I don't care what this costs Apple to make. I would rather my order just get filled. It's been a week and I don't even see that it's shipped yet...
The Remote App is amazing...however, I've noticed in the last 2 days that the "menu" button at the bottom of theTV controller won't respond, meanwhile, all other touches and gestures work perfectly. Anyone else experiencing this?
I noticed that as well. It seems to happen after the iPhone's screen turns off. The solution is to close the app and reopen it. I think it's a bug.
Almost all DVDs come with some kind of copy protection (which Handbrake or MacTheRipper usually don't care about), CDs often come without copy protection. That would make a legal difference, probably enough difference for Apple not to advertise it.
...in Chicago, $99 is $111.38 with 12.5% sales tax.
Simple plan... make little to no money on the device. Make money on apps and content.
160$ = 100 funny looking L's
They did you a favour.
It was pink before the fire.
GEEZ. When I used to live in Virginia Beach, VA sales tax was 4.5% and there was a tax on food. (REALLY LOW sales tax).
I live in The Panhandle of FL now and the sales tax is 7.5% but we have no taxes on food.
12.5% is just CRAZY!
It does not matter how cheap Apple makes the Apple TV device.
If it doesn't have a DVD drive so that I can play my collection of DVDs, which cost a lot to build up, then I don't want it. Furthermore I frequently rent DVDs because doing so is cheap.
Just as important, I don't trust any company to not censor or exclude content. Many of the best documentaries are not available via iTunes or Netflix because these big corporations are tightly connected to banks and whatnot that don't want the public to hear dissenting views.
If Apple wants to innovate (don't they?) they will put a region-unlocked DVD player in the Apple TV.
And a recording capability.
I have two of the original type AppleTV's, and the thing I hate the most is how unresponsive the UI can be at times. It can take 30 seconds to respond to a click on the remote. I'm not sure if that's because I'm syncing to my iTunes and I have a HUGE media library there, or if it's just overtaxing the processor (I'm hooked up on GigE, not wireless, so that shouldn't be the issue).
I'd replace them just for a better UI... and Netflix is a nice bonus.
Reviews or comparisons anyone?

App's on an TV would make me buy this. Right now, I just use my iPod to watch movies on my TV. It is simple and easy. I would much rather stream them to an TV but I need more from the device to justify
Whar kind of apps could you possibly need for your TV?
sillypooh said:I say this is great but I never like cost estimates on parts especially for Apple products. What about the cost of research that goes into these things, for the chip, OS, design, UI design and overall engineering? Not to mention generally good quality of material.
For me,
R&D costs + $64 >>> $99 per unit.
Again bravo.
At the end of the day, I'm all for an 'Apple tax' on some products, if such a thing even exists (I don't personally see it so blatantly as some other folks).
Why are you guys acting like this a gift from apple? It's not about the devise it's about all the **** you're going to purchase with it.. Duh?
That is not accurate, AFAIK. The court cases and laws that give people in the US the right to space and time shift their media do not have limits other than it must be for personal use. For example, it is legal to copy a CD to your computer and then copy the songs again to your iPod even though that means you now have three copies of the media. The same rights extend to DVDs unfortunately the government let lobbyists do an end around the law by passing the DMCA thus making it illegal to break/circumvent copyright protection schemes. Recently the US Copyright Office changed the law so it is no longer illegal to break DVD encryption if the footage is going to be used for educational or critic purposes, but there was no change w/regards to personal use. Hopefully that will change in the future though. That's not exactly it. CD's copy protection rules allow for one digital copy to be made, DVD's does not. That is the legal difference.
