HomeOS - the LAST thing they need is another OS when their software has gotten horribly buggy in recent years.

I'm really looking forward to a HomeOS. And the new home hub.

I'll be really stoked if the OS will handle my home automation and security video cams that I now have running on a 2019 Mac Mini 24/7 for the last five years.

Well they won't drop appleTV as a hub. I am guessing you don't know very much about this space? HomePods and TVs are all hubs, They act as redundant hubs if one is unplugged another one takes over. You can set a primary one. This will just be another one.

Amazon and Google are in no way ahead. They are both completely cloud based, nothing happens on the device. If the internet goes down. you cannot control anything. Apple is completely local and a lot faster.

Amazon have scaled back their hardware division and had Alexa and echos devices never get any significant updates. Their whole approach is terrible. None of their devices are consistent even in the same generation. Their software is unusable and the Alexa Skills kit has not been feature updated in 4 years.

Google Home is much better, but development is slow. Actually the best thing you can do for a a smart home is to use Home Assistant. You can then use Apple, google or Amazon or all at the same time.
remember when iPad could be used as hub and then it couldn't

A calendar would be nice, almost like a family calendar on the wall with everyone's schedule, chores, etc. Could be used as a video feed for security cameras. Could possibly act as a home speakerphone, VoIP?

No matter how it's peddled, hardwired ethernet (if not PoE) is a must for me.

Try to tell me they don’t make 70% on the cleaning towel. Say it with a straight face.
you made the claim. surely you have the data to back it up...

reports on MR that I see have profits in the 35% region these days...

but if you want to claim MR stories are wrong...

In which product or service category does Apple have a 70% profit margin?
if i had to pick one area they make big margins it would be Watch bands and cases.
you can pick up a knockoff for $2 for phones that while not packaged nicely, fell much the same.
the volume and ease of production must surely make their retail price a high margin item.

most other things they need to compete with Windows and Android devices.
so they can pitch themselves as aspirational products, they still need to compete better one price and value.

overall the 70% claim is way off...

so you want to cherry pick single low volume items?

not your broad first claim was it? ;)
We know without a doubt Apple has massive markups well beyond 70% on any kind of cable or other accessory, memory/ HDD upgrades, Mac Pro wheels, monitor hinge on displays, matte screen option on any device it’s offered. I’m sure there’s plenty more. And if Apple could get 70% on every single sku, they would.

iPhone 15 pro max profit margin: 59.5%. I wouldn’t call that way off considering they blow way past that on other things. By the way, their profit margin on services the last 3 years was 72% and accounts for over 25% of their business..

Where’s your data?
you started the claims... so where's yours? :)

if you can read a graph you will see it ranges over the years from 37% to 42%...

end of story i'd say, so maybe delete/edit your original claim ;)

Where’s your data?
Oh look MR reporting today from Apple quarterly sales:

"Gross margin for the quarter was 46.9 percent, compared to 45.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. Apple also declared a quarterly dividend payment of $0.25 per share, payable on February 13 to shareholders of record as of February 10."

Not 70%... :)

And that's gross not net.
