If that's not real, it's a nice iMac concept. It also correlates to the following submission by Aj:

Aj writes "I was told by a techie that Apple will be doing a change with the iMac screen, but it won't be LCD. It will be some form of flat screen (like the recent EOL DiamonTrons) or the like. Still being CRT they are not as costly, but better quality. I was also told the Graphics cards will be replaced with better gaming cards (16mb) to attract more attention to the iMac. If the screens are bigger.. dont know. But a DVD - CD-RW combo drive is close to guarenteed in the Upper models of the new iMacs.

replaced the link with a local mirror. (we'll see how long it lasts :) The geocities link works - it just is inconsistent...

From a blank browser window paste the url. That is how I always have to do a link to geocities.

It's fake

It looks an awful lot like a sawed-off snow imac to me...

very possible...

Nice!

I geuss everyone was right. Half of the rumors said it would be a CRT and the others said there would be an LCD. I geuss that Diamon Tron is a good hybrid. New 16 MB cards are something Macs need. (It'd be nice if they were put on the updated G4's shown Tuesday.) CD-RW/DVD's are great too!

Only a little over 24 hours left.

Compared to Apple's photos

My first thought was that it's been photoshopped, and the "hinged arm" in back was a rip off from a flat panel image on the Apple site. However, there is no photo on the apple site of any flat panel at this angle. Eitherway, it's a good idea. I think it'd help refresh the iMac line for the time being....

Interesting also is the naming convention used for the original image... with the date...

Anyone have a pic of a snow iMac to compare?

Uhhh... If it's real, it's LCD - I don't think they can fit a CRT into an enclosure quite that shallow.

Easy to tip over?

The iMac in the image looks like it could tip without too much effort. Does it look too bulky for the legs that are supporting it?

it does match up - but then again, so does every other iMac... (in that Apple does create photos in the same profile).

The thing that makes it most unlikely is that the screen has a similar curvature... in that, an LCD would be flat, as would some of the newer "flat screen" techs. As somone above said - it's be tought to fit a CRT into that casing.

Tube is toooo shallow to be real.

CRT's have gotten better, but I'd be real surprised if they have managed to make one 3" deep. Plus, that one is most definately not flat. Also, where would the mobo go? Flat up against the back?

Curvature

Yeah, the curve makes an LCD unlikely. If it's fake, couldn't the leg have been ripped from a 360 of a display? Also something strange to note. Any pictures of the snow taken by apple have the front leg down. This mac is sitting on it's front rubber pegs. If real, and it uses the hybrid type spoken of earlier, it would be thinner but still have more depth to it. The depth of the one in the picture is barely (if at all) enough for a slot loading DVD,CDR-RW, or combo drive. This would me the mainboard would have to be verticle and would be hard to engineer around the drives.

Everyone is right

The low end iMac will be CRT for pure cost reasons. If you want "cheap" you get CRT, tough.

The mid and high end iMac will be LCD of some small-ish size (and be priced accordingly).

CRTs are dirt cheap, but LCDs for use in non-portables are not prohibitively expensive in that price range.

Desktop LCDs have fewer restrictions that laptop LCDs dont have such as power source and size/shape for the "guts" to be fit into.

Frankly the iMacs are not much of a computer, they have no slots or drive bays so there is no need for all the extra electronics, sockets, board space. Much of Apple's chipset has been reduced lately to very few components with a CPU on a daughter card. Thats about all there is to em anymore.

If you saw the prices of components that Apple buys you'd scream bloody murder for deep price cuts. Apple has the highest margins in the Personal Computer market.

Just wait and see. Its only a few days away now. Of course everyone will be bitching and moaning about all aspects of the upgrades (or lack thereof) no matter WHAT Apple does.

some guy is a dork

apple won't make both a crt imac and an lcd imac. if they would do something like that it would be a new line of computer. i agree that diamontron screens would be nice. because i know that imacs won't go lcd.

To see the other concept renderings at that site drop the jpg name and just go to the directory. The only thing I found that looked real was the sticker scans.

My vote is the image is a fake or some ones wet dream. As already mentioned the curvature in the display tells us that image is a CRT. Also as mentioned picture tubes have a forward center of gravity that would make that thing likely tip forward too easy. And lastly, has anyone ever seen a picture tube with that short a depth!

There's no way this is real. Like a few people have said, this would not be a sturdy desktop computer. I would think having the machine fall on its face every few days would probably be a bad thing.

No way =)

It seem like a fat butter block!

Too large on the top, with pig like feet.

A Photoshopped image.

BS.

Thinking to yourself, "boy, that sure looks like a sawed-off iMac with a Apple display support foot on the back."

You'd be right. That's so very clear an AppleWorks job it cracks me up.

We just won't know until the 18th.

what?

are you lot seriously considering this thing to be the next generation iMac? it’s the ugliest thing i have ever seen in my life. i have full trust of Jobs eye for design, and i am sure that if that was put in front of him he would either laugh or cry...

take a look at all the other apple products, then take a step back and consider the last two products released... now tell me that this is the new iMac
