1) One of the bajillion threads on the subject shows the guts of the macbook and why getting a FW plug in would have been difficult (i.e., drop something else). The iMac doesn't have that limited space.

2) The rumor suggests only speedbumps, which means no case redesign. Why would they drop a FW port just on a speed bump?

3) That said, if they introduce new ones w/o FW, I'm jumping on a refurb immediately.

I agree that the next iMacs may only involve a minor speed bump, but the writing is on the wall. FW is slowly being phased out in favor of USB, on the consumer Macs. I'm sure Apple would love to sell more MP's and the more powerful these recent iMacs have become, the less need one has for the MP's, unless you do heavy graphics or CPU intensive work.

Possible new iMac?

How about time machine?

If there is no firewire, what happens to TimeMachine? The people with firewire drives for time machine won't be able to upgrade. I bought a 500 meg firewire drive solely for time machine backup, where does that leave me if a new system comes out? Easy.. keep current system till it dies.

I guess you'll need to get a USB drive or case.

Perhaps will see the new aluminum style get carried over to the iMacs? Along with LED backlit displays and pretty much all the new stuff in the Macbook line.

I'll probably be picking one up for home when the new ones are released. The current models are good but for $1299 I'd like to have abit more power and grunt under the hood. :)

Didn't they just carry the imac style over to the macbook/pro's?

I am really stuck on this. Not that I am looking at an iMac (I'm waiting for the Mini to be updated  ) but it is really a difficult one to predict. Notebooks are smaller, have different constraints compared to a desktop. My initial thoughts were that they would drop it off the lower end 20" models (as someone else has pointed out) and keep it on the 24". But the problem I have with that is that it complicates things. Wouldn't this create problems with the manufacturing? Unless they were to somehow just use a USB port in place of the Firewire???

Any thoughts on this?

The low end imac will have more or less same internals as the new macbook, the 24" will have the same components as the macbook pro. Why? Beacuse it makes it more profitable for apple...

lol, you know, I used to be REALLY against a mid-range tower, but the more I think about it the more I could really dig getting one. You know, quad-core, better video card options, and the ability to use whatever screen I want (I would get an Apple display though, they are fantastic). Do I think they will release a mid-tower? Nah.

they obviously will, it's what will sell them those ugly new ACD's I expect the mac mini to be updated into a mid range tower, all ACD's to be beaten with the ugly stick and the mac pro to be dropped outright as it will be the only computer in the line up that is not using (the same) laptop components.

:eek::eek::eek: I hope i'm wrong

I could see them offering an Edu only 17" iMac with no firewire.
or adding a 30" to the range and have FW only on the two bigger ones.

But if they just keep the two current sizes then FW800 will stay on both.

USB isn't going to replace FW till at least USB3 which ain't here yet.

Certainly, the MacBook price increasing means the difference between the top end and lower end Pro is now not that far and justifiable for those that do want Firewire - Apple's idea that people who do really need/want it will get the more expensive machine, even though for me it isn't so much the cost as it is size, 13.3" is about my limit.

The border looks to wide, the back looks nice though and then it would match the apple displays. :)

they would need to put black keys on the keyboard too

The iMac was just redesigned last year. It was the basis for all of the products we are seeing now, and was the first to employ the black boarder and tapered design. Nothing new is coming for the iMac yet.

As for the mockup, the power button on the front looks horrible, and there are far too few ports. This is a desktop, and will not be losing anything besides maybe the firewire 400 port.

A Black keyboard with a glass trackpad attachment does seem very plausible now.

I personally don't think that either the 20" or the 24" iMac will lose firewire unless there is a redesign, which I don't think will happen as they are designing the notebooks to look like the iMac.
It doesn't make sense to take firewire away if you are not redesigning. Which is probably why the white macbook still has firewire.
On the other hand if they redesign it, then I'd expect the 20" not to have it, and the 24" to only have firewire 800. But I'm really not expecting a redesign.

If they do drop FW on the next iMac update, I'll consider myself extremely lucky I chose to upgrade at the last revision! But I don't think Apple are quite that stupid. The MB and MBP are just about close enough in price that anyone who can't live without FW (i.e. video editors) will reluctantly shell out the extra cash for the MBP. That's what I'll end up doing anyway and I'm sure that was Apple's real motive. But an iMac without FW would be a complete disaster. I wouldn't seriously consider upgrading to an Apple Pro desktop to gain a FW port, so I would have to live without a desktop altogether or give serious thought to going back to a PC. No, I don't think they'll risk losing all those iMac consumers who regularly use FW at this stage of the game.

+1 on that
