Apple knows what they are doing. If you're a power user you don't want to be stuck with a 24" monitor anyway. You want the mac mini or the studio and a 27" or 32" monitor. For the average web browsing/email crowd the M1 is plenty.
As an iMac power user since 2016 and MBP user before that, I keep up-to-date on product news and I must say when the subject of buying a 27" or 32" monitor comes up there is NEVER a good clear choice, the monitor market seems like the wild west with every option having considerable cons. I have yet to see agreement on what is a great and fairly priced option comparable to Apple's self-contained iMac monitor.

"Hello"?
I'd rather say "goodbye!, in this case.

It's very weird to see the iMac being neglected, however the decision has to be backed up by sales.
Perhaps people are less interested in iMacs as they were, let's say, 10 years ago.
Apple prioritizing headless Macs does seems like an inexplicable shift from where they were a few years ago, where it was basically the laptop + iMac show and they were contemplating having a high-end iMac replace the Mac Pro entirely. Not sure if this is about goosing ASP by pushing people to buy a Studio Display, or just that Apple feels like higher-end customers are better served with a modular machine.

While it's obviously nicest for customers if the models are always getting continually updated so there are fewer "bad" times to buy one, I don't think most people really care. Something like the weird entry-level model and >$1K pricing are probably bigger issues than the chip in it.

As long as you don't prioritize 5K, there's no shortage of much cheaper and almost-as-nice options. There finally seems to be some movement on competing 5K monitors this year as well.

What would make for a good PR move of Apple is to keep to current MSRP and Mac chips but double RAM & SSD quantity.

Dream Macs 2023

MBP 16"

- M2 Pro
- 12-Core CPU
- 19-Core GPU
- 32GB RAM LPDDR5
- 1TB SSD ~7.5GB/s
- $2499
- 96W

iMac 27" replacement with 27" 5K, 30" 5.5K or 32" 6K display

- M2 Pro
- 10-Core CPU
- 16-Core GPU
- 32GB RAM LPDDR5
- 1TB SSD ~7.5GB/s
- $2599
- ~100W

That iMac would be great - but the iMac 27" replacement you cite would cost $3,999 instead of $2,599. Remember, you are getting a screen, keyboard and trackpad with this package!

It’s becoming really hard to know what mac to buy. They should update everything at once. The way they are going you have such a mess of overlapping features.

The external display marketplace is waiting to see what pricing the 27" 5K Samsung Viewfinty s9 turns out to be. Mini-LED displays like the Porsche design for a 27" 4K is $1800. Sure there are lots of cheaper 4K displays out there but quality/brightness is lacking aka Wild West. ;)

Absolutely ok to skip M generation for such specific and "low end consumer" product. Would be great if they alternate with larger versions, or just add them next time.
And please please add another input, ideally with some KVM switch or even PiP.

If you factor the 2020 27" iMac costing $1799, you'll have an heck of an experience paying the same amount for the Studio Display and then staring at it with a blank look on your face because there is no computer attached.
The awkward thing is that it already has a computer inside, with ram and ssd. So adding erthernet, wifi - and there it is.

iMac was a great way to physically showcase the efficiency of Apple Silicon. I would be interested though how much % of Mac sales are desktops this day and age.

Many keep saying 24in. is too small, but for those with limited desk space it’s more than enough. Also for those, like myself, who have been using a 21.5 iMac stepping up to 24 will be a welcome upgrade.

I could fit a 27in. Studio Display on my desk, but it would start getting crowded.

The M1 was praised for its power and ability when it was released, except for those few who needed more. For everyone else the M1 was a huge gain. It still is. The M1, for many people, made 8GB RAM respectable and more than sufficient.

That said, above a certain price point, 8GB RAM and 256GB storage is a joke. Only bottom end machines should be 256 and everything else at least 512. That all three tiers of the current iMac start with 8GB RAM and 256 storage is absurd (okay, last tier starts with 512). It should be:

Tier 1 = 8 RAM and 512 SSD
Tier 2 = 16 RAM and 1TB SSD
Tier 3 = 32 RAM and 2TB SSD (or an M1 Max with 32 RAM and 1TB storage*)

*This is essentially a Mac Studio in an iMac chassis. I’d by that in a heartbeat.

This is just my personal ideas of iMac🙂

One can only hope that Apple launches a new iMac this year.

If they do, maybe they using the M2 Pro chip and perhaps an even faster CPU like Max or Ultra, like the Mac Mini Studio M1.
Or they releases the M3 this fall.

And the size. They went from 21,5 to 24" so maybe, if they release a new iMac, they perhaps go up to 30"?
A 5K resolution or slightly above will give a decent dpi on a 30" screen.

And add some more colors😊
And if they do, please let the customers decide if they want the white chin or a black chin.
Imo I don't like the white chin. I think it's a distraction.
They can at least release a Space Grey or Midnight Blue version with black chin, and have the other colors with the white chin.
Just my personal ideas🙂

The iMac needs to die.

It is simply too unsustainable. Throwing away perfectly functioning, great performing, still good looking displays just because the "computer bits" are no longer keeping up. It makes no sense. Apple surely knows this. Green my Apple, Apple.

Display + Mac mini is the way to go at this level.

They just need to churn out a modular design in which you can put together your Apple desktop of choice + display sustained by a swiveling arm.
It would also be a nice revival of the best Apple desktop design ever, a.k.a. the iMac G4.

why do people keep saying that? It will NOT. You will have 2 additional cables and 1 extra box sitting on your desk. Apple is all about design right? So give us the imac clean set up.
If you need to plug in usb cables into the back it doesn’t look clean. Imagine how clean it would look if the display didn’t have any cables, because it had a built in battery and wireless video to the tiny Mac Nano that was connected to all the usb devices. Can’t get a cleaner look than no wires on the desk. And when display needs to be charged, just one thunderbolt cable to charge and get full thunderbolt speed and brightness.

All good then!

Still not a moment of regret over the purchase of Mac Studio and ASD.
Super happy with it.
In the long run it's a lot better imho with separate Mac's and Display's.

No. But when you're in the market for an iMac, you shouldn't have to choose between a chip that's two years old and waiting 12 months for an update.
If you’re going to buy a product that’s in declining product segment then you have to take what is on the market or you don’t buy, simple. For this machine’s intended market, the latest most advance chip is not required and more than meets their needs. It’s standard product cycle practice for any business to invest less in products with declining sales.
