I'm a newbie here on this forum. ...Sorry about that. :)
But, ... only 64MB video memory and no build to order option for 128 ...

In my opinion, ...sad! ...very sad.

What's the opinion out there?

dili

I think thats its major flaw...
If its processer gets a major upgrade (G4 - G5)
Why shouldn't its graphics card???
At least 128mb VRam, no?
Thats the imac g5s big disappointing feature...

The iMac is still MUCH bigger than a PowerBook in every dimension. More than triple the volume. Shrink that down and cooling IS a problem. Plus portables can't waste as much power on fans.

I was about to say te same thing. Who wants to carry a 18 lb, 2 inch thick Powermac?? :D

I personally think that Apple may be looking to intro a tablet like PowerBook which would be COOL! Mkae it like the convertible Tablet PC.

Everyone is complaining about the graphics card

But I think this is a deliberate move from Apple.. one they always do.

If the graphics card was good enough, I bet a lot of prosumers would choose the consumer-line instead of the pro-line of products. Now Apple wouldn't want that, would they?

F.U.G.L.Y you ain't got no alibi, you FUGLY

I'm sorry but, what the hell is that!?

Yeah i'll probably buy one, only cos its a cheaper G5, but make no mistake about it, its the ugliest thing i've ever seen. Apple's need to always make something different, isn't always the best solution. The previous iMac was great looking, and well, if it ain't broke......

i will admit it doesn't look as bad with the keyboard in front of it. But seriously, what is that!???

Ordinary!

The design is boring and looks dated with the wide border. They removed the computer and added a clumpsy screen.

Why would I buy this and not a notebook? Ok, I can see the point for wall mouting - except the cables will be a mess then

I'll say discontinue desktops except where it makes sense, that is for high performance, upgradable computers for professionel use.

Everyone remember... Even if this thing can be mounted on a wall.... You can't mount it flat on a wall because that wuold mean you couldn't use the ports on the back of the computer.

(Which means it is only viable to mount flat on a wall if you have airport, bluetooth, and no need for firewire access)

.... or power ...

"flat-mounting" to a wall isn't necessary. Just mounting to a wall is nice to get it up off the desk and out of the "spill zone" ... In "put away" mode it'd hang a little over an inch from the wall itself, both due to the wall mount arm and the need to keep cords from being tweaked.

LOVE IT!

I Think it's a smart design. It is obviously aimed at the pc user who bought an ipod and may want to buy a new computer that looks like and would be easier to connect to their ipod.

I had a girlfriend in 9th grade who holds that accolade

Design - 1st impression is "a little bland", but I have no doubt the simplicity and elegance will grow on me, especially as soon as I see one at the Apple Store.

Memory - not enough, but who cares? Whoever wants more will buy it cheaper elsewhere, anyway.

Bus speed - Go ahead and be peeved that it is 3:1 not 2:1. It is still a MASSSIVE improvement over G4 bus.

Graphics card - A dissappointment to us geeks to be sure, but still a perfectly acceptable card for the target audience.

Price - Well done, Apple!

Overall - This bodes well for getting the [dual core!] G5 in a portable sometime in the next 6-9 months. Oh, announced at MWSF, but I'm referring to actual ship date:D

Buying a G5 iMac? - Nope. I can't imagine buying a desktop again, regardless of the footprint [or lack thereof]. Laptops rule, at least until Apple makes a desktop that can be controlled by a detachable/touch screen/iTablet/telepathic/thingie.... :) :)

are you sure?

does anyone know where to the get the VESA mount that apple use in their promos?

Sure doesn't look like it's VESA mount compliant to me. Comparing the back of the iMac with the back of the cinema display, it seems to lack the necessary piece to accept the adapter. This is all based on the Apple supplied images, so who knows, but you'd think they'd publicize this very cool feature if it was an option.

Mostly, I'd like it to be an option so that I can stick it on a cool articulated arm in my office.

Sooo... if the 20" iMac has the same screen as the 20" ACD(same 1680x1050 resolution), does that mean its got about $600 worth of computer???? So who is getting ripped off, the ACD buyers, the iMac buyers, or the G5 tower buyers? Looks like I got screwed w/my 20" ACD...

And again with the weak graphics. Otherwise the hardware seems pretty decent. Nice 2GB ram limit.

And if Apple broke that $600 computer out by itself, they'd sell MILLIONS. At $600 it blows the doors off of Windows boxes. Heck, I'd buy 2 immediately, one for the home theater and one for the bedroom.

I think it doesn't look that bad, but I really like the look of my ACD which is basically the same. No vertical adjustment though. Here's an idea, how about a modular computer back, that hooks onto the ACD's...add what monitor you want...or none at all.

Three step process:

1. Buy your iMac
2. Place iMac directly behind your glorious 23" display
3. Plug iMac video-out into Cinema Display.

I'm kinda satisfied. I like the design, but I just wished there was a 2.0 GHz model and the system bus was a little faster. Before I buy this new G5 iMac, I would like to see baby in person.

Hahahahahahah!!! That is the lamest god damn thing I have ever seen. Why does Apple still insist on putting that pathetic Nvidia 5200 in EVERYTHING? That is such a god awful video card its not even funny. This machine would have done so much better with even the Radeon 9700 Mobility.

This thing couldn't run Doom3 if its very life depended on it. Sure, I suppose it might work at 640x480 with all the eye candy turned off but at that one point one might as well play the original Doom.

Apple has once again saddled what could have been a great machine with horribly inadequate components. I suppose I shouldn't expect anything less because 90% of people think the thing is beautiful and will order one anyway.

I think this is going to be a big success for apple. they are targeting all of those ipod users now and it looks NOTHING like the emac..how many of you have actually seen one..they are HUGE and REALLY heavy...

So is this officially the end of the "Waaaaahhhh!!! You can't fit a G5 in a thin, quiet, consumer system!! Too hot!! Too noisy!!" brigade? You know who you are :)

Personally I'd wait a few months for the first lot of complaints before I shout that from the rooftops. Firstly, I think that it lacks the personality of the pervious form factors, secondly it does look like a thin eMac, but most of all I'd be worried about it getting warm and noisy.

Have you actually heard one yet?

Still, lets hope not.

Oh, yeah, and they really need a sub-999 one if they're gonna get those iPod buyers and convert them...

The design is the next step. When it comes down to it, the display is what you are working with. The form is being true to itself. Why have a base unit, if you don' need it? It just consumes space. This is a major evolutionary step for the iMac an simplicity is its hallmark.

With a wireless keyboard and mouse, most users will only have o deal with the power cable. Look at your desktop right now and imagine how cool that would be.

My only hope is that the GPU is upgradeable, that would make it truly awesome.

Cool design.

Only bad thing I can see is that the 17" still appears to have the low quality TFT that the old iMac had ie. viewing angles 120 H / 90 V.

My 2nd Mac is an iMac 17", but the screen has an aweful viewing angle compared to my Sharp LCD on my powermac with 170 H / 170 V viewing angles.

120 H / 90V is very old when it comes to viewing angles on TFTs now.

well...it is important isn't it? The main reason why i didn't get an iBook. About the design, I'm sure they they can do better than that.

I'm just...........umm.......sad.

The iMac offers the smallest footprint ever, but you can make that zero with an optional VESA mount. Hang it from the wall or swing it around on your desk.

Did anyone notice that the new design only has a 4X superdrive. I had to really dig but I found it. They were really careful not to brag about that seeing the new G5 is 8X.
