o so this is what i calculated

my display is (MBP) 1440 x 900 15.4 in
.2303 Dot Pitch (DP)
110 Pixels per inch (PPI)

my old display is 1280 x 1024 16 in
.2479 DP
102.45 PPI

my new one is 1440 x 900 19 in
.28 DP
89 PPI

in other words im returned it, and im glad i did. it was poop.
going to try and apply to work at best buy (if you work there you pay what the store payed and 10% of that, so monitors are a lot cheaper) and the apple store for the 5th time so i can get a better display with a discount.

You have to use the horizontal screen width, not the diagonal screen length that monitors are quoted as having. Just take the published screen size as the hypotenuse and do a trig function on it using the 90 degree corner angle to determine the base length.

so im doing this wrong?
i must have because on the apple site there 20 and 23 is .258 and there 30 is .25

in that one website calculator i got .23 or the mbp.

ooo and just tried to work it out, i am not that far enough in trig to figure out the sides if i do not have at least 1 angle + 90, we only just covered radian measurement

Ahh, but you're not using all the available information. You already know the dimensions of 2 sides. One side is 1024 pixels and the other side is 768 pixels (or whatever the resolution of the screen is). Use those lengths to figure out your angles. The angles will be the same whether you're measuring in pixels or inches. Once you know all the angles then just use 15.4 inches as your hyp to determine the width.
