the thing that continually bugs me with this is Apple's push of iLife when the iBook doesn't have the juice to comfortably do hardly anything useful in GarageBand, iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD. the whole "i" lineup is pretty useless for iLife, with the exception of the iMac G5.

I run garageband on my imac dv se 400mhz G3
It's slow but it works pretty well

The 9550 is not listed in the supported video cards section on the apple "core image" page. Neither is there a mention of "core image" on the ibook page.

I don't imagine apple would omit something like that.
Also, its not just programmability, but horsepower that is needed for this feature, no?

It supports Core Image. Core Image requires what would be a DirectX 9 card(for programmability). The 9550 supports this. This means ripples for iBooks! :D

UK back up, but aaaahhhh! They increased the price by £20. That works out at a £10 saving when upgrading the RAM over the old price. That is a bit poor really

I've just ordered another Mini (my second) to run my TV/play DVD's/iTunes etc on my main TV. The price drops/free wireless means I can now justify the faster superdrive machine and the new, cheaper EyeTv means that it's more affordable. I'm happy :)

Well, I currently own a gateway PC with a flat screen monitor: 15", 1024x768 resolution. So, even though that's all the 14" has, it will still be a slight improvement for me!

compares the 9550 to FX5200 and such. Desktop versions, but hey it's something.

This is potentially EXCELLENT news!

The 9550 beat the 5200 and 5500 in those reviews. The surprising thing was that the nVIDIA 5500 and Radeon 9550 both had 128 MB VRam. The 5200, however, had 256 MB.

I'd like to see how this may translate to the current 1.5 GHz PowerBook w/ a 64 MB nVIDIA 5200 and the latest 1.42 GHz iBook w/ a 32 MB Radeon 9550. I think it may be interesting.

"TFT XGA"

How does that relate to other computers?

All notebooks use a TFT screen. XGA refers to resolution (1024x768). It's on par with Dell's cheapest, but looks a bit shabby compared to other displays.

Anyone think the PB will drop in price...the store is still closed as I type.
Also is the ibook aluminum alloy? This is important, as I plan to mistreat it..spank it periodically :p

They may have been readjusting prices so they line up between the US and UK.

so are all the stores up except the US and Canada stores?

Kinda looks that way! Just go and have a coffee, a donut or two, put on some music and come back in 10 minutes. I'm sure it will be back there soon!

Would this resolution STOP anyone from buying the computer? I know it wasn't improved, but how "bad" is it?

To clarify: I'm a student at Ohio State studying Education. $1000 is a huge difference between computers (ibook, pb). Just trying to figure out what to do.

I know we have a lot of disappointment this morning, but I for one got everything I asked for. A lot of people wanted a 12" PB for 999 (myself included) what we got today was pretty friggin close. BT standard. Scrolling Trackpad. Sudden Motion Sensor for HD. Core Image supported Vid Card. All Intangibles minus screen spanning are now here on the iBook. We got a processor bump. RAM bump - which not only has faster bus speed (now equal to PB) but also has 512 with an entirely open slot (eat that PB). The only things we didnt get was a HD that runs as fast, audio in, screen spanning. Oh wait...thats it (just comparing 12" PB). Ill gladly give up those options for a portable laptop and save $500. Not to mention the better battery life, still more durable and more wifi receptive case. Could it have been better? Of course. But I am still one very happy first-time switcher.

Yes. It will stop me. I have a mental block about paying good money for this resolution with the font artifacts and display defects. I'll have to hold out till the end of sept and see if the powerbook line fares any better in its upgrade cycle.

US store is up

The US store has returned
