New guys: Dead-pixel count?

after 12 years of PC's and if a dead pixel is all I have to wory about..........Hm. There are some companies in Norway were you can buy a pixel guarantee (on PCs) for 20-30$ which last as long as the machine.
I've had four laptops before. I've ordered the MBP 17" with high res. I'm (or was) really afraid of pixel errors, but luckily I'm protected through my insurance (lasts five years). I called them up and they would replace my MBP if I spilled on it, lost it, 1 dead pixel, weird sound etc. Totalt prize: 80$.
can we get a poll for this? im bout to order one and this is prolly the only thing im worrying about, but from reading many forums, there arn't many posts about ppl with dead pixels, so i guess the percentage is quite small.

I bought online with education discount and I don't have an apple store near me. Any idea if being firm will get apple phone support to send me a new one. I know I might be overreacting about 1 pixel but when I pay this much for a device I would expect apple to have at least a 14 day doa pixel guarentee.
and If I got the gloss display it is classified as CTO by apple does that even qualify for a return, restocking fee or not?

So not worth it. As you'll see from my post about my backlight bleeding, you have to wait for labels, then send it back, then when they finally receive it they'll send you a new one. I'd so take the one pixel over a horrible backlight bleed 🙁 Just treasure your new baby! It's like a little birthmark!
The school I work at has its own authorized Apple Store integrated into the main computer store. I picked up my SR 15in MBP yesterday and it had one slightly off center dead pixel.
I took it back this afternoon and asked the manager if I could exchange it. Basically they had me fill out a work order and said that their techs would examine it and phone Apple to see if they considered it defective.
The manager went over the usual, "6-7 dead pixels is the industry standard spiel" and told me that they'd try and phone it in but it was unlikely that Apple would authorize the exchange. However, he did note that I would be receiving a case number and if I wanted to argue some more I could try calling Apple directly and I might have a better chance going that route. He made it sound like if I complained enough that Apple would probably authorize the exchange. This might be something you guys will want to try if you've already been denied by the Apple store you actually purchased your MBP from.
I have my fingers crossed that they'll be nice just this once and just let me exchange it without going through the hassle. Good luck to the rest of you.

I am suppose to receive mine tomorrow. So I hope I wont have any dead/stuck pixel but thank to this thread, I am now worried.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Could I get a 160GB 2.2 Ghz MBP exchanged, or should I go with the stock to ensure I can exchange it?

You should probably contact Apple though to see how they would handle it. I know I've heard of people getting refurb units that actually had different components (i.e. extra RAM, bigger hard drives, etc.) which might presumbaly have been returned CTO orders, so who knows.
I just heard back from my Apple Store and apparently they were able to call it in and convince Apple that my MBP was defective with only 1 dead pixel.
They are going to call me once they get a replacement in (my store only had 10 2.2 SR MBP and they were all pre-ordered). I also asked if it was ok for me to examine the screen before I left and they said no problem.
Hopefully my replacement will be perfect.

Yes my MBP was the stock 2.2 model. I'd say its worth a shot to try and get it exchanged. I mean you really don't have anything to lose at this point. You're already down 2K from the purchase.
bobcubsfan: By menu bar are you referring to the dock? Can you post a screenshot? Your description doesn't sound like dead pixels.

Just receive my SR MBP 2.2 ang no dead/stuck pixel and the keyboard is perfectly flat. wow im so glad and happy. but at the same time i feel sorry for those of you who didnt have my luck. BUT, wait til you get your remplacement one, you'll be forgetting very fast that wait let me tell you that. Ok im way too excited to finish my post...
with todays level of tech, even one dead/stuck pixel is unacceptable....especially on the measly 6bit TN panels most laptops come with.
if mine has one, when and if it arrives, its going straight back...no questions about it.
although continuing to endure this agonising wait will my MBP slowly makes its way over from china on TNT's cheapest shipping option, i really hope i dont get any faults on it. its a premium product that i paid a premium for so therefore i expect it to be nigh on perfect. surely apple realise this....they are marketed as pro models, so surely for a professional absolute quality is high on the agenda? im not a pro at anything yet, but i am a mechanical engineering student, (going for a masters) and i am a stickler for top notch build quality, heck i certainly paid for it to be top notch.
if it does have such a defect, well im not going thru apples shipping shenanigans....its a PITA, ill drive to the nearest apple store, no matter how far.

Dead pixels don't have anything to do with build quality or the premium cost of a machine. If LCD manufacturers threw out every panel with a dead pixel, the cost would skyrocket, and the cost of laptops would rise accordingly as well.
There are plenty of premium $3000 and $4000 laptops, TV's, etc. and all of them have the possibility of 1 or multiple dead pixels.
This idea that Apple should somehow be expected to never ship a laptop with a dead pixel is kind of unrealistic.
