Video-only camera = FAIL.

Chances are, though, in the iPod Touch, because of better software customization, it will support pictures. Of course, it should be noted that the camera won't exactly be the best.
Even if it's not supported like that out the box, it could easily be enabled, by App Store Developers, Apple, or other Community Sources.

hopefully it wont just be video only. spells good news for me though, cause im def looking to score a iTouch soon

Wow, this topic is full of fail.

First, the new iPod nano has the exact same physical dimensions as the 4th gen - the camera has not added any extra bulk to the device (didn't Steve mention this in the keynote anyway?). The only recent cases of Apple making a 'new' device thicker then the previous generation was the iPhone 3G/3GS in comparison with the original iPhone, and the 2nd gen touch which was a mere 0.5mm thicker then the original.

Second, until the hardware for the 3GS camera is radically improved/redesigned, there is no way they'll put it in the touch or it'll make it so much thicker. Steve was interviewed after this year's iPod keynote and he said if they put in a still camera they'd want to include the autofocus features and whatnot (which is fair enough, in my opinion) - but this would make the iPods a lot fatter as a result.

Phones don't always have cameras too so my point I guess is if you're going to put one in, why hamper it software-wise to not let it take photos?

It's not software, it's hardware. The camera in the nano can only ever take video, Apple can't push out a software update to change this at all. I once again refer to Steve's interview following the latest keynote.

New Flip Video Cameras to Have Wi-Fi

Cisco’s popular Flip camcorder has helped sparked a revolution in digital and online video. By making video recording quick and easy to record and upload, millions of random moments have been captured (and then summarily uploaded to YouTube).

However, the Flip is getting some major challengers. Kodak’s Zi8 video camera boasts impressive features and 1080p HD quality (note: I own both a Flip and a Zi8), but perhaps the bigger threat to Cisco’s camera is Apple: the iPhone 3GS can directly upload to YouTube (YouTube) and even theiPod Nano now boasts a video camera.

Cisco’s fighting back with new features, though. The next-generation Flip MinoHD, due in the first half of 2010, includes double the memory, a larger screen, and direct Facebook uploads. Now according to Pocket Lint (and confirmed by Cisco), the Flip will, for the first time, include Wi-Fi.

The development doesn’t surprise us: this is an area where Cisco is proficient, and with the iPhone 3GS changing the face of video (YouTube uploads rose by 400% right after the iPhone 3GS after its release), the Flip had to evolve to match. You won’t be able to upload video from anywhere, but it does make it a lot easier.

There’s one more new feature that shouldn’t be overlooked: the new Flip will increase its screen real-estate by have a sliding screen that reveals the record and menu buttons. Sweet.

The iPod touch with camera will not and was never intended to have the iPod nano camera. Look at the leaked pictures, the lens in the touch is much bigger than the nano's (not referring to depth, (which can't be determined from the pictures we have) but circumference). Also...

iFixit iPod nano (5th generation) teardown said:
Space may have been a factor in not including a better camera. Excluding its mount, the camera in the iPhone 3G is about 6 mm thick. The 5th Gen nano is 6.2 mm thick at its thickest point.

Unlike the nano, the touch, at 8.5 mm thick, could conceivably support an iPhone-sized camera, although it would certainly be an engineering challenge.

There's no such thing as a camera that can only take video. (Think about what video essentially is: a fast slideshow of pictures) Apple chose not to enable still image capture because that quality would be poor. Most dumbphones have VGA cameras like the nano, and they all take pictures.

just get an iphone, im getting tired of itouch getting to many features, lucky you even got the touch screen on it.

What an ignorant statement. Sorry to sound so harsh, but it's true. You going to pay for my contract length, sport? Or how about paying the $500+ to buy it outright w/out a contract?

Those who don't want the iPod Touch to be near equal the iPhone (but without the phone capabilities) are just sore that they have to pony up aaaall the money to a monopoly carrier like A&T.

w.e. i'm happy with my touch. it holds my music and i can play games. The (still) camera would have been nice to mess around with some apps but video only is lame.

Also I believe that a video only camera is a stupid idea.

I find a need to take a picture more often then I find a need to have a video.

YUP!!! People are going to be let down again if they do the crappy video camera in the nano.

COME ON APPLE, standardize like you love to do and just give them all the iPhone camera with pics AND video!

It actually won't. The Autofocus camera found in the iPhone 3GS is quite a bit thicker than the space the iPod Touch 3G left for the camera.
The iPod Nano Camera fits in that space perfectly.

EDIT: I was beaten to it.

But who needs another crappy fix-focus-toy camera?

Jobs made it clear that if they were to allow still-camera functionality that they would also include the auto-focus feature from the iPhone 3GS. Yes, the camera may be capable of taking still pictures, but Apple isn't allowing users to take advantage of it because, ideally, they want to pack more hardware in to improve it first.

I can't wait until spring so I can hear these new claims about the iPod Touch with camera!

"MEH" says it all. Unless my Touch takes a dump, I'll be fine with simply continuing to use my 2nd gen. It won't last forever, but I'm sure I can skip this minor upgrade. Maybe the Touch model that comes out after the upcoming one, will make my heart beat a little faster, but I think the one mentioned would be more appealing to someone who doesn't yet own a Touch. Come to think of it, IS THERE ANYONE WHO DOESN'T YET HAVE A TOUCH???? :)

Somebody tell Jobs he needs to up his game.

Thats why I updated my 1st gen with a 64gb. The only thing that would get me to upgrade again, over the 64gb breaking, would be a better quality higher rez screen. Maybe something that is truly widescreen.

Someone is bound to write an App for the ipod touch allowing it to take pictures if a camera version is released.
