Impressive. A15 chip. 128GB max storage. USB-C remote. But with all apples efforts to improve the ATV sure some will complain. Also it starts at $129.

The same people that complain about Apple's base storage, they can't fathom that 90% of the people really just have wifi and use their iPad/Macbook to browse/internet and have their photos on. They don't need ethernet or more storage. In the news thread folks are upset Apple dropped the LAN port in the base model.
Impressive? Nah, it's basically a new model with a different chip that does nothing that the previous model can't already do. I love my AppleTVs, but this is far from an impressive update.
Gaming?????I still find the pricing strategy lacking. They would have done much better dropping a $99 apple 4k and keeping the chip the same as the 2nd gen 4k, and you get the upgraded chip with the larger storage option. I would have thought their strategy was to get people into the Apple/ AppleTV+ ecosystem.
Zero incentive for people with either of the previous Apple TV 4ks to upgrade... but I doubt that was their goal.
mine too, it was odd that a brand new device (latest generation 'til 8AM today) is so laggy!I’m happy about the upcoming much faster single thread speed. I hope it speeds up transitions. A lot of times when playing video on my A12 device, if I hit the back button, I get a black screen for like a second or two before I see the launch page again.
I guess... I'm definitely not in the Apple TV gaming demographic, so you might be right.Gaming?????
I wonder if a lot of that is the current state of Apps available. Depending on the app I can see major lag. HBO Max is an exercise in frustration, and I've noticed Netflix getting slower over time. Although I'll have to admit it's all pushing more through the streaming pipeline than ever before (4k HDR10 streams with your choice of audio codec)mine too, it was odd that a brand new device (latest generation 'til 8AM today) is so laggy!
Well, this sounds like Framerate Switching. This can't be solved by a faster CPU.I’m happy about the upcoming much faster single thread speed. I hope it speeds up transitions. I'm the same. Although I do like the the starting price point has dropped. If/when I have to upgrade, it's at least a better price than the previous $199.Totally agree. Both the first and second generation ATV 4K's we own are still trucking along and we have no issues whatsoever with them.
Agreed! Ordered to replace my 2017 ATV4K.Impressive. A15 chip. 128GB max storage. USB-C remote. But with all apples efforts to improve the ATV sure some will complain. Also it starts at $129.
The 2015 Apple TV HD, you mean? That one that had 100Mb ethernet. That cost $149 yesterday. In the news thread folks are upset Apple dropped the LAN port in the base model.
Apple TV+ is available for everything. They skipped right over $49 Apple sticks and deployed AppleTV+ on every other platform and smart TV.I still find the pricing strategy lacking. My 2017 4K will spin trying to open apps if there are more than a few open. It’s not my internet because the internet flies on my other devices.I still find the pricing strategy lacking. I think the storage is for Apple Arcade games.Increased storage makes no sense to me when you still can't store purchased Apple TV content on the device locally.
I think the point was just to get a more efficient chip in there so they can remove the fan and go to passive cooling. That makes it cheaper to manufacture so they can lower the price (and finally discontinue the ATV HD since they can offer this at an even lower price point). It seems like putting a Ferrari engine into a Mini. There's nothing in demand that calls for the power of an A15 or requires 128 GB storage. If it were a March/April launch I would be expecting a massive announcement or Apple Arcade push at WWDC, but with an October launch this really seems like an odd product to launch - if it's for gaming, then go full force and add M1 (leaving a A12/A14 version at a lower price for people who aren't interested). If it there's no gaming push coming, what is the point of the A15 power (A14s are still being produced for the iPhone 12 and iPad 10 so not out of production)?
