One of the biggest things I use the iphone for when overseas is the data. I'll stick to my 1.59 bb, jb and software unlock.

Not sure why this has to be a jailbroken app even... Join the made for iPod program, use the apple accessory protocol and audio in/out on the dock connector, and make a legit app store app...

I don’t think Apple would allow any of that to happen.

what a grand idea

so you're gonna jailbreak your phone, and yet instead of taking it one step further to unlock it, you're going to use this ugly attachment? that won't even let you use data? score...

and LOVE the end/send buttons on the bottom. instead of dropping calls people will be dropping phones.

if the main draw for you americans is to unlock your phones, just make some friends with some overseas folk, it's much easier :p

I see some use of this, even though my 4S is factory unlocked.

When roaming in Europe, I don't need to worry much about fees. However when going outside the EU, Getting a micro-sim can be troublesome on PAYG,

Or I just want to pay the subsidized price and still get an unlocked iphone. I want everything!

Their logo looks familiar. :) I wouldn't be surprised if they were sued over that.

I wonder if the camera hole is large enough given the issues with other cases and the fact that it is so recessed with the thickness of the case. Regardless, the case looks like crap. But an interesting idea.

Just how much do you have to pay to unlock your phone in the US??

Over here in the UK it's around £15 (USD 20-ish) from the carrier.

Even better!

Even better news, by the looks of it it has a removable battery (similar to a HTC Wildfire's) These are cheap as chips (fries) and will be cool.

My names on the waiting list!

... considering you could buy the locked one, sell it, buy an unlocked one, and probably save money.

Why not just buy the unlocked? Why go to the trouble of buying the locked and and sell it? Am I missing a piece of info?

Just curious.

yes they are.....but you need to license the ability to use the dock connector.... I'm guessing they just lost that........

I'm curious about that... You definitely need to apply for permission to use Apple's trademarks, including the "Made for iPhone" logo. They almost certainly will have lost that permission (if they ever had it to begin with) if they offer an accessory like requires mandatory jailbreaking in order to be useful.

But, if they were to avoid invoking any of Apple's trademarks in ways that fall outside of fair use, are there any further requirements? Are the electrical and physical specifications themselves protected by some form of intellectual property (likely taking the form of a patent), the use of which would require an application for permission?

If you bought it locked to AT&T, presently you cannot pay any amount to have it legally unlocked. They simply will not do it.

Apparently, from anecdotal evidence I've read, Verizon will unlock your iPhone 4S free of charge, provided your account meets certain eligibility requirements. However, after unlocking the Verizon phone, it is only guaranteed to accept non-native SIM cards while you're overseas. As soon as you get back in the USA, it will attempt to default back to Verizon's network, no matter what SIM card you insert.

Make this work with an iPod Touch and you have a winner.
SERIOUSLY.

I plan to get an iPod Touch most likely at the end of the year. I only voice call and text, don't need a 3G data connection nor do I want to pay for it on top of my voice plan. Simple phone functionality I can add on top of an iPod Touch would allow me to ditch carrying my current cheap dumbphone along with the Touch. It would essentially be the iPhone I want: Same voice/text plan I've had for over 8 years, no contract (while still being a full-fledged subscriber instead of Prepaid/PAYG customer), and all the normal App and iPod benefits the iPhone/iPod touch have.

thank the maker that unlocking phones over in australia is so much easier. still, that's a pretty cool idea, people with say, a work number and a personal number... no more 2 phones in your pocket!!
This thing is as fat as 2 phones.

But then wouldn't that make you the annoying person who walks around in public with your phone on speaker, yet still holding it somewhat near your face? Seeing as the Touch has no earpiece it would have to be with a headset of some sort. Doesn't seem overly convenient.

Unlocking an iPhone is typically more difficult than a simple jailbreak.

- If this is really the case, how does unlocking an iPhone work in the US?
In Denmark, at least with my carrier, it is far easier to unlock than to jailbreak: Go to the carrier website, log in, click "Unlock iPhone", put in new sim card, sync via iTunes, done.

Is this process really so convoluted in the US that it's easier to jailbreak, buy and install a clunky phone add-on and then just live without data on your new sim card?
