Celebrate Apple's vision

It amazes me to see people get bothered by Apple's esthetic upgrades. As someone pointed out, design has played a significant role in the popularity of Apple products, and that appreciation extends to the look of its stores. To not see beyond one's own computer or iPad, iPod, etc. is, well... iMyopia.

As a Manhattanite, I still take a second glance when I pass by 59th and Fifth. :p

I cant belive the fluff macrumors is covering these days. Why not cover some real stories like the Nielson ratings that came out today showing Android still grabbing more market share while Apple is treading water. Because macrumors is an Apple propaganda site and besides Apple may not in invite them to the next event for publishing articles that dont portray them in a positive light. So you put up an article about an Apple store getting new windows instead. Gimme a phuken break macrumors and go phuk yourselves while your at it.

It is intensely satisfying to see that Apple's tremendous successes have driven certain types of people absolutely bat-**** insane.

I don't know what to make of all this.

One the one hand it's cool and impressive, on the other hand it's just a shop.

I know Apple is a big company and obviously have different divisions working on different areas, but when I see the whole range of things like Phones coming out from many other companies and Apple still with pretty much just the one model and very limited range of desktop computers.

I can't help but wonder if I'd rather see them expand their range and push to make the most impressive machines in the world as opposed to how nice their shops can look.

These arguments need to quit. Have you seen Apple's stockpile of money right now? It isn't an either-or situation. If Apple were spending all of its money on this then you might have a point. In their current situation, however, you're just creating a false dilemma.

I can't wait to see the new look of the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue. Last time I was there when I purchase my wife's 11.6in MBA.

Don't you think those glass are too thick and heavy to put on? Come on Apple, you should use the same thin & light weight glass of iPad to your store.

Just kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fifth Avenue Apple Store is the best of all Apple Store all over the world!!!!

Hands down

Not a big newsyear so far

Wow so workmen placing glass on a store building is front page news

There has been an extreme lack of Mac news this past year or so. This is the best that can be done. With the slowness of a new iPhones & now iPods even the iToy market has no real news. The rumors are now being recycled again & again.

what are they doing with the old glass? seriously. I'm curious.
hopefully something good.

Don't know what is worst. The fact the City made them do it at night to force off hours pay or the fact that the guys doing this job have over-priced union wages. Couldn't they have just hired a bunch of out of work schmucks from Brooklyn that know large glass jobs better than these self-promoted dregs?

Glass $1000
Union Wages $3000
Off hours rate (additional $3000)
Insurance for job $1000

OK, He who speaks of floppy disk has calculated the weight.
2" x 10' x 32' =
2" x 120" x 384" =
92,160 cu in of glass.
12*12*12= 1728 cu in per cu ft.
92,160 / 1728 cu in per cu ft = 53.3333 cu ft.

Glass weighs 180 lbs per cu ft.

53.3333cu ft x 180 lbs = 9599.999 lbs
Rounded up = 9,600 lbs per pane.
That is allot of weight per pane.

Nice to see the video posted. Can't wait to see the finished display. Wonder if they'll ever go for any bigger glass sizes.

I love how people like to trivialize engineering feats...

I guess it's just a combination of people not being truly "wowed" by anything these days because of over saturation of things like special effects in movies / TV shows AND a general lack of knowledge on all things scientific / engineering.

Just ask yourself this: do you see any other buildings made out of huge 2" thick sheets of glass? If the answer to that is "no" you may ask yourself why that's the case... and come to the conclusion that its fracking difficult to do!

Trust me... just manufacturing those seamless pieces of glass is a feat in and of itself... let alone the transportation and assembly...

Why do people have to be so damn negative all the time? If you're not interested just don't pay attention to the story. The rest of us will think "wow, that is quite a cool and ambitious project!"
