Ugh $649 to upgrade on Sprint. I'm on the complete opposite upgrade cycle as Apple's releases now. By the time I'm eligible for a new 2yr the 4s would have been out for 6 months. Bleh.

so expensive. high end android phone like the galaxy s2 is still 500 off contract. You would be paying $649 AND extending your contract two years. WOW.

Is the iphone 4S now a "World Phone" no matter what plan you go with? I travel internationally alot, and am torn between the ATT and Sprint plans. I like Sprint's unlimited data....but was wondering since it's CDMA will i be able to swap out the sim for a GSM international one when abroad? If not, i will go with ATT since i know its GSM....but i am not sure since i hear that this iphone is universal. Is that true?

Thanks!

Yup which is why it makes zero sense to do so ever in the US. It would be one thing to make me pay $649 for the device and a lower monthly bill but you end up paying the same as if they were subsidizing the entire cost.

My guess: People want the last device that Steve Jobs had a 100% hand in. Just a guess, though.

No. My guess is people are initially disappointed, but they give in to the pressure and buy the latest and greatest anyway.

I had to spend 649 on mine. My wife was due for an upgrade so I saved some money there, but no luck for myself, haha. Just think of it this way, the phones are worth the msrp.

I'd like to know too... CDMA and GSM are such different technologies, it seems very odd to me to combine the two. Just about the only similarity is that they both use radio waves...

EDIT: Come to think of it, since GSM needs a SIM card, and CDMA does not, it seems possible that you could roam onto CDMA networks with an iPhone in GSM mode, but not the other way around. GSM needs a SIM one way or another. Perhaps Verizon could provide a SIM for roaming purposes?

actually what i usually end up doing is buying the iPhone subsidized FULLY whenever I can and then selling on eBay. That way I can maximize profit and since I use Android now, I don't worry about not having the iPhone.

Sim Free

I got my Uk order in about 1000hrs. I used iPhone Apple Store app. Worked like a dream. I feel strangely set free. No more 24 month slavery contracts for me. My delivery date is 14/10/11. Siri sold it for me. I think this is going to be massive

Must say considering VAT, prices for the UK are pretty much spot on with you guys in the US. Nice to see some similarity at last. 1 to 2 weeks on the UK store as well.

Think the unlocked one, eg: the 64gb seems to be about £100 cheaper but not a full world phone (GSM only)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you want to be waiting for the contract-free version next month in the US if you want to be able to swap out the SIM for a local provider.

So I preordered mine through Sprints site around 4 am eastern time. I wake up to find that Sprint charged my CC immediately, I received no confirmation email, and their account/order status section of the site is down. Maybe I should have just stayed with AT&T and waited fair iPhone 5....

Tried ordering last night after midnight (I am on the Pacific time zone) but couldn't get thru. This morning I am able to get thru the ordering process, but it hangs on checking eligibility, saying I need to "cancel other order." Problem is, I can't find any evidence that I was able to place an order previously. After getting thru to Apple and getting handed off to different service advisors I was told to wait for a confirmation email. Kinda frustrating......

OR if you would have waited until November you could have bought unlocked and paid the same and NOT extend your contract. THen you'd be eligible for the 5. Since you extended just now, when the next one comes out you will have to pay full again unless it takes 2 years to come out.

AT&T will unlock your iPhone for world travel AFAIK...

I woke up at 3 am Eastern to place my order. I gave up at 4:30 am.

Woke up at 7:30 this morning and was able to place the order with delivery set for October 14.
:D
I'm excited to get the phone. Frustrated to lose an hour and a half of sleep last night, though!

I did the exact same with the same results. Should have just slept. :)

That is not 100true. It is still carrier locked if you buy a subsidized version. It is only unlocked from apple in November

I thought people didn't like the 4S. What happened?

Read the comments: lots of people with iPhone 3s are updating. Their plan cycle is up and they are stepping up to the latest & greatest available from Apple. Had it been an iPhone 5, they would be doing this too... not because a "5" is necessarily better than a "4s" but just because it was time for an update and this is the latest iPhone available. If Apple had said "no new iPhone this year; we're sticking with the 4 (inside & out)" I suspect many of these same iPhone 3 people would still upgrade anyway to a "4" as it is just a natural outcome of their contracts ending.

I think the griping and "not liking it" is a lot of people with expectations of major design updates every year fueled by the delay by several additional months beyond the "normal" launch time and the usual hype-a-rama machine of rumors. And some of these are "4" owners who don't care about cost inefficiencies and/or extended contract terms from renewing hardware before the normal contract term cycle.

Personally, I think Apple should have called this one a "5" as I suspect a lot of the gripes were attached to an idea of a name (number). Sure, if it was branded the "5" the gripes would have been that it looks exactly the same as a "4". But those needing to brag about owning the latest gadget could have got their "5" instead of having to emphasize the "S" in 4s.

Functionally, it has the latest & greatest guts available from Apple. Yes, the rumored bigger screen was an interesting possibility and a new body shape would help those who need to brag show they have a "5" without having to say they have a "5". But otherwise, Apple took the latest horsepower & guts they have and put them in the same shell with the same-sized screen. The braggers will just have to emphasize the "S" or wait out the next iPhone. For those that care about their spending, maybe the next one will arrive right about the time their 2-year deal on the "4" is about to end, so they can do what these "3" people are doing and not waste extra money for their next upgrade?

That was pretty much how it went for me too - got up in the middle of the night and quickly got stuck by the delayed opening of the sight and then the delays getting through the AT&T checks. It quickly became obvious after getting dumped out halfway through that the AT&T servers where choking under the load and in spite of the lost sleep issue, I was impressed how quickly Apple reorganized and came up with the alternate process to notify by email when your turn to complete a purchase would come up - came in only a couple hours later for me and still says arriving on the 14th.

I'm upgrading from a 3GS, so I missed the ordering chaos for the 4, but I'm rather impressed by how quickly and effectively Apple recovered from the overload, especially when it looks like the main issues where on somebody else's servers.

They must have sold a LOT of phones within the first few hours - probably should have bought some Apple stock along with it... ;)

Pricing

What's with the huge difference between US and Canadian/European pricing?
US $200 to 400.
Canada $650 to 850.
Euro it was high but I've forgotten the numbers
There's only 3% difference between US and Canadian currencies.

Oh, I get it, the US phones are locked.
