Google should stop the sharing shenanigans. They've shared enough already. I'm sure their shareholders are happy.

Here come the Google haters.

It's obvious you guys didn't even read the article.

Google isn't just sending out pictures automatically willy-nilly.

You make an album, add the people you want to that album using faces, an INVITE who you want to see them.

I think we all know what will happen when a special type of selfie is photobombed by a pet and google decides to automatically share it.

Have you read the article?

You can turn any album into a live album. Just choose the people (and pets) you want to see, and Google Photos will automatically add photos of them to your album as you take them. Then, you can share your album with family and friends so they can be a part of special moments as they happen—no manual updates needed.”

It is a user who creates the album based on the photos of the same person or per and then can decide to share it, as they could do with any album up till now. All Google does is automatically populates this album. That is all. Where is the problem in this, exactly?

Google photos is great. But there is one thing. If I delete a certain photo in the google photos it will delete it in the photos app of the phone and vice versa. Is there any way I can back up everything in Google's photo and keep it there, regardless if I delete it from the photos app?

If you delete a photo from Google Photos it will indeed delete it from (Apple) Photos. However, if you open Google Photos, back all your photos up to Google first and then delete them from Photos, your photos with remain intact with Google (won’t be deleted after you delete them from Photos).

Except that it doesn't, of course. You're describing Apple iCloud Photos.

The most Google Photos ever does is ask you if you want to delete local photos, it never actually does it unless you allow it to, which is far more than you can say about iCloud Photos.

Fact and an explanation? That kind of rational behaviour will never catch on here. ;)

I believe the concern here is someone dying of a heart attack because of a photo uploading to a shared album that wasn't meant to be shared - such as intimate time with a SO or one night hookup.

If it would be grandma, or the grandkid after grandma posts a critique to facebook about how to improve would vary by family.

I’ll try to be clean.

The way I read this is like this. My wife has photos of our cat that she’s share with a lot of people. Google identifies photos with our cat and adds them to the album. One day while I’m on a trip she decides to send me intimate photos and during her selfie snapfest one of the kitties shows up in the background. Google says, oh look, that’s fluffy and I should share this picture. Suddenly everyone gets to see a picture of two kitties.

My thoughts exactly!

.

Except that it does of course. And YES, I am describing Google Photos and not iCloud phots (even 1-year-olds know the difference) as you can see from other comments, INDEED it does. And NO, I have not been asked by it if I would allow deleting photos from my local storage.
But definitely a nice try

Simple, do not use or share any live albums at all then, we can still create albums manually, as before.

As above. If we deliberately put ourselves in a morally dodgy situation, Google’s AI should be the least of our worries.

When you have a photo in your (Apple) Photos which is also uploaded (backed up) to Google Photos, this is what happens:

a) If you delete it from (Apple) Photos, it will not be deleted from Google Photos.

b) If you delete it from Google Photos, Google will ask you for a delete permission from your device and will then remove it from both Apple and Google photo libraries.

I regularly empty all of my Apple Photos from two devices once they have been uploaded to Google and their copies remain in Google albums just fine.

That's not entirely what happens on my iPhone X, iOS 12

a) When I delete from Photos App, it disappears from the Google Photos app.

b) When I delete from Google Photos app, it asks me if I want to allow "Google Photos" to delete the photo. Now If I chose Don't allow, nothing happens. If I choose Delete, it gets deleted from both, Google Photos and phones Photo app.

Everything is by default, I have not changed any settings on neither apps.

I have just tested it again in iOS 12 on default Google Photos app settings as well and if the photo in question had already been backed up with Google Photos it will not disappear if you delete it from (Apple) Photos. If you delete a photo from the (Apple) Photos app BEFORE it was synchronised by Google Photos, then indeed it won’t make it to Google’s photo library. It just won’t reach it in the first place, rather than being there and then disappearing.

Your b) scenario (deleting from Google) works exactly the same for me.

What is morally dodgy about two consenting adults?

Sorry, but what do you mean? I assume when I take a photo and it appears in the photos app, then I open Google photos app and I see it in there, it has been backed up. Do I have to back it up again from the Google photos app?

When you open Google Photos app you will see all the photos there, already backed up (saved) to Google and not yet. The ones that had not yet been saved will have a small round icon with the arrows in the lower right corner (see the pic).

Once this icon is gone, it means the photo has been properly backed up in Google Photos. You can also see the backup status at the top of the app, just below the search bar on the right (see another pic).
