Really good update on the iMac this today. Really happy to see 512MB RAM across the board. And that's really something considering the iMac is a consumer level computer.

I'm very excited!!!

I have just ordered a 20'' iMac!!!

This update had everything I wanted (big hd, airport, bluetooth, better graphics and DVD burner- poor specs of the last two put me off the first iMac G5) and i have had to add nothing extra! And it costs £100 less that it did yesterday.

I am one happy bunny (unlike my credit card)

This iMac is replacing my 5 year old purple 400Mz G3 iMac DV (I shall be very sad to see her go- we've been thru some times together!) so this new one shall seem rather fast, I think.

The only thing I shall miss is the purple colour!!! But hay, its time to move on!!!!

Where did he purchase it from? He might be entitled to a least a refund on the price difference.

Apple will refund the $300 in this case. Our deal was a tad different. I just called the Apple store after purchasing a 20" iMac, the only reason doing so was the 10% off "coupon" we recieved at the event.

What we have are two choices:

1. Get the $110 price difference between our discounted model and the new price.

or

2. Pay $260 to get the new model, 2/3 of which is the restocking fee.

If you're looking to buy a Mac without a bundled monitor, then the iMac/eMac lines aren't for you. Look at the PowerMac or Mac mini lines instead and then plug one of those into your existing monitor. You said you've gone through 3 computers in the 6 years that you've had your monitor, so that's a new computer on average every 2 years. I imagine the Mac mini and low-end Power Mac would both last for at least two years (unless you're wanting to use these for gaming, but you say you don't care about the speed of the CPU, so that's probably not the case).

For some people, the integrated monitory/computer is nice though. People buying their first computer, or a 2nd computer may not have a monitor around and/or may not want to drop a large sum on a high end LCD. The iMac is also a great space-saver making it fairly appropriate for dorm life.

Wow, it took 5 pages to get to the first complaint about the video card! ;)

My primary goal was not to complain video card. Almost everyone here just think that Radeon 9600 is about two or three times faster than 5200ultra. But it is not. Of course the gap between 5200ultra and 9600 depends on software. Nvidia has always been exremely strong in opengl. For example Doom3 and Quake3 runs usually great in nVidia. But then Halo and WOW for example should run better with Ati.

9600 is clearly better and I would change my 5200 ultra card instantly to that. Well maybe I go and pickup a new midplane with 2GHz G5 and 9600 installed :)

Hi, I am looking to trade in my PC and go Mac, but looking at the specs of both the old and the new iMac has me worried.

I use my PC as a HDTV player, I was going to buy a mac mini but it isn't powerful enough to play HDTV at 1080i.

So now i'm looking at the iMac but it looks like it only outputs 1024x768 for my projector, when I need to output at 1280x720. Somebody please tell me I'm reading it wrong, or theres a work around!

Okay, so now where is my mac mini update? :p

Yeah...

A nicely-equipped Mini (1.42GHz, 1GB, combodrive, bluetooth/airport, keyboard) is $981.

For $443 more, you get can get the iMac, which gives you faster modern processor, twice the HD, great graphics card, faster memory, Bluetooth 2.0, Tiger pre-installed, etc.

Oh, and a 17-inch LCD thrown in. Not a bad upgrade.

Would like to see a $899 G5 "PowerMini" -- the $1299 iMac sans display and keyboard -- as the current Mini doesn't look so attractive next to the iMac.

metal encased imacs?

Has anyone watched the "exclusive" Tiger online seminar? The demonstrator in the video is using what looks like an iMac G5 that is encased in a brushed metal case (looks like PBook case material), instead of the white case. The USB port is also in a different place to the real iMac G5. I thought that this metal imac might be the next model, by evidently not. Anyone have any clues about this?

The new iMac specs look completely awesome. :D It turned out to be an even better update than I expected, in fact. No rumor had mentioned the fact that AirPort Extreme would now come standard on the iMac, and it now does.

On the 17-inch 1.8GHz model, for the same price as before ($1299) we're now getting: 200MHz bump, double RAM, double HD, double graphics card RAM + better card, BT2 standard, AirPort Extreme standard, faster frontside bus, Tiger and iLife '05.... about $400-500 worth of upgrades for free! :D

This iMac appears to run Doom 3 faster than my 10 month old Dual 1.8Ghz G5 that I paid more for. And it comes with a built-in LCD. This is truly ridiculous. I will trade-in my dual 1.8ghz G5 for the newest iMac.

You are joking right.
:)
If you are not those are the Apple Aluminium Cinema Displays

This is good for those looking to save some room and money and are in the market for a new machine. As for me after owing a power mac i dont think i could go to a hybrid desktop ever again :D

I'm very pleased to see they have finally started shipping 512 Mb RAM as standard as this has to be considered the minimum to see OS X in its full glory. The prices to go to 1GB are much better, $125 extra for 1GB using up both DIMMs and $175 for the memory in one stick, leaving you free to buy the additional elsewhere (if you need it on this level machine).

as of 9:08am EST, I've switched...now the wait for delivery begins...

Out with the old:
Homebuilt Athlon 1100mhz with XP, 256 PC133, 250+160+120+80+30 gigs internal/external, GeForce2/Matrox 3-monitor setup, wires everywhere

In with the new:
iMac G5 2.0ghz + bluetooth and airtunes, finally no wires....

Good choice!! Seems like this is just about perfect timing for my family as well. I mean seems like....because Toronto's AppleStore opens in about 18 days; not enough time for me to save up for a purchase, 1 month too early. Now this is extremly sweet value especially the video card & APE & BTv2 built in.

2 gripes I've got. 1) I still cannot decide between this 17" 2.0Ghz model iMac G5 or an older Dual 1.8Ghz G5 PowerMac. The later is about $600 Canadian more expensive but 2 cpu's is nice, no BT built in that I can find though in that timeframe. 2nd) I just hope that iSync gets updated to support more Nokia series60 smartphones buy September (as the newly announced n70 - if americanized for 850mhz bandwidth gets FCC approval; its also got BT v2).

Either way no more stalling for me....I'll be a Mac user very VERY shortly!!! ;) :D .

PS Griffindor73 feel like giving that G3 Purple iMac a new home in Canada? Is it 400mhz & with DVD rom? If interested pls keep Canadian pricing & homeage to the Queen in mind, thx.

Uggg. According to the Apple store- they have a 14 day policy where they will give you money back if they discount the item. This was day 15 and they refuse to budge. I will call Apple but I'm not expecting them to help in the situation. I thought it was 30 days with all stores- at least Best Buy is.

US Pricing / Specs last 2 revisions

To see the price and features of the latest iMac and how it compares to previous upgrades, this upgrade represents the best value. No doubt the next upgrade would be an even better value. So for those on the fence about buying an iMac, right now is the best.

Here are the 2 previous revisions.

with this really great upgrade to the iMac and the very weak upgrade to the PM their capabilities begin to mearge -- is this evidence of a big upgrade comming in the PM? --- i know i know the PM was just upgraded -- but still -----
No it doesn't, well not anytime soon at least. My guess is Apple Expo in Paris towards the end of the summer...I bet the Power Mac speed bumps released recently were just released to buy some more time for the dual-core processors which possibly ran over schedule. Don't be surprised if you see a quad +3ghz machine debut in the summer.... ;)

I'm sad...

In January I bought a 20"/1.8Ghz/160GB HDD/512MB RAM/4x Superdrive/5200U/APX/BT package iMac G5 for $2200 w/ .edu discount...

Now I could get a 20"/2.0Ghz/250GB HDD/512MB RAM/8x DL Superdrive/9600/APX & BT built-in iMac G5 for $1890 w/ .edu discount...

I wish you could upgrade iMacs... oh well.

Woha, ordered a 20" with 400 GB HD, Airport eporess and Apple care with edu discount. :D
I'll buy more RAM later, cheaper from somewhere else, I think 1 GB extra will be just fine.
Nice update Apple!

The 9600 is not inherently better than the 5200 Ultra- both are 4-pipeline DX9 cards with core clocks of 325, with 128-bit memory busses. Performance for apps that don't need more than 64 MB graphics RAM should be a wash, more or less.

The saving grace of the 9600 (non Pro, non XT) on the Apple side is that ATi seems to do better with drivers than nVidia, which (at least on the Mac side) negates nVidia's current superiority in OpenGL.

Of course, I see the difference between 32 MB and 64 MB of graphics RAM whenever I use exposé on my revA and revC 12" PowerBooks... I wonder how much smoother 128 MB will work.

The 9600 Pro wasn't particularly a gaming card when it debuted on the Mac platfor 2 years ago, the slower 9600 is no more a gaming card today.
