Eww. Please tell me that's sarcasm.
1) Pug-Fugly.
2) You could do that yourself with an iBook and creative use of 3rd party accessories.
3) Laptops are not meant to fly.

I want the iMac "Playmate Edition" with really big, round, voluptuous... speakers.

I am not saying that this should be the end all, but a starting point..,..

I think all whining aside this is a great update - particularly if you are a struggling musician like myself who doesn't have the $ for the full blown g5 tower.

I got an emac 1ghz at xmas and have been looking either for a g5 pbook or something reasonable to bridge the gap betw/n my old sawtooth tower and the dual 2.0/2.5 towers that are out now.

Speaking as someone who paid $2500 way back in the day for my pmac7500 I find it hilarious about all the grumbling over features apple has left on out on this model, or the new emac etc. If you're in the market to buy a mac then that's what you're going to do, if you're not go buy a wintel machine. Buy what you like, you can get the job done with either - it's just personal preference.

PCI slots would be nice, but I've recently made the move to mostly firewire/usb interfaces for audio work so that doesn't phase me too much.

The real limitation on this machine for me (audio wise) is the 2 gb max of ram. I'm sure space has something to do with that. 4gb would have been perfect, but with that sleek space saving some features have to be sacrificed. Price point is a definite plus I think

Dang.... And wow!

Geeeez... I think we might have set a record on this post... How long has it been up? And the posts are in the 900's? That's crazy! As for the iMac, I think it's a REALLY good idea. Who buys an iMac for gaming? Seriously people, spend $500 and build a PC that'll whoop ass. For EVERYTHING else, though, and even a bit of casual gaming, this computer is perfect. I'm actually planning on buying one. What games won't this run smoothly? Doom 3 when it finally ports? I'm not complaining. Plus it looks suh-WEET!! :D

The PM now shipping thread is the longest, but it is old. This thread is less than a day old and almost 1000 posts 40 pages!!

Probably a stupid question but does the mini-vga output allow you to use a second screen or is it just a clone of the main screen?

My G5 has double outputs and I love having side by side monitors.

Thanks guys!
It allows only mirroring. However, a new version of the "old iMac" monitor-spanning hack should probably be out right...about...now.

I was disappointed that they didn't use the G5 Aluminum look. it would also have been a great opportunity to update the keyboard and mouse.

CAREFUL ON THAT VESA MOUNT ...

Glorious. And I think that seals the deal for me.

Now if I could just hide the laptop I'm typing on from my wife... :D

*****************************

I was a little disappointed to find , in their website , that the 17" iMac is already pushing the weight limit of that arm and
the 20" iMac ( MY iMac :( ) tips the scales at 25.2 lbs and is way over the 18 lb. arm's limit.

Is this a special "for-iMac" version that handles the 25.2 lbs ???

That company makes "HD" ( heavy duty ) arms too, but very ugly and les articulated.

Their computer carts with arms look like they might chase you around the yard a few times before attempting to reproduce with you.

Trying desperately to get used to this,

Gotta keep the "i" and "Power" lines visually distinct....

Of course, $3 buys you aluminum foil and contact cement.... ;)

I think this is somewhat of a step back from the previous iMac. It's as if Apple failed at designing a Tablet Mac and then salvaged the plans to make this. There's no advantage to it being only 2 inches thick unless you have extremely limited desktop space and although the stand comes off, it's not self powered and the screen can't be used for data entry. Making things smaller is an advantage to mobility... The port placement also isn't the best since they're on the back which makes them less accessible (and it can't be mounted flush against a wall). Also, there's no Firewire 800 or gigabit LAN and the screens are somewhat sub-par (120/90 viewing angle with 200 cd/m brightness for the 17"). It does have some good selling points though such as the specs/price ratio but it completely lacks the innovation and quality that I expect from Apple. The design isn't much better than a Commodore 64...

I think it looks A LOT like the "20th Anniversary Edition" Mac from the early 90s.

Um... if you mean that the design isn't much more novel than the C64's was when it was introduced, then I might agree. Otherwise... bwa ha ha ha ha! You can't be serious!

Market desperately needs cheap headless consumer Mac. Only Apple won't see it. I don't believe that this machine is going to perform any better on market than the "lamp" did.
Could come in January. for under a grand. at $799-$999. Pc users (and some mac users) who already have nice monitors will buy it like sliced bread. stats could mirror the 2 17" sans display, hopefully by that time Apple will offer a BTO 128MB or 256MB video upgrade option (hugely important to many) and preferably ATI 9600 or better.

OK

I got to page 16 and couldn't TAKE ANY MORE!!!

I can't believe that over half the posts repeat the fact that the graphics card is sh*t!!

So what.

Get a F****N' LIFE!!

End of September I'm gonna get one of these babies - 20", 1GB Ram, Bluetooth all the way and a 250GB HD. :)

And for all you people still crying out for a 'headless' Mac, forget it. Don't you yet understand that the very definition of what the Mac has always been is an all-in-one easy to set up and use consumer model.

If you want a machine that you can upgrade then buy a Power Mac, or if you're too tight - go back to PC World. TBH - I don't think the Mac market would miss a bunch of whiners who probably have no intention of actually spending more than $999 on a computer.

Head on it looks just like the emac. I hate the emac look but for some reason I like this new imac. I would never own one but I could see my mom with one.

Incase anyone needed further evidence that the G4 iMac was outdated.
I believed they used the baseline 1GHZ imac with the 32 MEgabyte Gforce 4 MX.

From iMac specs page:

Typical viewing angle:

* 17-inch models
o 120° horizontal
o 90° vertical

Aren't these specs a bit crap for a 17" monitor?
I hope that is a misprint, that is worst than a lot of no names $299 rebated 17" displays. the 20" is good at 170x170. heck the 17 emac crt might not be that bad, what is the angle for crt's or is there one.
if the spec is right, expect more 20" orders, especially for those that will hang this and look for angles. on the imac G4 viewing angle was not as important, cause you could always adjust the screen perfectly.

look thatwendingo your trying to twist what you actually meant when you said that they wont fit a g5 in a imac enclosure... this proves they can fit g5 into tight enclosures this is as tight if not tighter than the half dome.

just confess you were WRONG and start babbling about how they wont ever fit a g5 in a laptop
That was well said, Thanks.

Sooo... if the 20" iMac has the same screen as the 20" ACD(same 1680x1050 resolution), does that mean its got about $600 worth of computer???? So who is getting ripped off, the ACD buyers, the iMac buyers, or the G5 tower buyers? Looks like I got screwed w/my 20" ACD...

And again with the weak graphics. Otherwise the hardware seems pretty decent. Nice 2GB ram limit.

And if Apple broke that $600 computer out by itself, they'd sell MILLIONS. At $600 it blows the doors off of Windows boxes. Heck, I'd buy 2 immediately, one for the home theater and one for the bedroom.

I think it doesn't look that bad, but I really like the look of my ACD which is basically the same. No vertical adjustment though. Here's an idea, how about a modular computer back, that hooks onto the ACD's...add what monitor you want...or none at all.
I think it's the Old 25ms 20" screen available for $999 while supplies last.

I have the old iMac.

Way to me PowerMac users and powergame players trying to tell the rest of us our wants. The iMac is simple and sleek. My first impression upon seeing was wow! I hope they show on TV advertisement the ad with iPOD and iMac. This what we need to hook PC users. Sleek, sleek, sleek design just like the iPOD. Everyone will be able to see the same lines.

Make sure you order the adapter, it doesn't ship with it.

Personally, it's ugly and plain, a G4 1.5 powerbook has more power (graphics and system) and GF5200 ??? WTF is all I have to say. Now they even skimp on accessories. I wouldn't be surprised if they stop shipping keyboards and power cables with their computers next. Why the heck does everything have to be an option. Also I have no use for a DVD recorder, the upper models do not give you an option for a combo drive. Looks like I'm not buying one.
I was hoping they would use the powerbook graphic system, probably too expensive, you cant get cheaper than 5200 with 64MBs, can you?
