My dear friend, a 2004 dual processor running 2.5 ghz or 2.7ghz ( and maybe 2.0) is a great G5. A dp 2.5 is almost as powerfull as a late 2006 macbook pro core 2 duo running an intel T7400 at 2.16ghz. The only G5 I'm not interested in are the one running the first gen ibm 970 or the weird single processor 1.6ghz G5 based on an imac. Also, since a 2004 G5 use pci-x slot, you can have a nice selection of really cool hardware at a low price. And in the world of G5, I see the 2004 as a well rounded ppc machine while the quad is kind of too powerfull for the software available.

My little 2 cents from a guy the really love these machine.
I understand - I was talking in terms of 1080p video and play back, youtube etc.. I don’t get how the G5 Quad , 2004 2.7/2.4 DP CAN BE brought to its knees due to internet, and a 2006 Mac Pro can surf the I-net with no issues..

Afaik, java kill ppc mac because theres no support. I can still listen to 1080p youtube and netflix on my xbox 360 (processor is based on the ibm 970mp).

Because the Xeon processor in a 2006 Mac Pro >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>PPC G5. The performance gap is so vast it's not even funny and the 2006 Mac Pro can also run El Capitan, so it has a much more up to date operating system and choice of browser. How you don't get this is a mystery.

Bear also in mind that any PPC can only allocate up to 2GB of RAM per application - that's not a huge amount these days with all the crud that the internet hauls down just to open a news page, for example.

Yeah, people who bought the quad in 2005 kinda got screwed. As cool as PowerPC is, there's a reason they switched to Intel.

My PM G5 2.3 DP effortlessly plays back the 1080i/1080p HDTV MPEG4-AVC recordings from my PVR.
DP dual processor, Quad and 2.3 of the same family are dual core.. so I assume Quad and Dual core can play back 1080i/1080p HDTV with no issues.. However, when trying to watch a simple Youtube video, under 104fox, it doesn't play very well. Leopard webkit is broken and does not work anymore. So, my G5 can't play youtube videos as it did 3 years ago.

Really? Even in 64-bit OS? Any proofs pls..?
Mac OSX PPC is a 32 bit OS. It's not just OSX or PPC, either. The same limitation exists for Windows X86, even if you have the full 4GB installed, any one application is limited to 2GB of RAM, with some workarounds possible.

I stumbled across these two eBay listings:

No affiliation with the seller, just thought a collector here might be interested. Pretty strange to have two of these. They’re nice configs too with 2.3GHz dual core CPUs, 2GB of RAM, and the GeForce 7800GT graphics cards.

Even stranger, I looked at the sellers history and he’s already sold two more, in addition to several new in box Cinema displays. I wonder how that happens.

OK, which one of you clowns quietly won the final bid on one of these units and will show off the unboxing once it arrives? :D

Not really pleasant news... But app can allocate more than 2 Gb (at least - virtual memory).

Time for me to point out the Ars Technica article which explains how 64-bit software running on 64-bit CPUs works on a 32-bit OS X.

(As memory serves, the review for OS X Snow Leopard really dives further into the layers involved.)

Another one... slightly more expensive:

1) LMAO USD$7.5K

2) They clearly know they have an uncommon setup, but

3) They are clearly aiming for a hypothetical wealthy techbro collector from, idk, Silly Valley, who has idle money to blow on trophy pieces which will never get used — like Ferrari owners who never actually use their cars and only keep them for trying out microfibre rags and for “investment value”/exchange-value — not use-value.

4) Even $2,500 for a 2.3 DC set-up, with original box, is steep for what it is. $1,500, on the upper end, is more like it. Realistically, had this been an open bid without minimum or reserve, I could see this hitting $1,200.

5) $7.5K, lmao
