Just examining my screen visually, the brightness is very even with barely noticeable dimming towards the edges.

However if I use my calibrator, I measure 10% dimming on the right side and there's a negative hot spot on at the middle of the left edge with 17% dimming. This is not visually noticeable though.

I suspect the uniformity is worse than other dedicated wide gamut screens.

Thanks for the feedback. That probably is about right for a consumer panel like you mentioned. It's good enough for 99% of owners. Those who need proper monitors for critical color correction will spend more to get an Eizo or NEC. I too notice some slight unevenness on mine at the R side of the screen but it's been consistent with the ones at the store so I guess they all are like that. The backlight bleed is much improved over the non-Retina 27 Apple Cinema Display I use with my 2010 Mac Pro.

You guys have "blotchiness" on single colors (filling the screen with white/red/green/etc)? The backlight bleed is within reason for me, but the brightness variations over the screen is a bit of a turnoff tbh, seems it's getting worse too.

Mine (i7, 580,1TB) Has a very noticeable tint shift left to right, it is more warm/yellow on the right side, especially the lower right corner.

However brightness is very even, almost no bleed, no dead pixels, and no ghosting/retention.

That would drive me crazy, I can't stand tint shifts :) I will probably return this and try another one, too much money to not feel content.

The thing is, I am out of the 14 days exchange period. And with a lot of video editing jobs on a tight schedule, it would be very difficult for me to be without the iMac even for a day or two.

It is however extremely annoying, once you start noticing it :(

While I totally agree that you should never settle for a screen with noticeable defects, at the other extreme if it is absolute perfection you seek you will never be content because that does not exist.

I feel your pain and ofc work takes precedence, it really sucks when you start noticing things like this :/

Most definitely, perfect is not what I'm looking for, just feeling good with the purchase :)

Honestly, I'm a total "cursed" perfectionist. I have newer bought anything that I've been perfectly happy with. Computers, cameras, TV's, Cars, house, speakers, phones, clothes, dogs, etc. I'm always able to find and pinpoint faults.

Closest thing to perfection up until now is my Steinhart watch - OCEAN One VINTAGE Red (380€) My friends 10.000€ Rolex on the other hand.. several flaws.

Anyway, with that in mind, I will probably newer get the perfect iMac.. Back to work then :)

Have to say I checked mine last night, black screen zero light bleed and a white screen was great no yellowing at all. Probably the best iMac screen I've had. My late 2015 which I sold had some pronounced backlight bleed, but this screen is pretty amazing.

I checked the 2015 in the store today, same blotchiness as mine, seemed to have less bleeding but couldn't say for sure to ambient light.

I do notice some varying brightness on mine and the some slight blotchiness just off center to the left on mine. It's mild but noticeable. But it's nowhere near as bad as the 2015s when I totally gave up after trying 2 separate BTO units.

These screens will never be perfect and you should exchange if you are not happy as you can't unsee it once you know the defect is there. The unevenness is worse if you are looking at anything with gray so those editing B&W photos may not be pleased due to the tints. Calibration won't help if the blotchiness is severe and in different places. Only if you spend several thousands on an Eizo will you be able to calibrate it out section by section. Those super high standard monitors have built in hardware and software to adjust for tints and brightness variation for various parts of the screen. Again, the cost of the iMac is what you would pay for just the monitor!

I'd head over to the Apple Store like I did and see if other units are like yours. You need to check them with gray backgrounds such as one used to test older iMacs back in the day when people had very bad screens here where you can generate test patterns on the spot with gray bars. Be careful as you will find defects in ALL screens.

I had an Eizo CG-series monitor many years ago, I had to replace it 3 times to get a good one (they actually drove it out after hours personally due to this), I think I'm just screen cursed :D
I will return mine and hope the second one is better, if not, I will probably just stick with it because it's an amazing piece of hardware.

Wow! That's service! But for the price, that's what I'd expect. Good luck and keep us all posted. The screen is truly the reason I got mine. It's just another computer without the 5K display. I just hope we didn't open up a can of worms for other owners :) My feeling is that not everyone is sensitive to the hue/tint/brightness shifts. We all perceive things differently. But those who color correct, whether for print or photos, will definitely be more sensitive.

Yes. They will. You have a 1 year warranty but not sure if parts are available yet. You should call Apple to see if they can make an exception for you.

I returned my iMac a few weeks back due to yellow border around the screen. The rest of the panel was pretty uniform but as I work on white backgrounds often having a yellowing smudge all around the edge of the screen wasn't going to work.

Did you buy your iMac from an official Apple Store or from a third party reseller?

I was hoping to see some pictures or something so we could see what you're talking about.
I go black and a white full screen and it's very uniform. No light bleed, no tinting.
Did you buy your iMac from the official Apple Store or from a reseller like Coolblue?
I bought mine from Coolblue and returned 2 of them and actually I should return my present one too cause they all have yellow tint issue. Terribke!
I got in contact with Apple online and they stated they had NEVER had any complaint avout yellow tint issues on any of their products and I was the first to address this kind of issue...

There's no way of telling Mastercard / your bank to rise that limit? When I've had this kind of problems I've always been able to solve them. Or maybe you could use the chat in the Apple store and tell them your problem, you might be able to use a transference or make two separate payments.
Even if Mastercard won't work with you... Apple sells gift cards online in denominations of up to $2000.

https://www.apple.com/shop/gift-cards

Just buy one for $2000, then apply it at purchase and pay the difference at checkout using your Mastercard.

I will never buy official products from Apple from anywhere but Apple.nl/.com
Except for maybe earbuds, and so far, from the 7 times I did that, 3 were counterfits.
And I guess the iPhone through Tmobile, but if it was up to me, i'd pay it outright from their official site. I just can't afford to buy it outright.

Just received iMac (2017, 1TB, 580). I guess I need to exchange this. Any thought?

Did you get it from the official Apple Store? I returned 2 like these and doubt to return a third. Open Safari in full screen mode (white background) and look if there are yellow tints/ spots...

Just got mine and no yellow at all, bit of light bleed bottom right and top left not too bad.

Can manipulate the light bleed by applying slight twist pressure in those corners.
