all in order to play any of them... or re-purchase your movies from Apple. I think I'll be returning mine and buying a Roku, thank you very much.

It's not perfect, but if you're in your movies list (Computers -> Computername -> Movies), Siri will play what you say. I discovered this by accident. I had an old movie and wanted to see if it was on Netflix too, so (while in my movie list) I asked Siri to find it and she started playing the one I had in my list.

My remote will turn the tv OFF when I put apple TV to sleep but it won't turn it ON when I wake it up. Any ideas? Probably not supported I guess?

I don't like that fact that you can't skip songs like you could on the old remote, Especially when playing radio. Everything else on the new remote is good. Also Siri can't do anything with music. iPhone remote app doesn't work with it either.
I know it's really annoying the remote app doesn't work. If you want to skip songs, just place your finger on the right side of the touch surface. you will see the song progress bar showing up on the screen with the next button highlighted on the top left of the bar. Just click down on the touch surface and you can skip the song.

Haha! Yes this definitely needs to happen. I’m hoping they let you type with Siri on the Remote soon. Unless you can already do this and I’m missing something!?

I hate the new ATV because of this lack of functionality. I purchased three, spent an hour trying to get it configured, boxed it back up, plugged my old one back in, and took all three back. For people with non-simple and unique passwords this new ATV is a nightmare. Perhaps it would have been a little easier if my iPhone would have found it via BT, but that didn't work either! I'll reevaluate if/when they allow the Remote App to control it. Copy/Paste from LastPass is the only way I'll be able to sign in to the various accounts that I have in less than an hour per ATV.

Maybe I'm too paranoid with my accounts and passwords for Apple perhaps.

So you spend 3 hours setting up and returning the new ATV yet you don't have 15 minutes to enter your login/passwords for your Apps? LOL.

The new 'keyboard' for the ATV sucks, but unless your passwords are hundreds of digits I don't see why the hell you won't just take 15 minutes to enter them.

Apple has provided the tools for syncing setting across devices via iCloud for years now. But it is up to the developer to implement it.

I have a long apple password, and it's a total drag entering the damn thing on the ATV. On the old ATV it wasn't a problem because I didn't buy anything on the ATV; I'd buy on another device.

When it first asked me for my password I looked over at the remote for a TouchID sensor. No such luck. That would have been much, much better.

FYI, my Apple ID password is 18 characters long. It's probably one of the most important accounts I have, besides the financials ones, so I'd rather keep it mostly secure.

Not necessarily. The Siri Remote can be trained to control your speakers' volume via IR, but there's no way to train it to turn those speakers on. This is regrettable with IR-controlled speakers like the Bose Cinemate II which power down automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity and will only turn back on with a power command. As a result, it's impossible to control everything with just your Siri remote, since you will periodically need another remote to turn the speakers on.

I think everyone needs to stop thinking of the touch area as a digital d-pad. The faster you swipe, the faster the cursor moves. If the letter you want is far away, quick swipe to it. If close, slow swipe or tap the extreme edge (gets you one space over). Also, the long press on a letter for capitals is a useful tip. As much as everyone likes to complain about change, the new layout is better for the new interface.

That said, lack of a compatible iOS remote app or keyboard support are completely valid complaints.
Quick swipe works great on the Siri remote, but doesn't seem to be possible with a gaming controller.

Good luck with all the overheating that Roku 4 causes... because, ya know, software can always be updated and enhanced.. features can always be added... but hardware malfunctions and overheating chipsets, that's a much harder problem to solve remotely.

I do legitimately wonder if apple will index home videos for siri eventually.. I'm not so sure if they will. But the Plex app might have that covered anyway

I use AirVideo for my videos at home, and haven't tried using Siri on it yet. I guess I'll try tonight and see.

The new Apple TV launched on Friday in several countries around the world, giving early adopters a chance to try out the fourth-generation device for a few days now. The consensus opinion is that the new Apple TV is a worthwhile upgrade, particularly because of new features such as the App Store, Siri, and tvOS user interface, with lots of potential to get even better in the months and years ahead.
