I got in contact with Apple online and they stated they had NEVER had any complaint avout yellow tint issues on any of their products and I was the first to address this kind of issue...

The 27" LCD panels the iMac use have had yellow tint issues since the first one rolled off the assembly line almost a decade ago based on reports from users. Every time Apple updates the iMac (2009 / 2011 / 2012 / 2013 / 2015 / 2017) the forum will soon have a thread with people noting it. People also reported it with the 27" Cinema and Thunderbolt Displays.

If LG hasn't been able to fix it in a decade, I assume they never will. I've been fortunate that none of mine have been noticeable unless I go out off my way to look for it by putting my display into a background color and brightness level I would never use (it seems to usually be in the lower right-hand corner) so I've never bothered to have Apple try and fix it because I was worried I'd end up with something worse. And nobody I have sold my iMacs on to has come back to complain about it, so I can only assume they don't notice it, either.

If anyone wants to have a heart attack. If I was to buy a Colour accurate 4k 10 bit Eizo 31" screen with inbuilt calibrator today here in New Zealand. It would cost me $10,000 New Zealand Dollars ($7363.30 USD).

If I spec out right now the top spec 27 inch 5k iMac it comes to with full specs selected it costs $9000 New Zealand Dollars ($6627.26 USD)

When I say fully specced iMac I am meaning

  • 4.2GHz quad-core 7th-generation Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz)
  • 64GB of 2400MHz DDR4
  • 2TB SSD
  • Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB of video memory
  • Magic Mouse 2
  • Magic Keyboard - English

I received my new iMac 2017 27 inch a week ago.
I have had 4 iMacs so far and all of them had yellow tint problems, especially visible when I worked with Mail, Safari and iTunes since they have a white background and since I always work in the full screen mode.
Some suffered more from it than others.

I really hoped that technology had evolved and that I would not have this problem again with my new iMac...

My God, was I dissapointed when I saw the screen using Safari in full screen mode!
It had a very yellow tint all around the screen border and a very visible yellow tint in some other areas!
I also tested the backlight bleeding and that was terrible too!

I didn't buy this iMac from the official online store (Mastercard has a limit of 2500 euro and it's the only way you can pay, or I have to drive 2 x 100 km to the only Apple Store in Belgium to buy two gift cards...).
I took contact with the Apple Store and they said that when you buy from the official store you will never have these problems... which is not true cause my previous iMac came from Apple Store and had also yellow tint...

Anyway, I returned my iMac and got a refund (online shop).
Problem now is that I'm afraid to buy another one and get the same problems...
Buying from the Apple Store is too difficult (see previous text), buying from the same online shop is a possibility but I'm afraid I might have to return it a second time and bying it from an Official Retail Store (in my hometown) is not really an option neither because you can't return the computer for a refund (the guy told me that in that case they will try to put in a new screen..).

Honestly, all of my Apple products have had some kind of yellow tint..I have/had iPhone, iPad and iMac and all of them had it. In most cases I learned to live with it, but this time not.

Really dissapionted

That's why I whole heartedly support the mini. Choose your own screen. Too bad it's outdated.

Can anybody offer an opinion on how the latest 2017 iMac screen compares to those from a few years ago, particularly the mid-2014 MacBook Pro 15", mostly concerning contrast and black levels?

I only ask because sometimes I when watching video content I can't see dark scenes very well.
Upping the brightness seems to wash out other colours and makes the rest of the OS too bright, etc.

Also, does anyone know if the 5k iMac still uses the TCON and two display ports to drive the high resolution or is it no longer 'jerry rigged'?

i think since the new one has 500nits, at full brightness the bleed will be more obvious than the imacs from the past
in rest it is a nicer display

Screen looks amazingly accurate with little to no bleed. I've had 2011, 2013, 2015 iMacs personally and for businesses I worked at. I'd say thus far the 2017 have had the best screens with no noticeable bleed, image retention, ghosting or glitches, compared to the 2013 and 2015. Spec-wise these are on par with the 2011 iMac configurations best CPU and BTO options.

I'll say it again, glad I went back to the All in one. no messing around with 3rd party displays that are hit or miss and take away from the streamlined experienced. Also Never noticed really any display issues with the 2012-205 MacBook Pro retinas

Well it sounds like you shouldn't buy anymore apple products.
The one thing I don't understand is why you would keep buying apple products when all of the ones you buy have a problem according to you.

Not a bad question ;)

I really appreciate reading the opinions on the yellow tint problems here. Is it just me or has the problem abated a little bit with the new iteration of the iMacs since there are not so many people complaining online compared to 2015 or 2009?

It looks like this problem hasn't been resolved. I've been trying everything from adjusting the iMac, speaking to Apple support, to getting nonsense answers from Apple community. It's like no one has heard of this before but here it is and appears to have been going on for years.

Yellow/hazy tint across the entire screen most noticeable on a white page like Safari. Not only is it a concern for photo editing but just looking at it has been driving me nuts. I have an NEC LED hooked up as well and it's as white as can be (it had other issues which is why I finally broke down to get the new iMac to replace my Mac Mini)

I tried everything from all the settings in Display: calibration, night shift, profiles, etc. Even tried to calibrate with Spyder. Increasing brightness just increases the tint.

Reading through this thread it appears the only solution is replacing it? Fortunately I just received mine and have over a week left in the return policy but does a replacement fix it? I had to custom order because the local Apple store doesn't sell them with SSDs...

Appreciate the thread, was beginning to question my own eyesight.

If the yellow tint issue is uniform across the entire screen (not local to certain areas), then it should be as easy as using the macOS color sync calibration to reset the white point. I myself did it with my regular iMac 5k 2017, the factory default was set at about D65 which I found to be too yellow, and I punched it up a bit to around D70 which is much more white to my eyes, especially when compared to other devices. The calibration app now defaults itself to "simple mode", to enable the detailed "expert mode" you need to hold alt key while clicking the "Calibrate..." button in system preferences>display>color.

Thanks for the reply, Chancha. I have played with that a bit in normal mode. It makes a difference but maybe now I'm not sure what "perfect" white should be... I'm using a Mac keyboard. Whenever someone says Alt key I have found it can be either the Option or Command keys depending on what I am adjusting. What does expert mode look like?

Thanks!
Steve

Edit: I found it! Thanks again!

I've a late 2015 27-inch 5k iMac and just noticed a faint reddish tint around the edges. It is ever so slight. I wonder if this is normal? I never noticed it before, because I rarely use a white background.
