hi mike,
nice job with this, i've used NC since it was first released (1983? yeah, i am old)

classic mode is about as close of an NC clone as i've seen on OSX, even better than MC or the java-based monstrosities.

you planning on putting this in the app store? windows refugees would probably find it useful
Hi adww12321,

Thanks for your response.
Files will get to Mac App Store when it'll be free of Alpha/Beta mark, I can't specify any time period now.

CRAX vs filesmanager

We've just released the new version of Files. Now it has additional skin with the native Mac feel, along with the old classic one. Active skin can be changed in Preferences. Also, the Mac OS X Lion is now supported.
Download the new version at filesmanager.info.
We would be glad to hear any feedback and suggestions.

Mike.

I've tried CRAX - a new file management software for Mac. Comparing CRAX to the FileManager the second has much less functionality.

Thanks for the application, kinda Far Manager, isn't it? :)
Hope it will receive Far Manager-like editor soon, that's the thing I'm missing on Mac OS very much.

And, I doubt that it will be ever allowed at App Store due to Sandboxing.

Filemanager

Hi,
I've read this thread with interest.
The best filemanager I ever saw is TotalCommander by Christian Ghisler (Switzerland).
Unfortunately it is devoted to MSWindows and written in DELPHI.
MuCommander is a brave operation, written in JAVA (omni-OS), but already frozen since 18 months.
It lacks a good search and intensive compare.

I'm planning to import TotalCommander by Wine or WineBottler; another option
is that CrossOver offers TotalCommander emulated.

All of the above lack the awareness of the OSX filesystem: ownerships, file mode and groups.
I do hope that Files will succeed in implementing what's missing in MC and the emulated TC.
Good Luck.
;JOOP!

Files Feedback

Hi,

I like where Files is going. There was one minor thing I noticed right away that would be a nice addition, unless there's a good reason why it's not implemented - being able to move the active folder or file to another position by typing its name, as in Finder (typing multiple characters in quick succession results in finding a match of all the characters, which is also nice). I find that I use that often and it's the first thing I missed when I started looking at Files.

It's looking good, though!

Thanks,
Bryan

wow Migun, this tool rocks. I had been looking for a Norton Commander clone for ages ! Better yet, I have it for OSX. And even better, you remembered the good old shortcut that are F8, F6, F5, F7... this is awesome.

Even better it's a freeware. Thanks a lot, really !

This feature is implemented in Files, you just need to hold Alt while typing the name.

Hello everybody,

Thanks for responses, happy to announce that a new version 0.5.2 of Files Manager is available.
The main focus in this release is on new navigation by typing (requested by many users). It can be "soft" (like in previous versions) or hard (filtering whole directory contents). You can also set options for letters searching (beginning of file name, everywhere etc) and different key modifiers (or choose typing without them at all).

Hi Mike,

I've never used a file manager before and I have to ask what someone would use an app like this for?

I understand that you can see hidden files and that but I'm not too sure of the point of it. Don't take this the wrong way - just curious.

It depends on what you need to do with your files. For simplicity, and in order to give you the prehistoric office desktop and file folder experience from 1984, the Mac Finder obscures a lot of what's going on with your files. That's great, until you need that detail. An example might be when you have to poke around with permissions, or tags (in extended attributes, xattr). Then something that gets under the hood can be super helpful, and way faster than using Finder.
