Part numbers aren't the same but it looks like the one you linked would work too. Checking on the specs I could see they appear the same even though it's again another part number from Crucial.

Yes that one will work fine, I received my 27 inch yesterday and added those two memory modules into the open slots and left the 2 original apple ones in as well. About my mac shows 24gb at 1600mhz. :)
I appreciate the confirmation thanks, the bad thing? Out of stock:(

Thanks BSoares.

I can confirm that. Got my iMac delivered yesterday, installed 16GB, and all 24GB running 1600MHz perfectly. :)

iMac 27" late 2012 RAM : CL11 vs CL10 vs CL9

Hi everyone ,

I am planing to remove the iMac memory 8GB ( 2x4GB) and replace with the 32GB (4x8 GB) ram . Can you please let me know which one is best for my new imac 27" late 2012 :

Crucial for Mac CT3327442
16GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz Non-ECC SODIMM CL11

Corsair Vengeance CMXS16GX3M2A1600C10
16GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz Non-ECC SODIMM CL10

Kingston HyperX KHX16S9P1K2/16
16GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz Non-ECC SODIMM CL9

Crucial guaranties the compatibility with the new iMac , but I don't want to go with that slow CL 11

Corsair vengeance CL10 is also compatible with the iMac as seen on recent youtube review , it works but not sure will be any diferences in term of performance between the CL11 and CL10

Kingston HyperX havent seen any review yet so not sure if having any issues with compatibility. Also interested to know that if the CL9 ram even work with the new iMac 27"

Ppl saying that go with the lowest CL9 for best performance but I am not sure if my iMac take full benefit or it just make the ram running @ CL11 only .

CL11 vs CL10 vs CL9

Any help is much appreciated .

Thanks heaps

Corsair vengeance 32GB installed and works with no issues for me at 1600mhz and not sure the CL # (not at home).

I have 32GB of the Corsair Vengeance CL10 , works great, as long as you dont mix it with ram with a different CL.

Take a look at the specifications for a moment...

CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 - 16GB (2x8GB) Vengeance Performance Memory Kit DDR3 1600MHz CL10

The key part is the last bit (CL10). It means that the RAM has a Column Address Strobe (CAS) latency of 10 (CAS latency is also referred to as CL).
...

When comparing memory sticks that are all clocked at the same MHz, the one with the lowest CL is the best, and the most expensive.

Seb I got some rather cheap Komputer Bay 1600 RAM at CL10. (Their 1333 RAM works great in the 2011 iMac - 4 sticks of 8 GB).

I put in all 4 sticks, removed the Apple RAM, and started to see Kernel Panics (running at 1600). Running the Apple Hardware Test I got a memory error. I then tested two sticks at a time, which all passed. However when I put all 4 in, it failed.

Next I mixed the Apple RAM, which in the 27" I can confirm is CL11 rated at 1600. Two 8GB sticks from KB mixed with 2 4GB Apple sticks worked, but only at 1333.

Looking at the specs for Apple's RAM and that from OWC and Crucial for the 2012 iMacs, all spec CL11. Accordingly, I have 4 8GB PC1600 CL11 sticks coming tomorrow and I will try them out.

In theory they should all work, unless there's a bad module. Crossing fingers!

Does Crucial run any type of promos or sales?

Not a lot. But if you use ebates.com you can get a link for 5% off and 6% cash back so you make part of the money back. That's a way to save a little.

Also, make sure you pick the part number CT2KIT102464BF160B which is usually cheaper than the one they show for iMac but same specs. They raised the price now with demand so it's $81.99 and I paid $75.99 first week of December.

It's weird it is a few dollars cheaper than the one when you use the tool to find your RAM. So it is this one correct and it would work with apples stock RAM running 1600mhz?

BTW I'm not sure if it matters but I've got a base model 27"

Yes, it works. That's the model I bought myself and now I have 24GB running at 1600MHz, no problems. I have the high end iMac but it makes no difference. I also have the same kit on a 2012 Mac Mini, also working with no issues.

Thanks BSoares, sorry for asking so many questions. It's just I already bought and returned the Corsair Vengeance and with all the different model numbers didnt want to make the same mistake twice.

Oh yea as far as ebates.com is it really legit...supposedly new members can get a free Target, Macy's, or Khols gift card? And on top of that some cashback on this Crucial.com order? Hey I'm down for that free is always good. :p

Could it be due to different CAS timings? The Corsair is CL10 whilst basic factory RAM is CL11?

EDIT: Looks like that suggestion has already been figured out. Also for the love of all things sacred NEVER buy Komputerbay RAM...you're just asking for trouble if you do.

I just installed 32GB of Kingston HyperX RAM DDR3 1600 CL9 1.5v, in my 2012 27" iMac. It's been running 100% stable, even after stress testing it with Compressor 4 compressing several 1080P videos. So far there has been no noticeable problems.

Ram shows up as 1600 MHz DDR3 in about this mac.

Here is my computer stats;
2012 27" iMac - 3.4 GHz i7
768GB Apple SSD
680MX 2GB

Signed up to confirm that 16GB of CL11 1600Mhz ram will work at 1600Mhz when installed with the stock 8GB CL11 RAM.

I bought the Crucial CT2C8G3S160M 16GB Kit. I left the stock ram in slots 1/3 and installed the Crucial kit in Slot 2/4. My system information report shows the following:

Thanks for the results. Clearly just worth getting the cheapest CAS 11 RAM you can find.

Yeah, ebates has paid me what was due so I say it's legit. And I referred a friend too and after he made a purchase I got and extra $25 :)

Just installed 4 x 8 Gb Kingston KTA-MB1600/8G DDR3 RAM (originally designed for rMBP, but also works in iMac) in my 3.4GHz i7 late 2012 MBP. They sell for around 40 euros / 8 Gb (approx $53).
It runs without problems at 1600 MHz.

My geekbench score @ 32 bit was 13,126 (link)

Nice ordered the RAM without ebates before I saw this its cool though still got 5% off

C10 is your Problem!

Looks like others have replied to this, but just wanted to give you further evidence that it CAN work, you CAN buy the 16 GB from Apple and 16GB from Amazon and get 32GB that runs at 1600MHZ.

You just have to be really careful about the "speed" of the memory (Geez I have not worried about that since the days when I was buying individual chips and pushing them on the boards in the PC - Ah the good old days).

Anyways, I was one of those nuts that ordered my iMAC 27" on Nov 30 and did not want to pay Apple $360 for another 16GB of memory!

So when I ordered it, I just got the 16GB (2x8) from Apple (yes, I know I could have just got 2x4, but I did not want to get something and try to sell it which I am not good at doing).

I almost ordered that CL10 stuff because it looked right, but I saw a warning about the 2012 iMACs and how you were going to be screwed if you did that! Thank you to whomever made that review with that warning! I instead got the CL11 memory here:

http://amzn.com/B008TYIEVQ

I installed it (remember to use every other slot in that neat little carrier) and then when I turned it on, got the 1600 speed and 32GB and no worries.

Yes, I could have bought all the same memory and it would work as well, just cant mix the CL10 and CL11 memory, the iMAC, like it's owner, is quite picky!
