Because it's probably flopping at the box office. As like basically everything else related to Apple TV.
Ok...

"To date, Apple Original films, documentaries, and series have earned 499 wins and 2,262 award nominations and counting, including multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy Ted Lasso and historic Oscar Best Picture winner CODA." [1]

You may not like what Apple is releasing, but it's hard to say it's all flopping.

I don't think it's an odd strategy. These days, movies make the vast majority of their money on the opening weekend, so unless it's a super blockbuster that has some staying power in the theater, why leave it out here while it goes stale? Better to get it on your streaming service while it's still fresh and maybe drive some subscription growth.

I'm surprised it's not SOP for the big streaming services.

I think you've got it a bit backwards there. Blockbusters make a higher percentage of their money on opening weekend than these smaller films. Additionally, this film never had a real "opening weekend" to cash in on that first weekend. The limited release meant it never hit the majority of theaters at all, and those that it did only gave a few showings compared to a wide release.

Really long article, but it was missing one key thing that everybody would be looking for: a very brief summary of the plot!
You know who it stars and this... "Wolfs" follows two professional fixers played by Pitt and Clooney who must work together to cover up a high-profile crime." Do you really need to know more?

There's a YouTube video of the trailer embedded in the article. Take two minutes and watch it if you're interested. If your time is so valuable that you can't spare two minutes, then how are you spending time on MacRumors, commenting on articles about movies?

That's really nice. Also it seems like other than the academy, noone is watching them.
Which is why it was reported that they are loosing massive money with this and they will be cutting back. Thenagain, Apple can afford to loose money, but it doesn't change the fact that they are unable to create a movie or show which enters the public consciousness.
Netflix has more views in a day than Apple in a month, and I think even this sounds too generous. And that is with Apple constantly offering 3-6months free service in contrast with Netflix who doesn't even offer any free trials.

Summary:
Hired to cover up a high-profile crime, a fixer soon finds his night spiralling out of control when he's forced to work with an unexpected counterpart.

Poor ratings.

Is there a joke in the title? Or do Americans say "wolfs" rather than wolves"? The joke being that these guys see themselves as wolves but are too doofus to know the right word. OK, I see that my keyboard dictionary does have “wolfs” in it, but surely not. It’s so jarring.

After renewing my subscription after a long break, a think mdatwood does have a bit of a point. aTV+ started with a lot of promise, even if the cupboard was quite bare.
I renewed as I wanted to watch the final season of Ted Lasso, a show I loved, and a few other shows.
but the third series of Lasso was a lame soap in comparison with the first two seasons, masters of the air was a dark CGI snorefest tbh, and I am really struggling with For all Mankind which similarly suffers from poor writing. and the morning show should have been given the green dream quite some time ago.

I do not worry about what kind of awards a studio has managed to buy for itself with the Hollywood set. I’m interested in if a show has a captivating story, is fast paced and I come to care for the characters. And if there is CGI, it is well done so it doesn’t distract from the story.

But ATV+ is suffering a kind of ennui. very California. it’s like the writers have a list of bullet points they have to cover in every story, and that coverage is more important than the story itself.

PS: CODA was bought by Apple, not made in house, and is a close, translocated copy of a superior French film La Famille Bélier which has a lot more heart. CODA is not a good example of ATV+ originality and production quality at all. But does say a lot about modern Hollywood and the awards process.

Hollywood’s thanks to Apple for spending billions in their little world and employing thousands.
It’s a heartwarming, symbiotic, quid pro quo.

Genuinely can say I dislike both these dudes a LOT for various reasons I won’t delve into.

With that said, shout out to Angelina Jolie haha.

I can't fathom why you'd dislike Clooney. He seems like a super level-headed well-rounded guy. Pitt has shown some questionable traits, but what has Clooney shown?

I'm looking forward to watching this. 😃

Don't fret, it must just be a reference to the film. Americans say "wolves."

Pretty obvious to me just from the “trailer” linked.

At the end of the trailer it says wolf, and then an S is slowly drawn.

In the trailer itself they are each set up to be one of a kind, “lone wolf” types. Who then have to work together. A large chunk of the trailer is devoted to them saying “we are not partners”.

So it seems to be a depiction of two lone wolves working together.

Wolfs is a solid 7/10.

It isn't quite there in plot dynamics and character development was limited, so I can see why it was pulled from wider cinema release, even as a vehicle for its two lead talents.

Though it wouldn't surprise me if a follow-up film does come, per rumours suggest, as it's a good watch and will go down well with audiences enough to merit doing one.

Apple spends way too much on A-list actors, which won’t add up on their ROI.
As long as Apple keeps selling iPhones, iPads, Macs and ATV, why would they stop? More content helps them keep their customers. They are not an entertainment company.

You got it wrong. But if you watch the movie, you'll get the joke.

Agreed. It was fun. Clooney and Pitt work together well on screen, their chemistry evolves as the story is told, the plot and dialogue are clever. It's a good streaming movie. But I see why they pulled it from theaters - it doesn't seem to have what it takes to get people into theaters in a post-pandemic world (generally, pre-existing IP that audiences are already familiar with).

I really don't understand the reflexive hate from people who haven't seen it, but that says a lot more about them than it does the movie.

A lazy Pitt/Clooney co-produced, phoned-in buddy movie. Quite predictable for these 60+ actors. Zero effort.

It is a one hour and 47 minutes long ad for cortisol deficiency.

A sequel is in the works. A "vehicle" for Pitt and Clooney? More like a "rollator". Christ, what a waste of money.

I can fully understand why the theatrical release of this film was pulled. One word: underwhelming

Tired, wooden mannerisms. These old actors are way past their expiration date.
A voice of sanity.

I appreciate criticism based on lack of substance, but it seems you mix in their age with the criticism.

Why? Are people over a certain age always bad at things? It sounds a bit like that from your wording, but maybe I’m wrong. :). Just think it’s sad with the ageism. I bet that means you will also ”expire” when reaching a certain age? Isn’t it better to look at the individual performance instead?

Apple: puts a bunch of very expensive A-List actors in a movie

Apple: doesn't release it in theaters

Amazon has controversially pulled the same trick with some of their films. Promising a theatrical release to get talent to sign on and then reneging to making it streaming-exclusive, because they can save money and avoid paying “backend” royalties to talent which are based on box office receipts.

Director Doug Liman has been very vocal/angry about it.
