I'm sorry but I have to disagree with everyone suggesting a different monitor. I purchased a 3rd party monitor to do go with my Mac pro and I wound up selling it and using the $ to invest in an Apple Display. It's the best investment I ever made and here's why.

1. Color
2. Brightness
3. Vividness.
4. It matches (not the most important but hey.. it's true)

Now.. can you get the same color on the other monitors.. Sort of. I found that i had to fingle with my dell monitor for weeks to get the same colors that I saw on monitors at the Apple Store. I never got a great Gama/brightness setting.. it would literally hurt my eyes looking at the thing. I would have to invest an additional $150 to buy a calibrator to really get it right and wouldn't you know that was just about the price difference of getting an Apple Pro Display. I sold the Dell Display (tried the same thing on a Samsung Diplay too.. so I know it wasn't the monitor) and purchased and Apple 20 inch Refurbished display. Out of the box it looked Immaculate the first time I turned it on. You only have one button to worry about and that's the brightness. Color, hue, baland, Contrast.. everything else is perfect.

My case in point is.. it's not just that the Apple Monitors match.. it's so much more. The monitors as specifically calibrated to the Mac Pros and the video cards that ship on Apple's computers. I you want good colors/brightness/contrast on just ANY LCD, then you're also going to have to calibrate it out of the box. Trust me.. It's worth the extra dough.

Apple always insures that the color matching on their monitors is superb.

Nevertheless, the current LCD's from Apple are grossly overpriced. I waited it out for two years waiting for some movement or advance and it never came.

As I sit here typing this I am looking at my Cinema Display and my Dell side by side and the Dell is better.

I will say that the Cinema Display was much easier to calibrate, but even when factoring in the cost of Pro calibration and the extra time, it still did not add up to buy a Cinema Display.

Sorry but till Apple releases a HDCP 1080P compatible screen I will stick with my "CRAPPY" Dell that boasts:

Dell 2408WFP-
* 24-Inch WUXGA 1920 x 1200 Display – View approximately 30%1 more on-screen content compared to Dell 20-inch monitor.
* 6 Millisecond Response Time (typical) – Reduces ghosting and imaging associated with movement for fluid motion.
* 3000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio – Get dark blacks, sharp images, crisp text, brilliant color saturation and greater life-like detail.
* 110%2 Color Gamut (CIE 1976) - With Dell TrueColor Technology, you’ll see more color than average monitor of 72% color gamut.
* Full HD 1080p – Supports higher definition than HD television and a wide array of HD connection options like HDMI, Display Port, DVI-D with HDCP and HDMI 2.1 Audio Out.

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
Digital Visual Interface - Digital (DVI-D) with High Definition Content Protection (HDCP)
DisplayPort
Video Graphics Array (VGA)
Component Video
Separate Video (S-Video)
Composite Video
USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Hub with 1 USB upstream port and 4 USB downstream ports
9-in-2 media card reader

For basic Graphic design and video editing this screen will work fine!!!

Couple of points, if I may:

First, everything Apple is "overpriced", yet their market share grows every day. It's hard to establish a value proposition when comparing apples to oranges.

Second, I think Dell monitors are good, and it's undeniable that they come with more features. However, PCs are also good and come with more features than Macs. Why don't we all go back to using PCs? The answer to that question is the reason that some choose ACD over a Dell monitor.

I'd love a new cinema display. I currently have a 2407WFP-HC. There's nothing wrong with it, but I prefer the convenience of having a MagSafe built in and the better design.

I'd even use a DVI switch so I could use my PS3. The only problems I see are:

- Resolutions. Will it do 1:1 1080p? Will it stretch it to 16:10? No menus mean you can't choose.
- Price. Ouch. $1133 in the UK.
- Connections. There are no adapters for the mini displayport. It wouldn't fit the DVI-D I currently use.

So would any other. It only gets complicated when you use cable adapters and KVM switches. And those aren't that bad. :p

Display Port 1.1 has HDCP support.

If you think a Dell monitor is better quality than an ACD then you're either a casual or you need to step back from your crack pipe.

Some of the high-end Dell monitors use the same panels as the Apple Cinema Displays.

I've had Dell monitors and I just upgraded to a 30" ACD. I can't compare them side by side, because they were different sizes, but image quality-wise they're pretty much the same.

Honestly.. I don't know why so many people want or wish to have HDCP enabled on our Mac's. If you want to watch bleedin' movies buy a standalone Blu-Ray or a PS3 and a decent TV.

Personally, I don't wish to fork out for a stupid HDCP premium on my Mac equipment, just so some former pc retard ;) can watch movies on their Mac machine! :D

Opps was I been to mean?

Hmm.. I don't believe this is completely true since some Dell's share the same panels as the ACD. Though the TFT's
driver circuit is completely different, this in itself could make or break the display when compared.

Personally I like the ACD better!!

Besides the physical connection on the back or under the DELL's, the main difference between the Dell and ADC displays
is the SWOP certification. For Pre-press and inhouse print studio, the ADC's are supposed to colour-match out of the box.
Where as with the DELL, you need to create a colour profile.

OK.. I don't know is there a misunderstand here, or your all morons.
I'll assume the prior! :D

The New Apple Display is design for use with the new Shiny MacBooks and MacBookPro's only. It's not designed for the desktop market. Hence, the image...

p.s. If you folks watched the Keynote you would of been informed.

If you had paid attention while you were watching the Keynote you would've heard Steve Jobs say about the new Mini Display Port ..."We are building it into everything we make". :p

It will come to the desktops as soon as they are updated.

I don't think it will come to the Mac Pro. It makes no sense from a technical or financial perspective. Not that that would stop Apple, but I would be very suprised if mini DisplayPort is present on the Mac Pro's graphics cards, let alone the only video output connection.

IMO, Apple's new Cinema Displays are far from professional. There's just no way that a monitor like that- lacking basic connections- could be considered a professional-grade unit. If you're looking to get a really good, professional Apple display- the old generation ones are what you're looking for.

Don't get me wrong- the new displays are fantastic. Apple's done a fantastic job at putting LED backlighting in a desktop display- but for the price, it's just not worth it right now.

miniDisplayPort is doubtful, but that says nothing about using full-sized DisplayPort. ;) I bet that's what Steve meant.

agree with u now..the new 24" does not cater to the same market as their elder brothers

its seems a consumer-oriented one.

But its price which is at parity with the current 23" & the Title "Cinema Display" is pretty confusing.

does anyone know if they have fixed the compatibility issue and there is some sorta dongle or other way to run the 24 in led cinema display on a harpertown mac pro? i dont wanna buy a 30 in cinema display and then have a led display replace it... does anyone know how, or if this is even possible yet? thanks

But sadly it uses an inferior S-PVA panel. S-PVA cannot rival or match the H-IPS. :D

Also LED Backlighting is just gorgeous.

Not necessarily.

If you ever get the chance, take a look at Eizo Nanao's S-PVA offerings. Then you'll understand why they're so expensive. :p

I went with NEC, as Eizo's have gotten too expensive for me. :( Not unhappy I did though. The LCD2490WUXi is really good, and a major bargain to boot. :D

Not currently possible in any way.

To the rest of the people responding: November, anyone? This is DEAD! :D
