What exactly could they fix? Is there some other material they could use for the base that would work just as well, not be more expensive and not cause any other issues? I’m assuming if there was they would have switched.
Apple was careless here. Everyone knows that Apple, unlike any company in the world, are expected to bend the laws of physics to make things work in ways that physics doesn’t allow. That they did not modify the quantum makeup of the elements that went into the creation of the HomePod OR alter, molecularly, every device in the world that has anything even remotely “varnish-ish” covering it such that the HomePod would not “do what silicon does” to it, is just another example of why Tim Apple has to go and be replaced by someone that has never run a company the size of Apple before.

I shouldn’t HAVE to, but… /s

This is NOT a new HomePod, it just old stock nothing has changed except removing some components and replacing the chip. This was expected.

Apple coasters are being made and swiftly available for $59.

You would think Marques Brownlee would have better things to spend his time on.
He’s a YouTuber. For them, content is content. Likely to be one of the most watched, shared, commented videos this month. Even if he knows deep down inside, while scripting it, staging it, blocking it, shooting it and editing it, that there’s very little “there” there, he’s working for the algorithm, so there’s no way he’s NOT gonna do it :)

It's a shame, because this would be super easy to solve. They just need a thin hard surface on the bottom of the ring so the silicone still does its dampening job without making direct contact with the surface.

Of course there is! This is just Apple not testing in normal "home" environments. They are testing only in their fancy, glitzy glass-laden labs.

Every time he says, “Hey Siri” in his video, my HomePod here keeps answering him… OMG!

STOP!

I keep mine sitting on a small, round cork coaster. Mainly to reduce the transmission of vibrations to the table it is sitting on but I guess it prevents any plasticizers in the base from affecting the table finish.

It's been an issue for decades with A/V equipment. The feet used leech into some wood finishes. It's nothing really new.

Using inert plastic would eliminate the leeching issue, but the hard plastic defeats the purpose of the silicone which is to dampen vibration.

I graphene ceramic coated the bases of my 2 OG HomePods & the plastic faux wood ikea furniture top they sit on.

The real wood surfaces in my house have acrylic clear coat, so it doesn’t bother them.

easy fixes.

use a coaster on stained-only surfaces otherwise

“This should be super easy to solve, they should just let the vibrations sing out as a buzz instead of dampening them. WHY DIDN’T THEY DO THAT??” :)

Well it is really easy to solve by putting something under neath lol

Come on Tim, great time to make some extra money on a special HomePod stand. Wouldn't put it passed them as they do charge $19 for the Apple polishing cloth 😄

I just use these for that kind of thing. 4" cork coasters. Damp the vibrations, protect the table, look like they belong in a living room.
