Commercial is well done by a famous director. What I don’t care is the concept behind it.
IMO, when working out the last thing I want is to be interrupted by a call. I like music but definitely do not want to talk to anyone on a watch. It takes away from being there while practicing whatever exercise you are doing.
That’s why I have no desire for the LTE AW.

Here is my Qualm:

I actually could justify using LTE with the Apple Watch, however, I can’t justify the $15 it will cost me additionally on my carrier bill month with the added fee of $10 and taxes, and to me, that’s more than I’m willing to spend just for the sake of having some notifications and other features. I really would like to see Apple and the carriers corroborate to implement some type of plan that would be more attractive to the user.

If you think about how expensive cellular monthly bills are already, and then you add another $12 to $13-ish on top of that, that’s not very attractive for something that somebody may infrequently use with the LTE function. I know it has its advantages for taking a call and leaving your phone behind, or streaming your music to your AirPods, etc. but I still wonder if the consumer wants to spend this type of money for something that they may not rely on as much as they think. And I think the additional cost can be offputting to want to take advantage of the LTE capability.

I may not have understood the AW4 and cellular abilities properly, but I thought your phone still needed to be turned on and available via cell or WiFi for the Apple Watch’s cell phone abilities to work. The phone didn’t need to be close, but wherever it is it needed to be on and connected to either a cell or a WiFi network.

Biggest reason I didn’t get the cell enabled watch, and if I’m wrong then an Apple Store sales person blew the explanation and cost them a little money as I would have canceled the cell service for my iPad and used it instead for the watch. But if the phone has to be on I didn’t think it was worth the money or the cell cost.

I'm curious as to where this was filmed. Possibly Tenaya Lake and the trail leading to Clouds Rest in Yosemite?

Yes, you could have done that. (**In the US at least..)

GPS + Cellular
"It gives you the freedom to send and receive text messages, answer phone calls, receive notifications, and stream Apple Music and Apple Podcasts — even when you don’t have your iPhone with you."

While I don't necessarily care for the ad, I will say this. I recently upgraded to a Series 4 from a Series 2. The ability to go for a run and stream Apple Music, still receive calls and texts, notifications, etc., and not take my phone with me is more than worth the extra $10-$15 dollars a month. Plus, my cellular provider is still offering a $60 credit for activating the Watch. If you can't afford it or don't think it's worth it, there's a simple solution. Don't purchase an Apple Watch with cellular.

Did I see that right? Was it touting the freedom to not accept calls—calls that she's paying ~$10/month to receive?

I usually also decline calls when I go for a run, but wouldn’t have expected the ad for the cellular functionality to decline the call when it was the only function she needed cellular for (not counting the navigation)

The Series 4 is right up there with AirPods for me as one of the best products they've made in a long time, I leave my phone at home now when running, music streaming, exercise tracking, messaging and making/taking calls on the move is a breeze with it.

Yeah but it took them 4 iterations of crap and it’s still not cloud based without iPhone.
Apple has become a joke but the consumers seems to love half baked products.
[doublepost=1550676443][/doublepost]The ad is very poorly directed. The girl is a huge talent wasted for a total uninspired bad cutted time waster. What’s the purpose of the watch in this video?

Apple today released a new Apple Watch Series 4 ad named "Flight" that promotes the "freedom of cellular."

Directed by Jonathan Glazer, the one-minute spot shows a woman running on a windy day when a gust suddenly elevates her into the clouds, where she dances freely in the air before falling back into a lake surrounded by mountains. She then receives but declines a call on her Apple Watch Series 4.

Glazer, an award-winning British director, worked with World Champion air dancer Inka Tiitto to choreograph the performance and bring to life the feeling of freedom and weightless movement, according to Campaign.

The ad will premiere during the 2019 BRIT Awards tonight in the United Kingdom.

or just take your phone with you on silent mode... When I go for a jog I just put mine in silent and turn off data.
Simple, no extra hardware needed, no extra SW to update, nothing extra to charge, no more bugs, crappy interface, extra bills... I am trying to stress less (that is the real killer) and the less buggy technology (including from Apple nowadays) the better. I stopped looking at my heart-rate on my Garmin HR+ during exercise because it was not useful - not inaccurate, just not useful.
I might have a Casio stopwatch for getting a rough idea of my 5k time.
As to the ad - wow, I have no idea why I should buy an Gen 4 AW... because I want to somersault and ignore calls?

What I was told is that I didn’t need the phone with me but wherever it was it did need to be on. So if I’m in Chicago and my phone is home in Nebraska I could make/receive calls if the phone in Nebraska was on, but I couldn’t if it was off.

That may not be accurate, but I asked several times since that situation didn’t make much sense to me, and that’s how it was explained. Since I bought it on release day there wasn’t a lot of online information to confirm or deny that this was true.

I used the same Chicago/Nebraska example I used above and was told that the phone had to be on and connected to either the cell system or WiFi, since Verizon does allow WiFi phone calls.

Honest Q: why is taking the phone an issue? (NB I own an SE)

Apple ads used to be better. What happened, did they change the marketing/ad team?

Not going to pay extra to be able to talk via watch - i already have a phone, and when exercising nothing is so important that i have to answer to a call. If i know that i must be able to answer, i can carry my phone with me.. otherwise, the phone stays at home when im out.

Until i can replace my phone with a watch entirely, then i can get a cellular version of the watch and ditch my phone...
THIS!
I didn’t use the LTE on the S3 so I got a WiFi/GPS S4. Why pay iPad LTE prices for a tiny screened watch that is linked to your iPhone.

Once the watch is completely independent of iPhone I will buy and use it since I rarely use my phone as a phone anyway and have a work phone. That said I’d love to have my iPad Pro connected to the Apple Watch for when I need to type or use a bigger screen.

I too would probably reject a call from work if I were just picked up off a mountain by the wind, tossed around like a plastic bag, and thrown into a lake. Gotta take a few minutes to absorb all that.

The call was from “Mark” but we know what you meant...

Not a Dick Tracy fan I take it.;) I'm pass the stage where I want a watch phone. Now I want a glove phone where you can make a "call me" hand gesture and talk into your pinky and listen with your thumb.

Anyhow. I don't know much about art. Because of that deficiency I could not understand that ad at all.o_O The only thing I could see that she's an superb dancer with incredible body control.

Exactly this. For something I'd use occasionally, I can't justify the cost every month. My cellular bill is enough already.
I would love to have it, but carriers are squeezing enough out of me as it is.

I own an iPhone X but I like to leave it at home when I’m not working. When I’m walking my dog or out for dinner, I’d rather be in the moment than be tempted by my phone.

But in this day and age, people are expected to always be in reach and there are privileges to being connected even if you don’t have a large screen to get lost into. A connected Watch can give you directions, it can let you coordinate meeting with friends, it can stream music or a podcast on your way there and it can alert you of breaking news or settle debates by asking Siri about a topic. Other apps like Things and my calendar remain in sync and yes, I can take an important call if need be.

An iPhone does a lot of what a Mac does, but it doesn’t mean that you only have to own one. There are tools that are better suited for different circumstances. And yes, there is this sense of freedom when you’re not anchored to your phone but still have the peace of mind of being connected. You’ll have to experience it for yourself to understand it. For me, there’s no going back.
