Just hours after pre-orders began, shipping estimates for new iPhone 4S orders placed through Apple's online stores in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the UK have slipped to 1-2 weeks from the initial "by October 14th" estimate. Shipping estimates through Apple remain at October 14th in the United States, while the company is not offering online sales in Japan.

Apple and its carrier partners began pre-orders around midnight Pacific Time, although Apple's and AT&T's sites didn't come up for orders until about 40 minutes after the scheduled launch time. And even after pre-orders came up on Apple's site, users had significant difficulty getting through. Much of the bottleneck appeared to be related to verifying eligibility and plans through AT&T, with the purchasing process repeatedly hanging and resulting in errors for many users.

Apple eventually shut down its iPhone pre-order system for a brief period of time, bringing it back up to issue reservations that would allow users to return later to verify eligibility and select their service plans. Apple has begun notifying users who placed early reservations that they may now return to apple.com to complete their orders, and that they must complete the process by 5:00 PM Pacific Time tomorrow in order maintain their priority order status.

The problems experienced last year are nowhere in sight. You are pretty much able to pre-order one without any difficulties.

IMO, it was a waste to wake up early this morning (2:45 EDT), I couldn't get my order in through Apple due to ATT's FAN premier site being down. That along with the fact that Apple was delayed 43 minutes in opening up the store, I went back to bed. Woke up this morning and got my order in on the Apple site within two minutes. Got a confirmation email and not one of those bogus reserve ones. Never staying up again. :)

Got mine in as soon as the store came up this morning. Was a breeze, had no problems and had it ordered before 9AM (UK).

The sooner I get rid of this old Nokia 3310 the better!

Frustrated...

I woke up at 3 am Eastern to place my order. I gave up at 4:30 am.

Woke up at 7:30 this morning and was able to place the order with delivery set for October 14.
:D
I'm excited to get the phone. Frustrated to lose an hour and a half of sleep last night, though!

Having people reserve and come back was a really good idea. They should have done that from that start.

Must say considering VAT, prices for the UK are pretty much spot on with you guys in the US. Nice to see some similarity at last. 1 to 2 weeks on the UK store as well.

People bought a crap ton of 3GS iPhones over 2 years ago. ATT got slammed last night. I seriously doubt any company could have handled the traffic to be honest.

This afternoon I was able to pre-order 2 phones in our local Orange UK retail store. I'm not 100% sure when we are actually going to get them but I paid a £20 deposit for each device and will receive a call/text when they are available for collection. It might be on the launch day but I'm not hopeful of that simply because Orange likely was taking orders throughout the morning.

Still, fingers crossed. As long as I don't have to queue like a twerp then I'm happy. I can't be doing with that nonsense...

Amazed they still have these problems year after year.

Took me 30 minutes to get my order through (started at 4:10am eastern). I used the Apple Store app on my iPhone. When I finally got it through, I got that 'complete your purchase later' email, went back to sleep, and when I woke up at 7am, I had gotten the email to complete my order.

My sister was able to pre-order without errors from scratch around 7am, and I believe she got the Oct 14 delivery estimate.

So when I tried last night, Apple.com asked me what plan I wanted and everything... and I'm told people that actually got it to go through were told they'd get an email to "finish the process" (just like in the image included with this article).

This morning, when I finally got mine, it didn't ask me about my plan, and it said my order was complete. Got my confirmation email and everything, but no instructions to finish the process later.

Is this normal? I thought I remembered in previous years choosing my plan in iTunes while activating the phone.

Woke up a little late at 3:45am. While slow, the order went in on the AT&T site after a few tries. It will be good to replace my 3GS.

At first i wasn't sure if i was going to get the new iPhone but after hearing about Steve Jobs i had to get it. There will be some real sentimental value on this phone. I just hope that they'll come out with a steve version on Siri.

But anyways, i was able to preorder my phone really quickly. i was in n out with ATT&T

I thought people didn't like the 4S. What happened?

Nothing happened. People are able to easily get into the system, preorder a phone, and then have a ship date of October 14th. I don't know where you're getting your information from. This seems like quite a passive launch.

i gave up and went back to sleep, but i couldn't sleep so i gave up for like 15 minutes. When I came back (around 3:30CT) my order went right through on AT&T

Had the problems mentioned here...woke up at 6:00am and got my orders in.

Unfortunately, the site was glitching and wouldn't let me pick up the AppleCare+ for the 2 phones i was ordering.

Called Apple Support--they tried a few things, but apparently the "+" has no part number yet so they couldn't add it...we thought about cancelling and trying again but they were too worried about upgrade eligibility issues so told me to go to an Apple Retail Store.

Fast forward, I called the ARS and they said they would have the physical retail boxes of AppleCare+ on the 14th and that I could come in and pick two up for the phones I ordered. They said they understood there were some glitches but to not wait much longer than a few days after the "real launch day." I'm hoping to pick up the retail + boxes on Friday. If not, the following Monday perhaps but I really hope sooner than later because I don't want to be out in the cold.

Just wanted to give a headsup to anyone else who is having that problem. I was pretty much freaking about not being able to add the AppleCare+ but wanted to get my order in. Guy I talked to at Apple Retail store was very understanding and helpful. :D...soo good luck to me going in on Friday, lol and not wanting the phone, just the +.

I've been able to load the site and get through to the checkout ( but not pay) all day. So demand must be much lower IMO. I was only trying out of curiosity to see if it was busy.

I don't want one, which is the first time I haven't wanted the latest iphone

Anything that revolves AT&T validation with an Apple purchase in the future, I will sleep and wait until the dust settles.

at least we finally have somewhat inexpensive options for contract-free iPhones in Germany.

the prices seem more reasonable this time around.
