This is probably the same device as the Homepod w/ screen. A Homepod with a screen. A screen with a speaker. A HOMEPOD WITH A SCREEN. A SCREEN WITH A SPEAKER. Are you getting it??

IYKYK.
We get it. It is a hub, not simply a HomePod with a screen. IYDKYDK.

I'm guessing $299.
This is becoming a serious issue, people are constantly being information and sensory bombarded to the point of being unhealthy. Forget about the needles e-waste aspect for a second, critical information at times is needed but constant rudimentary information is not. Does someone really need to check the weather every second in many places before heading out, do people need constant news updates that most of the time is rubbish, does someone need to constantly check lights, cameras, deliver, etc on every device always. This sounds like an ADD/ADHD constant stimulation mental and physical health issue causing acute and chronic fatigue.

If anything we need less electronic devices and the one we do have are quite capable, this really is unneeded and the people who do feel it’s needed require a wellness retreat.

Best post in the thread.......

I will take the over on that. Especially since Google already seems to have a likely similar product that starts at $549...

IMO the only way we could get a $300 number would be if Apple made it a two-part device like tablet plus dock, and one could buy just the dock component separately. But I doubt that because that would make a kludge for marketing purposes. IMO Apple will market a device that clearly presents as something distinct [hub or whatever].

I’m gonna go with 449

But something we will be able to find at the Costco, target and Best Buy’s of the world for 399 and lower before too long

So we are catching 37 story rocket boosters and Apples most innovative product is an iPad with an integrated stand?

I’d prefer this to be a HomePod with MagSafe support so I can chuck my phone or iPad down when cooking or whatever. I wonder if current iPads would work with such a device using the Magic Keyboard magnets?

If it becomes the central ‘brain’ of a smarter home, that brings Apple Intelligence to all 9 of my HomePods (assuming Apple Intelligence can do some smart home stuff), then it’s a day one purchase.

If it’s a less functional touch screen than all my other touch screens (iPhones/iPads), that sits in one place, then, eh, no
I’d prefer Apple intelligence chips built into the HomePods themselves. They’re already pretty slow at responding to requests, this is only going to be slower

Cooking timers, recipes off YouTube/Web, quick FaceTime chat, viewing your Notes, Music controller, Apple Photos slideshows/frame mode, weather station (add in some 1st/3rd party remote probes from a Govee or someone)...

I can think of quite a few things

But ...

It all depends if it's priced correctly in or close to impulse buy territory

(Apple customer impulse buy .. so still not "cheap" of course)
This reads like the computer of the future as we saw it in the 1970's.

No need speculate, as described we don’t need this but I am thinking something is missing to make sense …

And be able to give commands to play Apple Music, that means it needs a set of 4 speakers, so Siri will not have an excuse not to show you on the screen, like name of song and any question ask.

Or you could get a $99 Nest hub or Echo Show and grab your iPad when you need it for the Apple notes/photos. I do think there is room for improvement for an improved family kitchen device, but unless Siri gets a serious brain upgrade I don't think Apple's offering will get much traction.

HomeOS - the LAST thing they need is another OS when their software has gotten horribly buggy in recent years.
I am not Apple apologist but my Macbook Pro 3, Mac desktop, iPhone pro max 15, Apple watch Ultra 2 and iPad Air5 as well as all other Apple devices in my family work just fine and updated regularly.

I think this may be a good product after all, at 199 or so. Not that we personally need it but there might be people needing it (with accessibility options)

After a couple failed HomePod in my experience, I'm not planning on getting any standalone speaker from Apple.

if this product is tied to a monthly subscription via an Apple alarm system. forget it. I'm out. I dont like subscription models.

I see the rendering inspiration was a Magic Trackpad 1

I don't even know who would want this thing, or "why" ... but none of it will matter if it's overpriced

I'm a little skeptical about Apples ability to do something new like this and price it to actually sell
No kidding.

Rant…

I’ve always saved up for their better stuff, but increasingly, there is more and more that just doesn’t justify the price. HomePod, too much for what you get. AirPod maxes. Upper end iPad Pro 13 inch - I wanted this one bad but the price got me to shrink to a 11” for the utility. Never bought a Magic Keyboard - Even though I wanted one. The iPhone is the only thing I go to the pro max for. And I did do an ultra Apple Watch but I never bought a current gen ss version of the apple watch before either - always 1 or two years old ss or aluminum. Vision Pro? Lol no way at those prices.

I get that pricing me out means they are getting the most out of me. But that sometimes makes me feel like I’m being milked for everything I’ve got. I love the devices I get. And I doubt I would leave the walled garden. Alas…

Rant over…

But I agree… while I could see purchasing this, it would have to be priced competitively to meet a need for me an iPad I paid $800+ for somehow didn’t.

I’m surprised at home many on here are completely discounting a segment that already currently exists and Apple isn’t in it.

We have iPads, iPhones and Apple TVs, but I appreciate having a google nest just for quick access that’s always in the kitchen. We don’t use it a ton, but for the $49, it’s an easy buy.

Now if apple releases one, I’d like a better calendar support and other widgets/apps. We use paprika app and having that right there in the kitchen without having our iPhone/ipad out and moving around would be nice. Could a specialized stand work instead? Sure. But again, in a multi device household, it can be a more permanent fixture. Apple TV requires a large tv to run. Phones depend on everyone else to be present. I just hope they make their software with home automation much more robust with this next release.
In your usage scenario, and of those of many others, you require multiples of this device. You want a standalone, permanent device in the kitchen, living room, maybe upstairs, in the study, etc. If you only buy one you need to carry it around to the different rooms, then you just have another iPad with a stand. Will you really run downstairs into the kitchen to change the light settings in your bedroom? No, you take your phone out of your pocket or do it via your watch. Need a second FaceTime device? Use your phone. Would you really buy this for your kids instead of an iPad where they can actually do other things with?
Personally, I see very little use for this, in its current suggested usage, but I was wrong before and the Apple Watch did become its own device. So, let’s see.

As long as A/C units that have Matter support are sparse, adapters cost a fortune, and the same goes for radiator thermostats and almost all home appliances (robot vacuums still sparsely supported in Apple's ecosystem), this "last piece of the puzzle" is hard to sell.
