the search isn't something i am SUPER EXCITED about...this is something that could have been done with typing years ago.

I hope this isn't a KEY FEATURE
I take it you haven't tried to search for a movie on the current set top boxes from Uverse, Comcast, and directv. IT IS HORRIBLE, like the 1980 technology

If true, and the rumored 4k roku and 4k amazon fire are released, I won't be getting an apple tv. Stinks if true. I want to watch Daredevil, Sense8, Bloodline, and House of Cards in 4k.
You'll be waiting a really long time since it's not really 4K and more like 1080P Plus....

I personally will wait till true 4K is here because a real 4K screen will be the size of my entire living room wall and that would be some crazy Sense8 on that screen.

The fake 4K does look a bit sharper and more defined, but a lot of that is in the display technology and not in the video itself. I just have a feeling 4K early adopters will feel some major sting in a few years.

I can't wait!! My ATV2 is really getting on in age, although has been great. Hopefully with it running a more complex version of iOS there will be a jailbreak team on this to allow for more openness.
If the App store includes apps like Kodi (XBMC) or Plex, then jailbreaking the ATV4 won't even be necessary.

I think the set top TV market is going to get too fragmented.

Want Prime? You'll need Amazon

Want itunes? You'll need AppleTV

Soon we'll have 10 of these little $39-$99 (soon to be +$149) boxes on top of our TVs to get everything we want.
But you don't have that many hdmi input on your TV.

You can go through a receiver with multiple hdmi inputs. My Onkyo has 8 inputs and 2 outputs and I've almost used them all. Two are in the front so they aren't very usable permanently. I think my TV has 3 so that makes 11 hdmi inputs

Simple, get an HDMI powered splitter that switches to whatever input is powered on. I've been doing an Apple TV and a Blu-Ray player like this for 2 years without any degradation in the output

Unfortunately I'm seeing new ATV as just another streaming box at the moment. IMHO Xbox One seem to have more innovative approach towards on-demand and live TV. I truly hope new ATV will bring in some real innovation. Unfortunately jail broken ATV2 seems more "innovative" at the moment and this is very sad indeed.

If it's just search then... not really worth an upgrade. Even with Siri.

What would the storage be for? Presumably most of it would be streamed content.

Well people generally dont fill their phones with content and yet 16gb fills awful fast with games and other apps.

Apple is set to introduce the next iteration of its Apple TV lineup at next week's September 9 media event, alongside the expected announcement of new iPhones, and a previously rumored feature is gaining additional traction today with a report from BuzzFeed claiming the new Apple TV will have universal search functionality, letting users search once and get hits from multiple sources, not just iTunes.

Universal search feature will reportedly be a "cornerstone" of the new Apple TV, allowing users to, for example, search for one movie across services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and iTunes, among others. The ability to search for actors and directors will also be included in the search options, and won't limit users to just movie or television show titles. The report also claims that the new Apple TV will "start" at a price point of $149, hinting that there could be more expensive models with perhaps the possibility of expanded storage capacities. The $149 retail price does line up with previous rumors that pegged the Apple TV of launching with either a $149 or $199 price tag. The company has been said to be keeping the third-generation Apple TV, currently priced at $69, as an entry-level option.

Along with Siri integration, the next-generation Apple TV is rumored to feature an A8 processor, a touch-pad remote, and an App Store with an SDK available for developers to create apps. The new box will be aimed at more than just video consumption, with recent rumors hinting that the newly designed remote control will include motion sensors to support "casual" gaming experiences.

Update 8:52 AM: According to a follow-up report by 9to5Mac, the new Apple TV's onboard storage will be in the 8-16 GB range, and the touchpad remote included with the box will be black rather than the silver seen on the current Apple TV remote.

I have several Rokus 3s; Apple needs to have a TV bundle that is better then Sling TV, For me to be a buying the new Apple TV box.

Oh yeah? Do you know that even 1080p bluray discs are compressed to hell because otherwise they wouldn't fit on the disc? A 2 hour movie at full resolution uncompressed would take hundreds of gigabytes of disc space.
So stop lecturing us about videophiles who care about picture quality when they are using physical media which are compressed at a 10:1 ratio or larger.

are you really trying to compare streaming to physical media?

I have a Comcast X1 box. the setup i use for that is nowhere close to 1980 technology.

Perhaps the early 2000s and prior was horrible. Heck, up to 2010 in our area Comcast sucked. but that is miles away from the new search functionality. when i search for a movie or show name it will list latest episodes, any on my DVR and any on OnDemand. it will show recordings scheduled too. and then list a "just like this" or whatever the genius thing is, any actors/actresses and info on them and other shows/movies.

Agreed. I can't speak to Comcast, but DirecTV is pretty easy with the HR-34/44, and the IOS app makes it even better.
