$490? Really? One of two things is right here. Either Apple is out of touch and doesn't understand what price point they need to hit to attract emerging markets, or another rumor based article is just guessing at prices.
Pretty sure Apple discovered the magic number of $199.99 long ago with the iPod Nano. Then again, it is Apple and they're as predictable as a bi-polar girlfriend at a swimsuit sale.

Well since there's never been an iPhone 5C before I guess it would just be a C not an updated C which would be 5SC
I guess I'll just get the 5S and a slap a case on it then
Except for us peasants that like Apple products, but can't afford to shell out the big bucks every year for a new phone or want to get stuck in some bulls**t cell phone contract...
Remember, not every Apple product release is aimed at "you." (Not *you* per se, but everyone with this attitude that Apple must please *ME*.)
Can't be if rumors are true. First, the screen will be bigger. Second, the camera is supposed to be the same as in the iPhone 5. Third, the processor will have to be better.
Releasing a colorful plastic iphone 5 at iPhone 4 price makes a lot of sense to me. They could always bring that price down in the future if they get it wrong off the bat.

iPhone 5C 32GB - $99
iPhone 5C 64GB - $199
iPhone 5S 32GB - $199
iPhone 5S 64GB - $299
iPhone 5S 128GB - $399
The slight price overlap makes you decide what is more important, more storage or a better phone, which is very Apple like.

Apple doesn't need to use solar energy to power their data centers. All they have to do is use some magnets and field coils to harness the energy from Steve Jobs rolling in his grave.
He never would have let this fly. I think we're really seeing the start of decline of Apple without his leadership.

I hope you are right, that they scale the storage on the 5S while retaining the same price points. 16 gb is no longer the value it was a few years ago. Especially if they add a 12 megapixel camera.

In China, many buy the phone outright without 1 or 2 year contracts.
Why? Phone numbers are a dime a dozen and people can buy telephone numbers without contracts at any convenience shop or news stand. It's simple.
There ARE contracted telephone numbers, but for many Chinese living in the mainland, they pay a monthly fee (which is dirt cheap) while paying for only what they use (phone and internet time).
So, if those people are looking for a phone, $500 US is very very high.
I thought the 5C would be priced around $300 for the phone. This has "fail" hovering over it.
I work in China and I gotta say, $500 is upper middle class for the Chinese. And those are seriously in the minority of the population in any city in China.

Be more specific, never let what fly? Surely, you can't mean plastic enclosures? The original iMac and lamp shape redesign were made of plastic. Both under Jobs reign. The original iPhone was plastic. The original iPod was plastic. The iBooks were plastic.
This redesign reminds me of the white plastic iBooks.
Agreed. And this makes sense because they are already producing the 128GB chips for the iPad now, so why not use economies of scope to your advantage in regards to the storage chips.

No. Thank you for your post which was a waste of time for everyone. I haven't been keeping up with the rumors and I asked a simple question that I wanted answered by someone more informed than I am.
