Dual Display Spanning on an iMac G5?

Does anyone know if there is a legit way to ust the video out on the iMac mini VGA port to drive a second, extended desktop display?? I found a applescript firmware patch at http://macparts.de/ibook/ Is there any other way to do this on an iMac? Will this work with the new ATI card in the Rev.B? If so, this all of a sudden makes this new Rev.B even more appealing. :)

--Oh yea - by the way, does anyone know if this little firmware patch would void an applecare warranty?

The problem is paying $40 a month just for the sake of having an active phone line for faxing... I use my cell for everything else... I wonder, is there a way to get faxes thru a cell phone?
you can get virtual fax #s online. At onebox.com they charge $13/month to receive faxes and voicemails at a virtual #. Shame... it used to be free.

it most certainly does, you're changing apple's firmware in an unsupported fashion. i still strongly recommend it though since it's a foolish limitation to stick on a computer.

as for the support for revision B, these patches seem to have worked straight across the board since video cards in the i line became powerful enough so you shouldn't need any mods...

It used to be $1,499, right??

Now that the 17" 1.8 GHz is $1,299, 512 MB RAM and a G5, I want an iMac more than I want a PowerBook now!!!

I WANT AN iMAC!

Daym, I was ready to buy a mini Friday. I already bought my new Dell 2005FPW. I am thinking about selling the monitor and just buy the 20" iMac. :D Who wants a 2005FPW? :)

Woha, ordered a 20" with 400 GB HD, Airport eporess and Apple care with edu discount. :D
I'll buy more RAM later, cheaper from somewhere else, I think 1 GB extra will be just fine.
Nice update Apple!
To everyone considering getting the new iMac (i'm sure there will be loads of you..I personally think that this is one of the best hardware updates recently). Anyway, remember that the iMac supports dual channel memory so getting the standard 512MB and then adding a 1GB stick later is not optimum.

What about a single 1 Gig, are 2 x512MBs better?

no.

They are the exactly the same prices as the old ones.

The Question..

"Better graphics"
The Imac has better graphics but it seems people are STILL complaining about the PM update. Mind you, its harder to update things, obviously, when its at the TOP of the line... But i really do like this update... waiting out for Ibook but with this update, the ibook will probably not come out till June.

Cheers,
Ini

Does Ati 9600 support Core Image?

I mean it is NOT in the support list on Apple webpage. only 9600xt

Guess, I'm just slow. I also only see the 9600xt listed, not the 9600, as supporting Core Image. Could you direct us to where you found the info..

Tks

wow, i always wonder why people complain when they buy hardware and then apple updates it so soon..i guess now i know..

i bought the middle imac g5 in december, and i still feel like an ass after seeing this update. for the same price, you get a faster processor, bigger hd, more ram, better superdrive, built in AE & BT, and a better video card.

i'm glad apple's keeping up with the times. but i do feel bad for people that bought imacs and emacs at the tiger launch.

met a fellow who bought an ibook 2 weeks before the ibook g4 series. they exchanged it for the g4 model no questions asked.

I wish they'd released this before Tiger. I think Tiger's very cool, but we're (5000+ computer institution) not ready for it yet - we need some applications fixed (eg: Virex) and our infrastructure upgraded to support it (eg: Tiger Server's Update Server). I'm a bit not happy about this, OS-support wise.

Otherwise it's a great hardware upgrade - good to see substantial GPU upgrades and inclusion of dual-layer burners (I expected them to only appear in the PowerMac at first).

Just wish they ran 10.3.x (maybe they do?) so that we could upgrade to 10.4 when we were actually ready. I haven't even put it on my own personal Mac yet...

Think about this: :) You're saying you wish they'd give you Panther instead of Tiger, right? And you also say you could upgrade to Tiger when you were ready. That means you'd be willing to buy Tiger when you want it, right? So why not just buy new computers with Tiger, and buy Panther to put on them now?

In fact, since Panther is now longer for sale on Apple's site, you could probably use currently-owned copies and install it on all the machines without breaking the license terms. How are you supposed to get a ton of Panther CDs/DVDs when they're not for sale, right?

So you're coming out thousands of $ ahead.

Because the new iMac G5 _probably_ doesn't run any version of 10.3.x, which was my actual point. Apple have _probably_ made the new iMac require 10.4 as a minimum; although I won't know for sure until I get an eval unit into the lab to see if I can retro-fit 10.3.9 onto it.

The license/cost is actually not a problem because we have an annual upgrade license which covers all machines. We have license for "the current Mac operating system", at any given point.
Ahh, gotcha'. There's ZERO concern about the iMac being able to run Panther though, lol. Of course it'll run Panther. :) Don't worry. The 1.8 and 2.0 models are the same as the 1.6 and 1.8 were - they just have "more" of what the "old" ones had. Don't kid yourself. All of the current Macs will run any version of OS X.

How are the displays on the new iMacs? Are they the same as the old ones?
As far as we know, yeah. I'm sure people will be getting theirs soon and reporting on that.

Powerbook G4 has 9600 mobility and it does support everything you need

I can't believe people are so happy with this update. The new superdrive is nice and the update to 512MB was way way overdue, but apple has essentially not upgraded the video card at all. They added another 64MB to a graphics core that performs pretty much the same as a 5200 Ultra (i.e. completely worthless for games). It's very strange to me that Apple isn't pouncing on this window of opportunity they have while their brandname is redhot. If they would have stuck a decent 8pipe card in these imacs, they could have lured a ton of people over. I know I would be tempted.
I'm already a mac user, I use FCP for a living, but I'll never completely switch from PC until Apple stops jerking people around and puts decent video cards in their consumer machines. I'd love a 20" imac that I could come home and play a few games on. You can't complain about the mac mini video card, but the imac is a $1500 machine. Apple is simply ripping us off.

Lots of apologists are going to come out and say 'its ok for casual gaming'.. well , it really isn't. If by casual gaming you mean playing games that are 5 years old, or playing modern games at around 15fps, then I guess you're right. the vanilla radeon 9600 core is over 2 years old at this point, why use it? the imac is the consumer line, consumers like to play games. Here are some benchmarks showing what a pathetic card this is- http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/index.html

Keep in mind the card in the imac is a plain 9600, not a 9600 pro or 9600xt. Also, these are pc benchmarks, the card will perform even worse on a mac due to the poor porting done to bring games over.

Apple will refund the $300 in this case. Our deal was a tad different. I just called the Apple store after purchasing a 20" iMac, the only reason doing so was the 10% off "coupon" we recieved at the event.

What we have are two choices:

1. Get the $110 price difference between our discounted model and the new price.

or

2. Pay $260 to get the new model, 2/3 of which is the restocking fee.

With all the extras you're getting, I think I'd pay the $260. Unless, of course, you can live without BT, APX, better GPU, faster CPU, bigger HDD, Double-layer SuperDrive, etc.

You didn't mention the doubled HDs, Bluetooth 2.0 standard, AirPort Extreme standard, and 200MHz CPU bump. People are happy with the update because it's a great update.

I hear you on the graphics card. It's not fabulous. The iMac is not a gaming machine though, nor are Macs designed to be Playstations. The reason people are happy about the iMac update is because of the numerous upgrades (about $400-500 worth) for free (since it still costs $1299-same as the old model).

Edit: By the way, here's my feeling, and I've always had this feeling: If you want to play games, get a PC, or get a gaming console. They're *designed* for games, they'll perform better when playing games, and they're much cheaper. Don't buy an iMac to be a Playstation though. ;)
