This is driving me insane. I'm scrubbing same way I've been doing for the last 100 years with an ipod and the video keeps going backward and forward. Why doesn't it continue scrubbing? Who came up with the idea of that thing?

I havent hated something so much for so many years.

It may look like an iPod Click Wheel, and should function like a click wheel, this is just a circular trackpad surrounding a circle trackpad.

Bottom line is that this is more of a change of shape than a change of function. (And thats a shame because Apple revolutionized the industry with a clickwheel so this implementation just feels lazy).

it also needs to be coded into the app.
some apps work already (Netflix, appleTV+, showtime, HBO max) some don't (Disney+, Plex)

if the app uses apple's media player, then it should work. If the app wrote their own player, then the developers will need to add code to make it work right.

Until the devs add code for the new wheel, the app thinks it's seeing position info from the old style regular touch surface, so it behaves exactly the same as if you finger was moving in a circle on the old remote.

when playback is paused, and you touch the wheel for a moment before you move, the current position indicator will change to a "donut with a dot on it." if you see that, it's going to work like you want it too. The dot will also match and follow your finger position on the wheel .

it does work exactly like the iPod click wheel, some people just haven't coded their apps for the new hardware yet. .

with the exception of the very first model that had a wheel that actually moved, the iPod click wheel was just a touch surface with buttons underneath. There were also a couple versions of "touch wheel" that had buttons outside of the touch surface.

But, the new remote is just that, a touch surface with buttons underneath, but the touch surface is split into 2 parts.

This was driving me nuts too, until I read that you first need to tap (not click) on the outer ring and leave the finger until you see a circle in the scrubbing bar, then you can start scrolling like the iPod 😉

… including Apple who hasn’t coded it for anything

AppleTV Menus:
- No click wheel scrolling.
- No clickwheel on-screen keyboard

Apple Music:
- No click wheel scrubbing

Apple Podcasts:
- No click wheel scrubbing
- No 15 sec skip

Apple Photos:
- No click wheel scrolling
- Removed fast trackpad edge swipe
(Gen 4/5 swipe edge to scroll years of photos. Gen 6 swipe swipe swipe give up…)

Apple Movies:
- Pause. Tap. Wait for circle icon. Scroll.

The idea of adding a click wheel to the remote is actually pretty good. With iPods scrolling through Menus, media, album art, photos, games etc was so intuitive and consistent. “It just worked”.

But this is no iPod Wheel and with today’s Apple then once a product is released then it tends to remain “as-is” until the next gen. (And as for 3rd party… they haven’t designed specific to AppleTV for years) 🙁

The clicking sound on the buttons drive me crazy. Makes it feel like a cheap, $5 remote. Can not believe Apple wound accept that.

Yep - sounds and feels very unrefined.
Surprising from Apple, especially since the first gen Siri remote buttons feel great and are basically silent (way better).

It drove me nuts at first too, so I just changed it over to simply act as a directional click pad. I may change it back and test out scrubbing again thanks to the helpful advice here. If I'm feeling plucky...

2 weeks later: The location of the play/pause button is awful for those still using previous gen AppleTV's.

We have 3 AppleTV's so I'm either muting the new one (or worse) activating Siri on the old ones. Human beings are capable of rewiring our brains for new remotes but this button swap almost feels malicious. "Annoy them enough and they'll upgrade their old new remote". o_O

They waited too long to do new remotes - at least in our household.

We got fully acclimated to the Siri Remote 1 and now enjoy quite a bit, especially in the silicone cases that make them wonderful to hold, use and toss down on the table/couch when done without fear of issue.

All that I miss from the new SR2 is the mute button.
I prefer basically everything else about the SR1

Dumb question, but what scenario do people use the mute button?

For me, if I am interrupted with a call or doorbell then I pause so I dont miss anything. And if I need to drop the volume then I just hold down the Volume button.

My sister-in-law just sent me a silicone case for the old remote. I never even thought of using it because it looks so tacky but after I tried it then I immediately appreciated the added comfort of a soft textured case that no longer slips into the couch cushions. (Note: My new remote also hasn’t gotten lost so the increased size for both has helped with that issue)

Almost all of our Apple TV usage is live streaming TV (YouTubeTV), mostly sports honestly --
During sports commercial breaks the mute is basically essential.

It just gets annoying doing the volume all the way down, then back up, each time....there can be a LOT of AD breaks for sports, and I refuse to listen to the endless stream of pizza, beer and pharmaceutical ADs on repeat.

yes, another useless feature which wastes another button.

The next one is the siri button on the remote. All devices listen for 'hey siri', why the hell is it on the appletv remote?

You can press the Siri button on the remote and say things like 'System' or 'Netflix' or 'Music' etc. etc. and it just goes there! TRY IT! 'Pause'....'Back'....'What did they say? (Service dependent). Play around with it and you will appreciate it.....no 'Hey Siri...' or 'Siri'...needed. 'Rewind 5 min.'...'Forward 5 min.'.....

Also for the remote it makes sense they use a button instead of always listening as that would kill the battery life of the remote.

Held my finger on the wheel and scrolled but couldn't get to work

1. HBO max - started scrolling a few minutes ahead then a few minutes back as I continuously scrolled in one direction. Did not stop when I stopped. Weirdest thing is I started another movie, then went back to the same movie. It was still scrolling up and down!

2. Netflix did work

3. Apple TV+ library movie - didn't work

For me the click sound means that it is a high quality remote.

Do you have other remotes that are similar?

I’ve personally never encountered any remote that makes this much noise.
I hate it

The last thing anyone should want in the viewing environment is audible “click click click” with volume adjustments, etc
