All of this does not matter as the new remote really sucks. Its too sensitive and does not register swiping well. I have tried to adjust, nothing helps. Another Apple failure, at least until they get voice working as well as it does not the phone.

Side note; Does anyone know how to access movie chapters? I've googled this and can't seem to find helpful answers.

ok,, its still good. Apple stuffed up here maybe

Dictation matured first, which is why its still part of the iOS and in tVOS Beta, along-side Siri which can do less local and more focused to in-the-cloud- stuff..

Seems more like Apple is using Dictation as a form of midddle-man... while Siri is being improved.. it keeps uses happy still.

After that they'd just kill of dictation, since siri can will do all that eventually.

I think these are great additions and I hope Apple keeps them coming. The ATV4 is strong enough hardware-wise to enable a lot of software features. Basically the Apple TV 4 is becoming a stronger development platform.

Hmm...this makes me think about how there was that hubub about Apple not supporting the Remote App for iPhone. Had dictation been in place from the get go, I wonder if Apple would have stood firm on not releasing Remote App support (instead pushing you to use dictation to enter text everywhere). This goes in line with people's suspicions that the AppleTV software launched too fast missing features Apple really wanted in there from the beginning.

Let me know when Siri can search my local iTunes library, and they organize the TV shows in my library by Show, season, episode instead of the awful way it is today.

Everyone finds that iTunes is impossible to use, even Siri.

The release notes say that single character password siri dictation is handled locally. Word based siri searches are sent to Apple for processing.

Yup. They need to make their marketing text clearer on this rather privacy-relevant point.

Spoken text dictation (words and phrases) is sent to Apple for processing.
[..]
Spelling dictation (individual letter and number entry) voice input is processed locally on the Apple TV, and this voice input is never sent to Apple. This is primarily intended for username and password entry, and is used for UITextFields with secureTextEntry enabled [..]

So, there's a local engine for "individual letter and number entry", including passwords, e-mail addresses, and URLs. For "words and phrases", it uses Apple's online service.

Sadly, having tried it, the local letter dictation gets about every other letter here. So for a 5 letter word, it dictated 3 letters (leaving 2 of the letters internal to the word missing.) After deleting all but the first letter, I fell back to the remote for letter entry...

I tried it for setting up Netflix, so in theory it works in non-Apple apps. But it wasn't good enough for me to try more than twice.

No. Siri only searches the device its on and the web. You can't use Siri on one device to search content on another on your local network.

Only because they haven't written it to. There's absolutely nothing technical stopping Apple from allowing Siri to search the index of a Home Shared library, which is already acting like a server (and talking to the ATV I might add), on your local network. A few lines of code added to iTunes and tvOS, and voila!

Besides possibly taking a little time to do right, the decision to not implement such functionality is, in my opinion, purely policy/political/financial. The only thing Apple gains from taking the time to implement this functionality is, oh, I don't know... customer satisfaction. Whereas if they did, they'd be making it easier for people to access content from other places than Apple's own storefronts and DRM, a kowtow to the MPAA/RIAA and labels/studios, I'm almost sure.

I wish they would sort out the music app, it's truly awful .

Also, has anyone else noticed that the with the physical remote you navigate menus by doing the following

swipe up=go up,
swipe down=do down
swipe left = go left
swipe right = go right

Except when you look at an app screen shot for example, you then have to swipe left (similar to an iPad interface where you drag the photo to the left ) in order to go right to the next photo.

Yet, if you use the remote app on an iPad, the swiping for menu nav is the same as physical remote but viewing photos/screenshots is the opposite! You have to swipe right to go right on the photos/screenshots. or another words, swiping right makes the photo go left .

How did this ever get released!

Does dictation work in any app's text input?

E.g. Do YouTube/Netflix automatically have dictation enabled in their search bar by this update too?
That is a damn good question. There is a patent out there for speech-to-text-field entry that Apple probably licensed in time for this release but not the initial launch of tvOS.

My take, the Music app is a classic "too many cooks" problem. I'm sure all the Beats / SoCal types had to have their opinion in the look and feel of it where some sort of middle ground was met to create this conundrum of a UI.

Still want the universal search to extend all over the place but I like this. It's a good step.
In time. I'm sure there will be some sort of keyword resource for speech recognition for third party app access with Siri in time once all the security and usability issues are sorted out.

I suggest you get your remote replaced. The feel of the swiping and navigation of my remote is fine. You can adjust the Remote Surface tracking in the Settings app if it is not the right sensitivity for you hand.

Let's hope they fix the inability to control SAMSUNG sound bars via the apple tv.

Total broken experience.

You can teach the remote to control any audio device. RTFM.

Working great with my Samsung sound bar in the living room and my B&W Zeppelin in the bedroom.

Best apple device I've bought for a long time, and only getting better with each update.

I intentionally did not get a fancy smart flat-screen for Apple TV. I have a simple 42" display with regular IR remotes. Programmed the sound controls into the remote the week everything came together.

siri is a cloud based program. You are asking it to navigate local networks. All local networks aren't the same. People don't all name their files the same. Shoot homeSharing doesn't even work properly all the time because of networking issues.

Plus, and this is the major point: people who store files locally and/or rip and tag their content is a very tiny percentage of the market. To be point blank... Why would Apple put resources into something caters to such a small market? And BTW I also rip/tag

After all these years of anticipation and buildup, this is the latest Apple TV? You don't even bother to add dictation support or Siri search until after the fact, let alone offer any significant features or channels that differentiate you from equivalent or cheaper alternatives? Really Apple? REALLY?

"Really" -Apple

iTunes visualizer would be nice. The music app and computer app play music the same boring way. Small artwork on that hideous white background. Please allow us to change it to something darker!

Not sure what you mean by "these days", but that's normal pretty much anywhere for anything new. The original OS X barely functioned at all. The original iPhone OS didn't even support copy and paste. That seems like a "basic feature that should be there from the start".
Yes, exactly! Add to the fact that there is such a push in Silicon Valley to "get it done now, get it right later." Apple probably rushed to get this product in stores in time for the holiday season.

Yes, this is extremely confusing! The swiping for photos is also inverted compared to how you swipe on an iPhone or iPad for photos.

FINALLY!!!

Bluetooth keyboard support!!!

YEAH! GREAT news......if it only would work!!

It will get closer when the update includes 4K support instead of fuzz 1080. Apple beta product like the watch.

Then you can wait for a very long time! :)
A: Do NOT expect anything NEW when it comes out from apple! How long did it take to get 1080 from apple?
B: Can an update put (hardware) HDMI 2.0 in the apple tv? :) Because thats what you need to get 4K on your screen. Maybe in 5 years, when we all have 8K already :)
