So been going around and around with this box and windows and updates and boot loops because windows wanted to update in the middle of me doing something else and refused to proceed until it was done with its task.

Then fought with the thumb drive I was trying to use that windows wouldn't read wanted to format then complained the thumb drive was write protected.

Finally got that sorted and the motherboard eufi misbehaving next detecting the new bios on the drive then telling me it's not detected so more tinkering and a day later same thing.

Even tried Internet update and it failed telling me to check my connections. Ugh it's wired.

So I'm at a loss and about ready to cut my losses and just walk away from this system. I do have a thought that perhaps there is too much of a difference between the current bios and new one I'm trying to update to. Maybe I need a couple incremental updates to bring the board up to speed? I'm not sure. I am getting to the point where I just don't want to mess with things at all anymore.

Maybe I can build a new system for 1k-1500$ I'm not sure. I'm not sure I want to even fiddle with things anymore. Pricing is insane.
If you're in the U.S, you can still build a reasonable system for $1.5k. Especially if you have a microcenter near you. For example, Ryzen 7 7700x, B650 board and 32gb DDR5 ram bundle for $499

Just doing a quick 2 min build on the microcenter site

7800x3d bundle, 32gb DDR5, 1 tb ssd, RTX 5070, 750 watt psu, case, dual tower air cooler was $1585

Knock down to the $499 bundle with the 7700x for $100 less and you're under $1500

Unfortunately no microcenter near by, just a best buy or Walmart and that's iffy on parts. I guess there is always (sc)Amazon but that's sketchy.

I booted up the bios eufi or whatever it wants to be known as a little bit ago and tried the Internet connection set up thing again. It failed. But I noticed the time and date in the settings was from years ago... Perhaps it's default time and date when the battery goes out on things.

Might explain a few things. Might have a battery to change out.

I did just realize that I still have the decommissioned MSI B450 rig that I was running Linux on until I borked it during an update. The CPU was the ryzen 2200g.

I do think this is a somewhat more updated system and might take a few upgrades a bit more heartily especially if some light gaming and media viewing is on the menu.

Still doing some window shopping, trying to catch my bearings since I've been out of the computer game for a while.

Spotted an updated MSI B550 plus board for about $150 and an AMD ryzen 5 5500 6 core 3.6ghz CPU for 90 bucks. Don't seem to bad. Ram? Have some DDR4 laying around. Case CPU and even an old 1080 which should allow the system to boot. Also have old installs of OS's on a couple m.2 drive and even a fresh one laying around and could once again try Linux on the potentially cursed box 😳 🤔

Top of the line? Nope. Slight upgrade with room to grow? Possibly. Still just some thinking out loud.

What's your budget?

Which MSI motherboard are you talking about, there's a number of models from MSI, which differing features.
If I was looking for an AM4 socketed cpu, I'd be focusing my attention on 5800X3D

Personally, if I'm looking to a build a new system, I'd be looking for something more then a slight upgrade. AM5 based builds can be very expensive in today's market, I get it. I probably would be leaning into an AM4 build myself, I actually have one but I'm not looking to upgrade anytime soon.

Here's a table that chatgpt produced, I think this is helpful to see what you can get with AM4 based processors.

If I were to upgrade my system, I'd probably be looking at the 5700x or more likely the 5800x3d, but that's me

I've heard AMD is going to re-release the 5800X3d, so I assume the pricing listed will creep up.

sheesh this game is rough on even a 5950x. @slitherjef in this case I would, maybe, think about switching to an Intel build (if you have a microcenter near you, they have bundle for 530 that includes 32gb ram, cpu and motherboard).
