It's a day when there is no sales tax on computers and other school supplies.
Sales-Tax FREE doesn't give it away?

Maybe I've been living under a rock. Is this an Apple program?

tikibangout said:
No, only a select few, very few states do it.
Oh. Okay. Now that makes sense. I wonder if Apple applies the exemption for online orders that day. I'm sure it doesn't apply in sunny California.

Why would anyone want a 1024x655 display over a 1024x768 display? I understand the aesthetic argument for a wide screen, but like others on here have pointed out, if it's just a loss of pixels, it's a really bad idea.

How about 1152x768 for a 13" widescreen display?

WOW new iBooks. I'm for sure getting one now!...wait...Maybe not..I don't like the white -- too girly.

too bad they're not black (same material though)

Be mature! the iBooks pick up hot girls not make you look girly. Ever heard of the saying "real men wear pink"?

If only Apple told their Store employees when things will be released...
Then I would know, my brother happens to be a Lead Genius in CA. But seeing as they do not, I agree with the speculation of a release early next week. Let's hope. My dad is planning on getting a new iBook, and so now we are waiting a week to see what happens.

Got to agree the hotties dig the 'books. They don't know there's a difference btw M$ and Apple, so they certainly don't care about the difference btw PB/iBook.

I just hope the mini's have a faster video card for core image and better or more default ram. Two slots would be nice. I don't need built in bluetooth, airport would be nice but not required either to keep a low price point. Gigabit ethernet would be good as well.

Side note: Anyone find the Napster ad on macrumors just a little ironic?

To the point with this..

I'd *love* to own a mac, in fact I've been waiting for this mini revamp for months.

Here's the thing though: Apple would be foolish if at least one of these versions doesnt have a GPU upgrade that allows it to use core image. Sure, I want all the other things, including the faster CPU, but the GPU is the deal killer. I'm not going to purchase a crippled product that cant even take advantage of all the features an OS has to offer.

My guess: CPU bump to 1.5 on at least one of the versions, GPU bump to allow core image, default memory to 512. I'm willing to bet the $699 versions offers ALL 3 of the above while the other two cheaper ones have a combination there-of.

For me it's simple though, no core image support and I walk away. I know it's only used for widgets right now, but I'm sure the OS will take more and more advantage of it in the future.

And to the person who JUST purchased a new mini, return it ASAP to where you purchased it and wait for the new ones, you'll kick yourself if you dont and you have small window here to do it.

Texas offers the sales tax free days on Aug 5 & 6. Walking into an Apple store in the mall on those days is your best bet. I would guess that the Apple online store would still charge you tax.

And you know this for sure?

Please, do share your information source...

*sighs* see previous post. A little common sense goes a long away.
Unless Apple has a G5 motherboard ready NOW along with a newly designed PowerBook, and has sample chips they are going to devote their time and energies to creating a dual core Pentium M PowerBook. Intel 3 months ago (Check that 4 months ago) was RUNNING a demo laptop with dual cores.
Sure as **** Apple has those demo chips NOW and are working on creating the next iteration of the PowerBook with them in mind. Think about it. Apple is NOT going to invest tons of money into a G5 PowerBook at this late of a date just for one single revision before they jump to Intel.

Also IBM can't seem to meet current demand for the G5. How do you think a G5 PowerBook would play out? If it was introduced in say September (Which it won’t because Jobs wouldn’t have gone on stage and said where is the G5 PowerBook if they had samples running in their labs prepping a new PowerBook) do you think they would have yields of a brand new chip ramped up before Spring the supposed timeframe when the first gen of x86 Macs will show up? Again they would be sinking huge amounts of money into a chip that is going nowhere. Again a little common sense here. There will be no G5 PowerBook unless Apple rebrands the Pentium M a G5-M or something.

Ah crap I just purchased a mac mini today and get home and see this WHY ME WHY ME....... Should I take it back??????

Personally, I would. Just a few more days. And then another few days for them to ship (or a week if you BTO).

Or just keep it and get some money back because Apple will surely reduce the price on current models. How much? Maybe $50 or so.

Well, yes, but right now, I think a lot of current Mac users would like a new machine but are hesitant to invest BIG $$$ in a new machine (especially with an integrated display like the iMac G5) before the x86 machines are released. A slightly more powerful Mac Mini would certainly fill that gap well.

You hit the nail on the head, Mike. The mac mini is the perfect machine to tide the average user over until part of (or the majority of) the lineup goes intel. The good thing is, you could always find a use for a mac mini (i.e. iTunes server) once you replace it.

It seems like a given that any update from here on out will automatically have 512MB of RAM standard as well as a 64MB video card.

What I really hope for would be a 64 mb standard as well as a 60 gig standard (that probably won't happen tho). That way I can just buy it at the store instead of doing BTO.

IMO, any reduction in price is going to be so minimal as to not be worth it. If you bought it today, bring the damn thing back, or at least don't open it till Tuesday. Then you can make an informed decision if you'd rather have the cash back or not.

No chance of a $399 Mac mini. That's too bad. It's overpriced at $699 no matter what the configuration.

This comment is kind of funny. That's like saying a $20 meal at a certain restaurant is overpriced no matter what they give you. It's sort of premature to call it overpriced without actually knowing what the new configuration will be, don't you think?

Looks to me like they'll just make the SuperDrive standard on the $1299 version of the 14-incher, and maybe on the 12 as well.

It must not be a feature that is convicing people to buy PowerBooks instead, so it's a simple decision to put DVD burners in all iBooks.

I for one would very much welcome a SuperDrive in the 12" iBook -- and of course, if it's a new model (and not just a price change for the top iBook), we're also talking most likely about more RAM, also welcome.

I hope the superdrive somes standard. Isn't it like a normal thing nowadays in many laptops?

Anyway, Apple is always in the forefront with adopting these new technologies in their offerings as standard.

With all due respect iEric, are you nuts? Black is for dime-a-dozen pc's.

"Is that an hp or a dell or a sony...or is that an apple?" I SHUDDER at the thought!

dude... a black ibook w/ that glowing white apple logo would kick total ass and make it distinguishable b/w a regular Dull notebook @ the same time

DOOM!

I'm hope the 699 or even the 599 model will be able to play Doom 3! They could use the GPU from the Powerbook G4 17'. I would buy.

Now that wouldn't be a problem. You aren't losing any pixels that way. If they do release widescreen, then I hope to god its 1152x768.

isnt it 1280 x 854 sounds better?
my speculation is 64MB Mobility Radeon 9700, G4 1.5GHz, 60GB HDD, 512MB RAM, BT2.0, USB2.0, FW400, ComboDrive, AP extreme
nearly the same as 15 inch powerbook config...

then i would press 1-click immediately
because my Late 2001 iBook just certified....

i bought my pb because ibooks didn't have a superdrive. i regretted it tho, because a month after i did, the pretty g4 ibooks with the superdrive option was avalible for half the price. gah! i don't know if i should sell my 12" 1ghz pb and get one of these widescreen ibooks. i am still not convinced the intel's will be so much faster, and there is no way there will be a g5 in a laptop soon, or even, at all. pm me if you have advice.

somone said they wanted 2 ram slots in the mac mini, and there already is. they are just too small to support the 1gb sticks, so they just put 2 512s in there for thier 1gb ram config.
