Disappointing. It would have been better if they had upgraded it to DDR memory, but I guess they need something to differentiate the iMac from the eMac.
It is nice to see a $799 model again, and it is actually a pretty good value considering the monitor is built in to the machine.

Makes the 15" iMac G4 a really crummy deal, though. I think Apple is trying to differentiate the models as much as possible, but that's hard when Moto is still pumping out crappy chips.

It should also be noted that, as speculated, the CRT iMacs have been officially EOL'd with this announement. The classic iMacs have now been removed from the education site as well.

As an owner of a 17" "Spring" imac, I'm not entirely bothered by this update. The adjustable monitor alone is enough for me to feel confident with the imac vs the emac.

Also, the bus system in the imac is 133mhz. what about the emac? still at 100mhz?

It's definitely a nice update for those that want to get in on the mac side for cheap.

Just went to the website and they at the top of the stores page the starting price is $799 but further down the page it is $999

Guess they haven't updated it yet

I snapped a screen cap of it and it's posted here:

Yeah, and if you click on it to buy one the description at the top of the page still says "700 or 800MHz PowerPC G4 Processor."

You'd think they roll it all out at the same time..

Bus system is 133!!! They look sweet. I wonder what it would take to replace the vidio card? Hmmm. What a great deal.
I wish my mom didn't buy that gateway! She'd be gettin an e-MAC! Doh!

No cards or sockets... the PowerMac is the upgradeable machine... everything else is pretty much soldered to the logic boards.

waaaait a minute. When the power macs came out with DDR ram every one said it wasn't a true implementation of DDR anyway. This gave me the impression DDR just cost more but had very little speed advantage.

Could someone inform me, would the emac be better with DDR like MacPhisto says?

Why is everyone so negative about this update? Why do you all expect the eMac to have the same specs as a PowerMac for $999? I am saving up and buying the $999 1Ghz combo drive model, call me dumb, but I think it is a good deal, and I think it might be a little snappier running Jag then my old iMac DV.

If they had done the switch to DDR, they would most likely have done the same architecture switch as the DDR PowerBooks -- from PowerMac chipset to the DDR iMac chipset -- which would have killed the OS 9 booting.

Looks like OS 9 booting may still be quite important to the education crowd...

Apple just moved the Airport to the PCI bus (yes it has one if it's still using the old PowerMac chipset) and added Bluetooth to the USB.

But we'll see exactly what happened when the tech docs get updated.

S-Video and Composite TV-out added!

That rumor surprised me, but it's one more nice addition! Games and DVDs on TV!

A very nice entry level.

I wish you could add just a CD-RW to the bottom model for a few bucks more--since that part can't be upgraded later, while RAM can.

The middle model's a great buy, though, for another $200. Boost the RAM to 640 MB yourself for under $80.

If you're thining of buying, I think you'll be very happy. Mine is a year old and it's a great system. PC friends are amazed--"I like your monitor!! Where's the computer?"

Did anyone else notice this...the 800Mhz machine is listed as having a 133Mhz system bus like the 1Ghz has...doesn't the iMac 15" only have a 100Mhz bus? This really makes the iMac look like a ripoff, of course the extra 33Mhz of bus speed might not do much performance wise. But still it is there at a great price.

I asked this in the other story in the forums, what kind of discount do you get with this in the Education Store?

Might be an excelent price for those teachers and students out there.

I posted some education pricing in the hardware forum.

Some pretty steep education discount, at least compared to the iMac.

Come on now!

128MB of RAM?

*sigh*

256MB should be the minimum. Most eMac buyers are not going to be adding stuff to them *cough* schools *cough*

That's true, I didn't realize that the 15" iMac is only a 100 bus. Here's something interesting - if you go to the hardware page on apple.com, at the top, it says 'new 17" iMac.' If you go to the iMac page all you see is the 17." Fuel to the fire that the 15" is being phased out? Maybe Apple doesn't want to bother trying to differentiate that model from the eMac, and will focus on the 17," with DDR and the bigger screen.

New keyboard and mouse? Yes?

I hope I'm not the only one who sees this:

eMac's Tech Specs say it has "Apple Keyboard and Apple Mouse."

At least iMac's and Power Mac's Tech Specs clearly state "Apple Pro Keyboard and Apple Pro Mouse."

Apple has been very strict with its trademark and product names. Even though the few eMac pics on the site show the old Pro Keyboard.

Now it really looks like a simplified version of the old keyboard to me. ;)

Wonder how easy this one will be to take apart an clean...

from the eMac tech specs page:
"Startup in Mac OS 9 is available only with CD-ROM and Combo drive configurations. All configurations can run Mac OS 9 applications in Mac OS X Classic mode."

Why is this? There doesn't seem to be anything different in the SuperDrive model that makes its mobo different from the other 2 models. No FW 800 and they all have AE.

edit - yay, my 100th post!
also, where is that pic of the new keyboard? I don't see it anywhere on the eMac page.

I had a similar response when I got my first iMac. The lass behind the counter said, "Your monitor is here." I was a little irked that she didn't recognize what an iMac was since it was one of the best, if not THE best selling computer at the time.

But even sillier is when I pulled out my 15" LCD monitor (just a monitor, not an LCD iMac), and some people were amazed and thought that was the entire computer. Now, that would have been pretty impressive, but no.

RAM isn't that expensive...unless you get it from Apple. I tend to go to ramseeker.com and get some great deals on RAM.

Nice to see the update, and the replacement for the iMac, but this didn't result in anything truly spectacular.
