i was going to make comments but it looks like shard already did a damn good job of shutting some people up. i think they are an excellent machine and they will sell very well. its not to offen that apple lowers the price and makes it better at the same time. its usually one or the other. can't wait to see it in person, although i can pretty much look at the current displays and get a good idea.

So? Who DOESN'T upgrade RAM in any base system except the newbies?

Well, some people don't actually need to upgrade from the base amount of RAM. I prefer it when Apple does it this way because it keeps the initial costs down, still gives the users the flexibility to upgrade (in this case to 2 GB), and doesn't try to sell people more of a system than they need. I suppose then there could always be the option of downgrading some components, but I find Apple's method acceptable.

I agree that most people end up upgrading their RAM anyway, but look at it this way. If Apple offered 512 standard instead of 256, guess what - you'd be paying more for the machine, and do you know how much of a premium Apple puts on RAM? I would prefer to get the bare minimum of RAM with my machine from Apple and purchase additional RAM at a significantly lower price from a 3rd party than be forced to buy more RAM for Apple which I know they will be charging me their premium on. Saving money is not a bad thing!

It seems to me that Apple is really trying to market this to be kind of like a tablet computer that is extremely easy to move and use around the house but they have done this without sacrificing much power or screen size.
Where does it say this?

A tablet computer this big and heavy?!?!?! Give me a break!

HEY ALL. I JUST SWITCHED AND TODAY BOUGHT A 20" iMAC G5. 3-4 WEEKS SHIPPING  BUT AS A STUDENT, I WANTED TO CLARIFY SOMETHING ABOUT THE SOFTWARE. DO ALL MACS COME INSTALLED WITH WORD PROCESSING AND ALL THAT GOOD STUFF? I SAW AN OPTION FOR AN OSX STUDENT EDITION, BUT I DIDN'T HAVE THE MOOLAH. CAN I STILL DO THAT ESSENTIAL STUDENT STUFF RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX?

thanks

You don't need Microsoft Word to be a Student. Surely Microsoft doesn't define what it is to be a student. Even the most basic, stock Mac comes with a text editor. You'll be fine. There are also Open Source (Free or mostly free from the UNIX community) that do all the necessary functions Microsoft Office does. They're downloadable. As for out of the box... I used TextEdit to compose this, you'll find it in your Applications folder once your machine arrives. Also if you're interested in a Mac "office" solution check out AppleWorks, it's less than $100 and is often updated for free.

Note about shipping dates everyone: If a cargo container ship with 200,000 Power Supplies goes down in the pacific on their way from Taiwan to San Diego to be assembled for they lovely new G5 iMacs... Who will you blame? Mitsubishi heavy industries for not spending money on ship engine component upgrades or Apple's second in command for not being Steve? 3 weeks later, your 30" display finally arrives. Do you morn the loss of time? Or the souls lost at sea? Hypothetical souls, but souls none the less.

Thanks iJon, I try and do my part. And that's an excellent point about the price as well - I'm quite pleasantly surprised that Apple has been able to offer this great machine at such an affordable price. I would have thought they would at least keep the price the same as the previous G4 models, if not raise them slightly due to the G5 chips.

There are 2 USB ports on the back of the keyboard, giving you 5. So no need for your sarcastic implications of being a Pro user... :p ;)

but the keyboard takes one of those USB 2.0 ports
so i have 4 2 USB 2 and 2 usb 1.1
and when i want to copy the pictures from the digital camera over there i would be running into some USB shuffeling ;)

and talk about a 'clean desktop' when you have to connect to the internet through your keyboard -> USB ISDN modem sounds amusing to me ;)

4 usb ports simply aren't enough in these days for a family computer...especially if the computer should be 'a digital hub'

edit: sure it's a nice computer etc. and i would like to have one it offers better value than before ... _but_ the problems i had with the iMac G4 are stil lthere in the new model: ports,ram,graphics-card

And the games released a year or two from now wouldn’t require you to upgrade your PC’s video card? Your PC video card from 2 years ago can handle Doom 3 just fine? Trying to stay on the leading edge of games is a losing battle as far as hardware components go, you’ll always be upgrading and needing more, more, more.

Don't have a PC but my point is ...the graphics sucks. Big time.

Why do you require a faster SuperDrive? So you can burn a CD in 2 minutes instead of 4 minutes? The average consumer (which is what the iMac is targeted towards) does not perform mass disc burning to make a 8x SuperDrive a significant necessity over a 4x SuperDrive. If you’re a Power user, get a PowerMac…

So, I'll have to be a POWER user now to burn a CD in 2min. ...nice way of thinking my friend. Tell that to all PC users. ...they'll love it.

No innovation? Please. Okay, you design a system which can house a G5 in that type of enclosure. How many other computers have you seen with this design? No, definitely no innovation here, Apple doesn’t know the meaning of the word… And just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's crap - many people would call your precious cube crap as well, so to each his own...

C'mon. They put it in a box (read: behind the LCD). That's all!! ...where's the design??? I mean ...the iMac G4 was new in design. ...this is like mentioned somewhere before ...an eMac with the behind cut off ...and a G5 instead. No more. No Less.

It never surprises me how some people are never happy and always need to complain. Yep, play the waiting game dili, you’ll always be waiting for the next best thing and you’ll never be satisfied.

I was satisfeid and didn't complain at all with the purchase of my 8500, 9600, G3 233 Beige, iMac Snowy & Dual 533 G4 ...happy as a frech-born.
But I will not be a happy-fella with this piece of plastic. ... :) Not at all.

So be it.

Sorry, but like I said before. The PowerMac is to expensive! ...and believe me!! ...you CAN get a PC for $2000, with lcd display and capable for playing games!! (the big ones), email, etc. ...be-lieve me.

I never said you couldn't get one for under $2,000. I said you couldn't get a equal or better equipped major name brand PC for the same amount of money or less when you also add in either a 17" or 20" major name brand widescreen LCD. Find one that costs the same or less with the same specs as the $1,299 iMac that includes a 17" widescreen LCD display for example. I haven't been able to find one yet myself...

BTW, if the G5 chip can now fit into an enclosure this small, why are we still stuck with these montrous towers on the power user end?

sounds like you don't have any pci cards you need to install in your mac. i do. a few of them. that's why i got the g5 dual 2.5... pci cards. not unusual in audio/video work.

If you bought the Radeon 9700 two years ago (yes, it's around 2 years old now, IIRC), you should be able to run Doom III with decent quality and speed.

USB hubs are cheap. ;)

I'll be nearby you in 2 days takao, I'm backpacking through Eastern Europe and I fly into Vienna for starters before I head into the Czech Republic! Well, I guess Innsbruck is far west of Vienna (opposite ends of the country pretty much, right?), but still, a lot closer than I am to ya right now!

To all of you kiddies out there bitching about a 4x SuperDrive...

When you design and manufacture a faster slot loading drive, give Apple a call. I am sure they will put one in. But for now, it doesn't even exist.

Hickman
That's right. I forgot about the new law where computers were required to have slot-loading drives.

bro, do yourself a favor. you seem to be stressing to much about the new iMacs. if you dont like it, DONT BUY IT, DONT THINK ABOUT IT.

Well yeah I agree with you there. But Apple is certainly not a no-name clone either so that's not really a fair comparison. :)

I appreciate that, but a lot of the people who are making these video card/gaming complaints are the hardcore gamers who need to play the latest and greatest with full features turned on, yadda yadda, and that card, although more than acceptable, would not cut it - after all, the FX5200 is a decent card, yet it obviously is "complete crap" if you ask some of the people here. They're a tough crowd to please...

Even when it comes to UT2004 and Halo though, there are significant improvements with this new iMac over the old one, as can be seen here. Again though, some people are never happy... I agree with your point though.
