I love the design, love how they are promoting games on the screens. Love everything about it. Can't wait to see one in person, wish I could get one but I promised myself that the powerbook was the next to be upgraded.

that said, I do have some thoughts...

1. i would rather have seen the speakers as external units... but I think they double as vents... but still, maybe once they get a cooler G5 they could move to external speakers.

2. left thinking, where do we go next with the design? thinner, wider, 30" screen?? Can apple get anymore minimal then this?

3. i will miss the last model's design, i have the 20" man i love that computer.

Seeing the new iMac made me smile this morning, not sure why... :D

The foot is detachable for wall mounting–or any other mounting that's VESA.

I was looking for exactly this specification on apple's website, but couldn't find it. It's mentioned only in a sidebar on the "graphics" part. I would think this would be a major thing you could hilight. Your computer mounted on the wall, with only the power cord really required, which you could possibly run directly into the wall (depends on configuration of power cord). This is a whole new paradigm, almost as big a shift as CRT->LCD in terms of freeing up desk space. I'm not sure why the chose not to completely highlight this. AFAIK, this is not available with any other computer system.

Images from the show floor

MacGeneration.com has a bunch of imaghes of the iMac from the show floor, showing people useing the machines at the Expo:

As to my opinions (not that anyone cares), like many I think more RAM and a better graphics card would be nice. And I didn't liek the design when I first looked at it, but already it has grown on me, so much so that I can't imagine the iMac any other way! It is simple, minimalistic, and beautiful, and you can't argue with the price point.

My only gripe...

Where is the 23" and 30" iMac g5 options? :p

j/k I like the looks and the price is right. When tiger is released, and people buying now will probably get a price break on the upgrade, they will have one of the fastest pc's per square inch on the planet.

Sorry for replying here, but I can't seem to post a new message. I've gone through the activation and subscribing business, but I'm still getting the "Unable to Post New" message.
Help!!!

Not sure exactly what you mean, but some sections of the forum don't allow members to post new threads, whereas others, like Current Events, etc., do. In fact, most do. Just not these.

The iPod Thing...

I don't know if anyone else noticed but apple compared the imac G5 to that of the ipod. This would tell me that the design was influenced incredibaly by the design of the ipod. It is sleek and thin. 2 inches is Very thin. I say we all stop complaining and wait to see it with our own eyes. I'm sure it looks better in person! If not I'll wait for the G5 PB... ;)

This also brings some great deals for the G4 iMac's.

Once again...new iMac....STUNNING!

New iMac

For those of you clamoring for a "headless" upgradeable iMac, the answer already exists in the form of a refurb 1.6/1.8 Ghz tower. New technology, as upgradeable as a Mac gets, and relatively cheap. If Apple were to extend the bottom end of its tower line I think this would satisfy the user that wants iMac prices with good performance and ugprade potential.

Remember, the iMac will always be prosumer machine that represents a compromise between asthetics and performance. It is simply impossible to match tower performance in a laptop sized enclosure. But you can come reasonably close. As I said before, the iMac's only real stumble is the somewhat obsolete (for gamers) video card. I don't think this kills the machine's viablility to 80% of its customers though, and the situation can be quickly remedied by the adoption of newer mobility cards in a rev.B model.

I like the new iMac, it is a way cool machine, but I'm still saving for a dual G5. My Rev C's problems with its high vltage board has turned me away from all-in-ones for the moment.

Ordered a 20" with 1GB of RAM and the 250GB HDD. Replacing my PB 12" with it, the wife gets that and the almost 3 year old gets the 800MHz iMac to play her Playhouse Disney.com on .

HEHE... I was wondering the same. I don't think they have any other options for design other then going larger in screen size. I bet we see either a 23 or 30" in the near future.

So where is the missing mac?

Shouldn't we be able to buy a $600 headless G5 mac?
Then Apple would actually have something to contend with the low end PCs out there.

The new iMac is nice. Love the design. Definitely want one.
I'm disappointed as usual though with Apples price.

swing low

I'm gonna miss being able to put the screen low. I always found it the most comfortable viewing position. Then up and admire the design when i'm not working.

Why couldn't they just G5 the swing arm...no technical replies please :)

Yeah, and the iPod didn't receive the greatest welcome when it was introduced. Take a look: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/apples-new-thing-ipod.500/[/URL

The only thing I can think about now why the iPod still has that ugly chromed out back. Other than for cost reasons, I have no idea why they don't have an ipod to match the look of the new iMac; white all over. It looks ridiculous on the Apple splashpage with the new iMac in profile with the iPod.

The new iMac G5 is very close to what I was expecting and by far the closest thing to the perfect PC for my needs.
I would have liked to see more RAM and a video card that supports TV-in along with a new piece of the iLife package for PVR type control. With that it would have been a no-brainer for most bedrooms.
Not a lot not to like.
As for the big white space below the screen that people want rid of or filled with click wheels etc. At least it gives enough space for post-it notes!

Guys, calm down... Here are the educator discount pics

i wonder if they have done their homework (apple) and found out that the majority of iMac users don't want to upgrade their video cards, and producing iMacs that allow just that actually lowers the bottom line profit by leting users to keep their "old" iMac longer.

DOOM 3 mid-range, low-end, and vintage graphics

Also doesn't make for good publicity when websites list the 5200 Ultra *128MB* in their low-end list:
http://tech-report.com/etc/2004q3/doom3-midlow/index.x?pg=1

The only card that only has 64MB is the Radeon 9000 Pro...

We need 64MB on the low-end models (eMac, iBook), 128MB in the consumer desktops and pro laptops (iMac, PowerBook) and 256MB in the pro desktops (PowerMac).

No need to cripple a 1300$US machine with a 25$ GPU and save another 25$ by crippling it even more with less RAM than what the industry uses (which is also what games use as their target).

No wonder Doom3 was delayed because "Macs suck" (quote from the lead programmer of Doom3, probably about their GPUs/VRAM).

I just want to know this...Where are the rest of the product introductions? The iMac was it? (Although a very big IT)
