Ok, sorry for the clickbait title but I'm calling it IF if it is true that there is an se version coming.
Think about it, the 3 is a tired design now, the new iphones are having a new chassis so it would make sense to differentiate and bump the design of the 4/5 down to the se but remove a couple of things ecg/aod.

I don't think there's much they can do to the Watch design.
They could make it more boxy to fit in more with the new iPhones but do we really want a more boxy watch? I like the curves of the current gen.
All I'm hoping for this gen is for a little slimmer bezels.

I believe the removal of force touch may allow for some kind of redesign in the series 6. If the rumours of a less expensive version of the watch arriving are true a new look for the latest model would allow people to differentiate between the two, surely the difference won't only be software feature based.

The removal of ‘Force Touch’ wouldn’t propagate a redesign (And even if it did, a redesign of what exactly?), what it probably would allow for is an increased battery capacity, one of the same reasons why 3D Touch was also removed for that very reason on the iPhone.

Oh well I guess we will know for certain shortly.

A redesign will probably involve doing something different with the crown and side button, but it's true there really isn't too much that could be done to the existing form factor. People ask for a thinner watch but even removing 1mm and keeping all the present functionality would be a big ask.

I'd be interested in seeing a mockup of this. Gotta say I've always loved the boxy design of my Pebble Steel. Would love a similar look in an Apple Watch.

Rather than a new design, I believe Apple will try to make the watch thinner while keeping the current design. Maybe add a few new sensors.

The watch is pretty much perfect, but think it would benefit with:

1. Solar-powered battery charging (while still looking the same)
2. Thinner design
3. More sensors (oxygen for example)

The issue with a redesign would be breaking compatibility with watch bands and the UI. So changing the casing to be bigger/smaller, thinner/thicker, curvier/boxier, would require the band attachment points to be the same.

Changing the screen size, aspect ratio, or shape would break the UI.

I think the low end watch will be going to a Series 4 style design (same shape / screen / no always on) but with a more modern processor than the Series 4. I think they will name it something WITHOUT a number so it doesn't seem dated year over year. Like the last 2 years the "3" was the low end model and you started feeling like getting the 3 was a "bad" deal when there was a "5" etc. That's why the iPhone 8 this year was basically remade into the iPhone "SE".

So the low end watch will be mostly like the Series 4 but called something like the Apple Watch SE.

I’m thinking the SE is not only to bring the price down but countries like Australia haven’t even got the ECC featured let alone the blood oxygen sensors.

I think a flat sided watch design would look great. Basically like the iPad Pro has which the iPhone 12 will have. Possibly we will see it on the watch.

I don't think there's much they can do to the Watch design.

Under Jony Ive, that probably was true, but he’s no longer head of the ‘design team‘ for the Apple Watch. And rest assured, there will be changes coming to the Apple Watch in future year models, where I would not be surprised if Apple ventures away by offering a round variant in accordance with the square design.

I doubt very much the mainstream model of the Apple Watch won't remain square for many years to come... the shape itself has become iconic much like the white look of Apple's ear and airpods. The shape itself IS marketing that you have Apple Watch so the last thing they will do is make it look like the mass of competing watches. That said I believe they are on a 3 year cycle with the Apple Watch.

Year 1: Series 0 (wasn't named this but it was the first Apple Watch)
Year 2: Series 1 & 2 (released at the same time)
Year 3: Series 3 (the last of the original shape)
Year 4: Series 4 (FIRST MAJOR CASE REDESIGN)
Year 5: Series 5
Year 6: Series 6 (this year and likely the last year of this case design)
Year 7: Series 7 (likely a new SQUARE redesign of the case again in 2021)

I must have missed the major redesign with the 4

My prediction is that there will not be a change in Apple Watch style for the series 6 simply because there haven’t been any leaks of the case.

it seems like we only get case leaks if the design is changing.

So you must not follow the Apple Watch closely. Because, there’s very few times in the past we’ve had leaks of the casing, beside the CAD render of the first GEN watch. There really isn’t anything to ‘leak’ per se, When the Apple Watch isn’t really expected to have any major revisions on an annual basis, plus; Apple has one major supplier for the Apple Watch with ‘Quanta Comp‘, Which has very tight control restrictions without releasing classifieds .

before you scold him he is right... when Apple Watch Series 4 launched with the new case design there were leaks about the changed face design for almost 6 MONTHS both in descriptions and schematics and then there was a huge expose on 9to5Mac with full up leaked pictures of the new watch about 13 days before the event...

As the other poster pointed out, I’m correct. And I do follow the Apple Watch closely. I’m the founder of the Hermès discussion group and have owned every Apple Watch Hermès series.

nice try. Blocked!

My money is on Relentless Power and Canyonblue737. I doubt there will be a major change in the watch. I have a Series 1 that, apparently needs an upgrade. I don't think so but my hubby does. I continually complain about not getting exercise credit because I don't get my heart rate above 130 for long enough so it only gives me movement credit. I don't think a new watch will fix the software of it all.
