I believe they're talking about an rMini 2 running an A8 vs. an Air 2 running a new, higher resolution like @3x running an A8X.

The additional speculation is why use an X variant when they didn't for the previous gen running the A7 - sort of suggesting the Air 2 might need more GPU processing power than just a slightly higher clocked A8 (supporting the idea of a higher res device).

A higher resolution makes sense. What the guy I quoted was saying is that the two will still have the same pixels but the Air will have a higher resolution, which is oxymoronic.

Except for the fact that if you have a case on your device, as many do, it means you have to:

1. Lift the cover
2. Unlock the iPad
3. Swipe up from the bottom
4. Select the mute button
5. Close the cover

As opposed to using 1 simple toggle switch.

And the pseudo-solution Apple have implemented to hold the down volume button is not very satisfactory because a) it takes longer, b) if you have a cover then you are left wondering if it has actually muted it (so you end up having to lift the cover to check, and c) if you want to lower the volume from loud to quiet without muting it, it means you can't just hold the down volume button - you have to press it repeatedly to reach the desired volume.

Just terrible implementation.

There will be a mute button on the new iPad, just relax brah. Lolz

You were saying...

No mute switch in new iPads

What I find unbelievable is that you & the fifteen people that upvoted you are somehow blissfully unaware that MacRumors has all but debunked this. The missing lock/mute button & hole in that spot is because it's a pilot hole, NOT because they're leaving it out & coincidentally putting yet another mic in that exact spot. Lol, why would that allow it to be thinner anyways??
Also... is there an advantage to that hardware switch since iOS 7 introduced the slide up control for it?

You were saying...

You changed tabs 10 times in a 30 second video. Stay on one tab for a few minutes and then switch. It will reload.

The pages where fully loaded, so the time I stay on that is pointless...
You came up with this non sense about timing just because you know I'm not going to shoot a ten minutes video to prove you wrong again.
I demonstrated that with a few heavy loaded webpages my iPad doesn't refresh. Period.
If I try hard, like owning more high res pages, it surely will, like any other tablet (even my nexus).

----------

How is it acceptable to only cache 4 tabs? That's a problem with Safari, not a feature to brag about.

It's about reasonable expectations. Four quite complex tabs are fine in my concept of tablet use.
If I need something more complex I'd switch to my notebook.

----------

I run into the issue when I have a couple of tabs open, one of which is a shopping cart. I then open my eWallet and try to copy/paste my card number. I can't count how many times that cart page reloads and I have to re-enter all my address stuff. Gets really tiring.

We all (well, at least those of us who have been around tech for a few years) know that software follows hardware. I.e. Software developers do not write software that can't tun on existing hardware. We won't get richer apps until the hardware exists to run them. Nor will we be able to have two simultaneous windows open (real mulitasking).

But right now I would be happy with just being able to keep 3-4 tabs open without constant reloads. Sigh.......
And above you have a demonstration that you actually can have 3-4 tabs opened without any reload on an iPad air....

You can't prove me wrong. If you stay on one of those tabs for a few minutes, it will reload when you switch. If you do the same when typing, your text will disappear. You switched tabs 10 times in thirty seconds. Nice try, but it proves nothing. They ALL reload tabs. Period. You tried hard to make sure it wouldn't reload. Use it normally and it will, you don't have to try at all.

Don't worry, you and DonnaW aren't the only ones to experience this. For some reason, there are a few people out here in internet land who are a little too overly sensitive about even the most minor of criticisms about their favorite things.

If I don't have any other apps open in the background, I can have about 3-4 tabs up without it constantly having to reload them every time I click on one. But if I'm using anything even remotely heavy, it'll do with just two up. If I'm doing any sort of multitasking, there's no doubt about it, it'll reload everything every time I flip back into Safari.

I said it when the Air came out, and I'm saying it now: the iPad needs more ram. Now that the Air 2 might be getting just that, we should see this problem go away, or at least not be nearly so severe.
Your point is quite different from their.
I agree that there is a limit at about 3-4 tabs, especially with safari (chrome and mercury are better in managing ram). It's not perfect, but it fit my expectation for tablet web browsing.
They are complaining about TWO TABS, which is totally different from my day by day experience (even right now I have three tabs open while I'm typing this).
I demonstrated it with not a video, but four videos over the time, using different websites. I could post others, but every basher here will dismiss those videos nevertheless....

That's just plain false.
And there is no logical explanation in your statement. Once the webpage is fully loaded, it doesn't matter how much time you stay on it: the memory footprint of it doesn't change. There is absolutely no reason to change. A webpage doesn't change its dimension over a few minutes.
I didn't try hard,i just switched the iPad on and take the video with my phone. Period.
I did it several, and I say again several times in the last year.

Then perhaps you have a unique definition of tab reloading that is different than what has been reported by thousands of users. If you keep those 4 tabs open and stay on one tab for a few minutes, and then switch, it will reload. You know it, I know it and everyone who owns an Air knows it. You switched tabs 10 times in 30 seconds. End of story. Logic has nothing to do with it. The tabs reload. Fact.

Thousands? Maybe you mean a bunch of whiners on this forum?
Most of the users are just fully satisfied by their iPad, as usual.
Tabs aren't reloading on my iPad. I'm using mine for two hours now, with 3 tabs open and it doesn't reload. Period.

Yep, thousands. This isn't the only Apple forum. And sorry, I don't believe you. But by all means, keep insisting it doesn't happen.

They aren't thousands. They aren't even hundreds, and there are millions of iPad out there.
The fact you don't believe me is the demonstration of what you are really doing here.
You don't have to believe me, just my video.
It's more than a few minutes now. Isn't that "normal usage"? Page loaded, read and than switched to another. Back to the thread.
Book, no reloads!

Interestingly, with the same 1GB RAM, the Safari tab reloading problem is much more pronounced on the iPad Air than my iPhone 5s and 6 Plus. Probably because the iPad's higher resolution screen (but 2048 x 1536 is not that much more than the iPhone 6 Plus's 2208 x 1242 anyway) and it usually gets full desktop version of websites?

Ok, I admit you were able to make a video that 3 tabs didn't reload. I'm sure you were able to come up with a scenario to prove your point. I don't try to use mine so that it doesn't reload. I just use it as I always do. I've also tried it on every iPad in 4 area Apple stores and I have never found one that doesn't reload. Maybe I should use different websites and play with the number of tabs open until I find a combination that doesn't do it.

You proved that in this example ofyour usage it doesn't reload. I still don't believe that you have never had a tab reload, but I'll give you your just do and admit that you made a video where the tabs didn't reload.

Do you have an Air? Mine has done it since day one with Safari and with Chrome. I tend to use Chrome more than Safari, but I have daily crashes with Chrome, just like Safari. I still haven't updated to iOS 8, I may do so soon. I just want to make sure the bugs are worked out first.

I find it to be the only issue I have with the Air, but it is quite annoying at times. I've had it happen with as few as 2 tabs open. The help forums at Apple.com have loads of complaints about this.

Yeah the video. I have used an iPad Air for nearly a year and I still use it frequently every day so I just need to look at my Air for that. Safari reloading is the only problem with it. Every other thing is perfect. If you think that I'm a naysayer because of this I don't know what can we discuss further.

I didn't anything special. There isn't any "special trick" you can do for that. In my videos the webpages weren't even the same: I randomly changed them.
You asked for a longer staying over the web page, I did even longer that the time I usually need to read a page, and still no tab reloads on my iPad air.
Now what? Do I have to jump on one leg, upside down, screaming loudly "Samsung isdabest " until I experience a reload?
You argument is ridiculous. You basically are keep calling me a liar even if I proved with two videos shooted while we were speaking to prove my point.
And I never said I never had any tab reloads: I just said it's not AN issue affecting my daily usage.
I'm a big fan of the new iPad air 2 Gb of ram, but only because I hope in a multi Windows implementation, not for tabs reloads.

Mine isn't a magic iPad. It's just like your. And I used very common websites like MacRumors and GSMArena for my test.

It is a big issue for me. My tabs reload every time I change. You cherry picked your use for your demos to prove your point, and that's fine. Your first video proved nothing, in your second video you reduced it to 3 tabs and it did not reload. You're in the minority.

I didn't cherry pick anything. Give me another website. I'm waiting.
You were speaking about TWO TABS RELOADS, I proved you wrong with FOUR, but I was "too fast" (what a silly explanation...), then I used THREE, which is more than two, very slowly, ridiculously slowly, still no reloads.
Now what?

I'm in the minority? Last time I checked, Apple sold MILLIONS of iPads last year. How a bunch of whiners compared with millions of satisfied customers put me in minority.
And again yours are just words: where is your video of an iPad reloading with two tabs every time?

----------

Scruff, here with different websites....
Ars technica, Anand.... What else?
http://youtu.be/EQQKZvavZsE

So? I cherry picked them also???

I don't care how many Apple sold. The reloading issue is all over the internet. I never said mine reloaded with two tabs ever time. I said it has done it with as few as two and always with 4 or more. I understand that it impossible for you to say something even slightly critical about Apple. I know you tried hard to prove it with your videos. Fortunately you have found a combination of tabs that works. I haven't and neither have most others.

I don't see you getting much support from your fellow Air owners, just like I don't see it on Apple's own forums or any other tech forum. I'm happy that you have the only Air that doesn't reload. So far I've tested over 30 and everyone of them has done it.

Enjoy. For the life of me I can't understand why Apple put more RAM in the Air 2 since it is totally unnecessary.

I just posted a new video with other well known, websites. Still no reloads and you keep ignoring it, offensively speaking about cherry picking....
I'm not trying hard, it's just simple like using it.
Again, on this kind of websites I just see a lot of whiners, but their number is just ridiculous related with the millions of units sold.
And again, here are my videos, where are yours?

I'm done with it. Everyone who criticizes Apple is a whiner according to you. It's pointless to discuss it with you. Have a good night.

Is that you saying that with more than one tab the iPad reloads or someone else is using your account?

You're done because you have no more arguments and you contradicted yourself.
Still waiting for your link to open on my apparently magic iPad, since the most known tech websites doesn't fit you typical usage...

The whiner isn't someone who criticize Apple. Is someone who did it on a regular basis to put Apple in a bad light and to do that complains about an issue that isn't universally true but affected just some users.

If you open more than one tabs it will reloads is an universal valid statement that is simply not true, and I proved that with at least six well known websites, including this one.

I just went and did some testing. In my case, the problems seems to be Chrome. If I open the same 4 tabs in Chrome and Safari, Chrome reloads when I switch, Safari does not. I use Chrome almost exclusively, and I was being unintentionally narrow minded when talking about tab reloading in general. I should have been more specific and made it clear to all here that I was using Chrome.

The last thing I want to do is pass on wrong information or criticize someone because I was not paying proper attention to which browser was being discussed. I will play around with this more later on and post my experiences.

I apologize to you and the group.

----------

Update: well there goes that theory. Now Safari is reloading 3 tabs every time I switch.

----------

I have 2 tabs open on Safari, espn.go.com and Macrumors. Sometimes I can switch back and forth, sometimes they reload. A few minutes ago, I was switching between 3 tabs with no reloading. The issue is as real as it gets.

I did not clear my browsing history or do a hard reset.

I can't say about chrome, since I installed it but basically never used.
I surely did many tests comparing safari and mercury.
Safari is very poor, while mercury can manage 4 or more tabs definitely better.
Still, while I'm writing this I have opened espn website to check and I have no reloads coming back here.
I don't clear my browser history too. I do an hard reset (switching the iPad off and then charge it switching on again) at least one or twice a week.
Is that the only difference?
I also tend to close every unused app in background (at this time I have only itranslate opened with mercury).
