Actually, very few Apple stores have even gotten the 20" ones in stock to begin with. The 17"s have been around since Thursday at least.

That's pretty funny about the salesperson pushing the old ones on you so hard.

My friend just bought one yesterday and they had plenty of the 17" versions in stock. No 20" versions but my friend did not want that anyway. But they had lots of the 17's there out on the floor in their boxes. Maybe my area is different as they haven't really sold many yet. They no longer have any of the old versions (A) and well i guess those go back to Apple to sell at a discount???? No idea.

We did some tests last night and noticed his iMac runs the same as mine (1.6ghz) doing the same tasks. Fan sounds the same to me. I guess the real test will have to be with iDVD or Photoshop... as far as we can both tell they perform the same with normal apps.

I would not expect much of a speed increase with the new machines, at least processor wise. Of course the improved video (setting aside people's whining about it), DL burner and increased hard drive size are the real boosts in performance.

As per the comments on shortage of bluetooth keyboards and mice, the Apple store is showing them as shipping the same day (that is if you simply buy them alone). If they were having a shortage, I would suspect that that would show up there too. I suspect there is simply a backlog of getting the computers set up. I believe that they have to boot the machines with a USB keyboard first so as to set up the bluetooth. This simply takes time. So, if everybody oders the bluetooth, including me, there will probably be a backlog for the process of setting it up. Kinda makes me wish that I simply ordered it seperate. Really would not have been much more, but I would have got it much sooner. Oh well.

I used to have an xbox and when I wanted to play xbox live I had to put the ethernet cable from my pc to the back of the xbox, then turn the digi box off and restart - They vice-a-versa to be able to surf the net...

Is that as simple as it would be for the iMac?

Most probably, since i heard a lot of Xbox Live users saying they had to do that back when i was a regular Live-er :)

Waiting for my iMac

Got my 20-incher yesterday. Runs great so far.

Did you buy yours at a store or from apple online? I ordered mine from apple on Thursday, and today my order status notes that my computer was replaced with a new product. What can be newer than a rev b iMac?

Yeah, I just got the replaced with new status after it being in the sent to manufacturer status for a couple of days. What the heck is up with that? It is all the same, or at least it appears to be so.

I just called and they said it is the exact same unit, and I still have the same ship date. I noticed that it has gone from being labeled a
IMAC 20/2.0/SD CTO
to
IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/SD CTO

Strange.

Look what happend.

They replaced my iMac ( IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/SD CTO) today, I ordered 5/6. I check my update and it say's "Replaced with new product" which is IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/512/250/SD/BT/AP-USA. Why did they replace it? What is the difference between "SD CTO" and "AP-USA"?

IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/SD CTO

Vs.

IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/512/250/SD/BT/AP-USA

I just rechecked my order status. My original order said "No Modem Accessory Kit" and my "replaced with new product" order says "Accessory Kit with Modem."

Got my 20" imac today, ordered last Wednesday. So far all runs great, it's quiet, and it's quite large! Order status never changed, just took a few days for the thing to get from Apple in Elk Grove to FedEx in Rancho Cordova (all in Sacramento area).

Mine has been re-"sent to manufacturing" as of Wednesday evening. It's supposed to be shipped by Friday. I have a feeling that date will be changed soon.

Aaah! I want my new computer!

Mine shipped yesterday (5/10). It originated in San Jose and left Sacramento about 10:00am PST today. So far nothing new since then. I noticed that both Apple and FedEx are showing 5/14/05 as the delivery date. This of course is Saturday. I didn't think they (FedEx) delivers ground on the weekend.

Can anyone confirm?

yup...all i hear is the fan from the fireware hd i keep all my music and pics on. oh, since i can't stand a silent Mac, i used Xsounds to install the old OS9 'platinum' sound set. much quieter than my old Wallstreet Powerbook - and i do notice, as my desk is about 18 inches from where my head is when sleeping.

No offense, but if you don't know for sure, you really shouldn't say anything. You're wrong when you say all of the current Macs will run any version of X. I have a 19 month old PowerBook that won't run anything earlier than 10.2.7, an iBook that requires 10.3. It wouldn't suprise me at all if Apple forced it so the new iMacs can't boot anything older than 10.4

I'm in a similar boat as deejemon. I had to convince my boss to order all the eMacs at once instead of stages because I didn't want to get the last 50-100 a few months down the line and have them running only Tiger when everything else I have runs Panther.
No offense taken. ;)

Just for the record....

And it's official. *Sticks chest out - proud of himself* LOL

Just spoke to THREE (3) people at Apple and they said,

"Yes, the new iMac G5 1.8 and 2.0GHz processor models will run Panther as well as Tiger."

Now, I have 3 people from Apple who back me up. Hah!

For those wondering about h264 playback....I watched the batman begins trailer on my new 17" imac in present mode. I didnt see any dropped frames or slow playback.....it was actually pretty awesome!!!

So my order has now been bumped to a send by May 20, from send by May 12. None too pleased. However, for those who bought it through the Apple education store, there is $100 rebate. I guess that takes some of the sting out of having to wait another week.

My ship date was just changed from May 13 to May 23. I'm not going to get my computer until after Memorial Day!
