There's no point in waiting for this revision. The next one should be more interesting, as we'll at least finally get native USB 3.0 support.
right on! That is what I am waiting as well. Will wait to buy another FW800 external HDD for backup and buy a usb3 in same time with the model that comes with usb3

"your killing me smalls (apple)"
Any time you feel a mac pro update is important please do so...(like now)

What is the general consensus then in terms of when the updated Pros will become available? I'm in the same boat as a few others in terms of wanting to get a new MacBook Pro. Will be a new Apple owner, so how has this typically worked in the past in terms of availability? Is there an announcement then the Apple stores get stock in the same week? Or is there usually a lag in between? Ta.
Silent updates are usually offered the same day the page is update. Shipping varies of course and what other variables fall into that e.g., customization or location.

I sadly do not have the link to the Apple Store is down e-mail subscription for notification. I believe there is a Twitter feed for them.

I know!

For once in my life, I actually have some money put aside that I could use for a Mac Pro upgrade. (Last time I bought one, I had to take out a loan for it -- but to this day, it's still served me well as my primary computer.)

I have the early 2010 Macbook Pro 17" and just bought one of those Henge Dock docking stations for it last weekend. Great machine and I really can't see myself doing anything requiring the thunderbolt ports on newer models any time soon. Good to see this update coming down the pike, but it won't be enough to make me upgrade the MB Pro yet.

How about some Mac Pro love.

Intel need to get into gear.

I hope the 13" MBP finally gets the higher resolution from the 13" MBA.

Otherwise I guess I'll have to look seriously at the 15", not that I want a laptop that large.

I made up my mind that an Air would not suit my needs and I was only leaning towards the 15 MacBook pro because of the resolution and graphics. Maybe I don't do enough gaming for it to matter but I just need a better screen on the 13. It is a good size for a portable but only the screen stuff bothers me. There is no way I can afford a 15 so I would hope this update did update the screen and I'd be a happy camper. I need a new laptop soon so this is a good time for me.

For small upgrades, they're usually immediately available, and it sounds like that should be the case this time, as "shipments are arriving". I'm interested in when they'll be in stock at Amazon so I can save £100 or so.

Should I just wait?

Okay, here is the deal. I got a super old Powerbook, 12 inches. It was great until now. Very very slow. I see that beach ball far more often than I want. I don't use it daily due to these reasons. I need something portable (I will prolly get 15-inches only because I want matte screen).

However, I do need the intel stuff already. But, if I get the new sandybridge, i like to know what hte ETA is for ivy-bridge and the new redesign. Assuming ivy will have the redesign, is it worth waiting for? I guess if the new design comes out early 2012, i consider waiting, but i am already waiting for june for new iphone 5 (got 4 right now), i dont want to wait until summer for new laptop.

any suggestions?

I'm running the mid-2010 mbp as per sig, but as much as I'd like an upgrade this one won't be the one

My 17" Mid-2009 MBP is now worthless (35 US$ according to the Apple recycling program-original value > 2700 US$). It is 100 % OK, except the discrete GPU (NVIDIA 9600M), which has the same problems as the previous generation of NVIDIA GPUs. And no, Apple does not repair Mid-2009 MBPs free of charge, because NVIDIA says their 9600M GPUs have no problem. Millions of Laptop/Notebook users (not only Apple) worldwide can tell you a different story.

Yikes. I remember wondering a year ago (years?) if the 9600M was gonna have the same type of weak silicon failures as the 8600M... guess so :/

It's not *worthless* though. As it can still run on Integrated Graphics, you can still sell it on eBay for a few hundred; not everyone cares for discrete graphics. I'd bet you could get over $1,000 for it.

I personally would tell everyone to wait until 2012 when the new Intel chips are released to purchase a laptop.

I wish mate. Problem is, I need one now for work. Well, now as in 'I can wait max another week or two'! So, hoping for the refresh ones to come along before then. Looking for a performance improvement on the 13" Pro. Of course, it is pretty amazing as it is.

I want a new one, but really don't need it so I am going to try my hardest to wait until the big 2012 update....or possibly I will buy one now then sell in in 6 months or so when the 2012s come out....

meh

Finally! Let's hope it's something more substantial than a spec bump.

I think you're SOL. Last years' was just a speed bump, and in the spirit of the recent iPod touch "refresh" I don't think we'll see the new Ivy Bridge, redesigned Macbook Pro-Air until after the holidays. Maybe same time as iPad 3?

Does it really make sense to wait for the total refresh if I want a 15" maxed out MBP? Does not seem that the global refresh would bring a lot of changes if you take graphics out of equasion

16 GB of RAM?

Is it possible that an update like this would include a increase in RAM limitations? What determines how much RAM a laptop can handle. When you build out the Alienware laptops they have the option for 16GB/ I would love this to be capable of that.

Most of the new (upgradable) Macs can run with 16GB of ram. Especially the MacBook Pros.

If they bump up the graphics card to at least a GTX 570 or a 6950, I'm coppin first day.

Do the Alienwares outfit with 4x4GB or 2x8GB? The MBP has 2 RAM slots, and can support 16GB with 2 8GB sticks, albeit at $400+.

4 RAM slots would be nice for the MBP, I think some Thinkpads offer 4 RAM slots. 16GB of RAM would be under $100 assuming you install them yourself. I have 8GB of RAM right now, which gives me 4GB per virtual machine, IMO, a necessity, and is enough for me when on the OSX side alone. I average about 5-6GB of RAM usage usually. But I'm sure many users could appreciate 16GB of RAM when running extremely tasking apps.

The 13" needs to match the Vaio S in weight and resolution, but be quad core.

It would also need Blu Ray, of course.

It does boot, but the display is completely dead (ok, backlight works). So i cannot sell it on eBay or somewhere else. And no, all methods like NVRAM & SMC reset do not help.

Oh no it doesn't. No one wants a grainy screen with tiny fonts too small to read. Sony sets them at 125% zoom by default, making the font look even worse and windows don't resize to the screen properly.

Blue Ray? Thankfully won't happen.
