Actually there was no reason for Apple to label it 5.0.2 and push it out to everyone. No reason at all.

This issue affects a microscopic number is users, and those people will either A) be competent enough to research the issue, find the fix, and apply it, or B) go to an Apple store and say, "wtf?", and a genius will fix the problem is minutes.

Everyone else, without the issue, just needs to calm down. You don't need the latest build just because.

Well, that's just fine! The problem is: I have no problem in doing the restore and I'm now on 9A406 and still have the same problem... and you don't have apple stores around the world! A lot of countries do not have them, so no Genius guy for you to go like "wtf?"!

my iphone 4S has been in service for a week now (at the carrier). :(
I hope they will fix the problem

pfcosta is right. While I was able to install this new build, not everyone affected will know how to install it and we don't have any Apple stores in Ireland so does that mean anyone who doesn't go to these kinds of sites and isn't tech savvy and has this problem will just have to wait for 5.0.2 or 5.1 or whatever is coming next?

Do you have a carrier store? I mean this is ridiculous. You buy a product (I'm guessing online) in a part of the world with no Apple support, and when you have an issue you......what? Just sit there? If you can't fix this issue by getting a new sim and doing a full clean restore to the latest build, RETURN THE PHONE, and get a new one. Whining about it on a forum gets you no where and it should be occurring to you by now that you have a 1 in 1 million defective unit.

Actually, you can generally find a few service providers in countries that don't have an Apple retail store. In your case, here's the list for Dublin: http://www.apple.com/ie/buy/locator...=IRL&lat=53.344104&lng=-6.2674937&gCountry=IE

I'd say my phone battery life improved significantly after this one. Charged overnight, unplugged at 9AM, after 3 hours playing Infinity Blade II, and some normal mobile usage, I still have 45% at 8PM.

Will keep on eye for the next few days.

I've had this problem on previous Iphones...

Am I the only one who's had this problem on every version of the Iphone? I've seen it on the original Iphone, the 3G and the 3GS. Somehow it seemed to disappear every time I upgraded the firmware, but only to come back after a few months...

Getting tired with all of the problems the 4s has been having.

To be honest, (and I'm sure many will disagree, but it's just my opinion) I saw a guy with an iPhone in a queue to a checkout yesterday, I could see it was an iPhone due to the icons, and I though to myself, oh, that's a bit of an old one.

Yet when I took more notice, it was actually an iPhone 4

Sorry, it's just starting to look like an old boring design now.

Apple really need to freshen the while phone up, the main display, let's be honest, looks almost exactly the same as it did on the day the 1st iPhone launched. It may work, and people are used to it, but let's face it. It's getting tired.

Apple can't stick with this "desktop?" for another 5 or 10 years can they?

Some of you think you know a lot more than you really do belittling people because you think they do not know how to troubleshoot issues on their own. I have had 2 phones with the problem and it's just not a small issue where you have signal problems once in a while. It gets to the point the phone will no longer work at all even after clean no backed up restores with a new sim card. The people at the people at the genius bar don't even know or acknowledge the issue exists. They told me it was a problem with applications on the phone. I asked them why it would not work after a clean restore with no apps and new sim and they didn't have an answer. The two 4s I have now are working fine still, but I will still use this update just in case.

I'm surprised by how many people in this thread don't realize you can "upgrade" to even the same exact build that you already have by holding option or alt when you click the Update button.

You just have to manually reselect the file, the build doesn't matter. No downgrading or restoring necessary, guys.

iOS 5.1 beta 2 solves battery issues

All I can say is my battery stopped draining like crazy as soon as I installed OS 5.1 beta 2 on my iPhone 4S. Back to easily be able to make it through a day or more with heavy use.

Delta Updates?

I thought one feature of the new iOS was to be able to do minor incremental updates and not have to do major updates...

That should make something like this relatively minor. And it should have a new number if there are changes, you shouldn't have to know the version and the 4 digit hex code. 5.0.1b would work just fine....

New iOS 5.0.1 Build 9A406 Intended to Fix 'No SIM Card' Errors on iPhone 4S

I totally disagree...

I live in Vietnam, and ordered my iPhone 4S online from the Singapore Store.
I put my previous Sim from my iP4 and set up the iP4S up to date.
and started having Provider Signal Problems and Sim Problems too.
Took it to my Vietnamese street-corner iPhone Specialist -
Zakka Mobile Shop, 386 Vo Van Tan, P5, Q3, HCMC, Vietnam, Tel 848-38181402
- The staff took out my Sim Card, looked at it and announced to me that the Chip is an Old Chip Design. I need to get my Provider to re-issue My number using the Latest Sim Card with the Latest Chip Design. All of Vietnam's iPhone street IT knows this and share with each other!
And that is all to it.

Please refer to my attached photo.

I took my 4s that was crashing itself to into a coma every few days with kernel panics to get swapped today.

I told the "genius" my long winded story of the past 3 weeks with this on going problem, including how i called apple care and how i did a dfu restore to fix the problem. I did some test on it came back, and told me "wow, my computer is telling me exactly what you just told me. Usually people come up with some crazy lies, and then we catch them up when the diagnostic is ran".

i wasn't amused. I didnt even want to be there. I told him with a blank face, "I NEED MY PHONE TO WORK PROPERLY."

Anyways, i got a replacement, and it had 5.0 on it. I got home tonight, and expected to get the new build of 5.01, but it was the 905 build.

oh well.

PMZ,
Looking at your history, you must know everything!!! I wish I could have found you to advise me how to fix my iPhone 4S when I was having this problem with my phone.

I am fortunate enough to have both a carrier store and an apple store in my area. I am not a cell phone engineer nor a software engineer but I do repair electronics to the component level for a living. After updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 5.0.1, the phone started getting "No Service" after phone went idle for about 15-30 minutes in multiple different locations that I have had perfect service in since iPhone launch. To get service back I would have to turn phone off/on or airplane mode on/off. Then, until phone went idle again, I had full bars of service. At times, when the phone displayed "No Service", I could make and receive calls. I contacted Apple about this problem, they said it was the SIM card. Got a new SIM card, the problem was still there. Contact apple again, this time it was a carrier tower problem. I have AT&T issue a service ticket in my area to check the towers. AT&T says towers are good, must be an Apple problem. Apple says it is because I restored phone from a backup and I have corrupted data on my computer. I did DFU restore on phone and set up as brand new phone. Problem still there. Long story short is that AT&T says that it is Apple's problem, Apple says it's carrier problem etc. I had 3 new SIM cards and 3 4S's is this 3 week period. Finally, with nobody acknowledging a problem and no solution in sight, I switched back to my old iPhone that had worked perfectly for years. Now this phone was getting a "No Service" message as well. I could turn 3G off and the phone was fine. The iPhone 4S doesn't have the option to turn off 3G. So it was more of a carrier problem than an iPhone problem in my opinion, from the steps that I had to take on my own to troubleshoot the issue because Apple nor AT&T would acknowledge an issue. This was very annoying. My question is this though: Why won't the phone automatically switch to the 2G network if 3G is not available? It seems to me, my problem was more with the carrier 3G network but I would think that the phone would go to 2G if 3G wasn't available. In my opinion, Apple also has an issue. Nobody will say anything though. People all over the world are having this problem on multiple carriers. There is one thing in common: the iPhone. I am very disappointed in the way Apple has handled all of the issues with iPhone 4S. Apple seems more concerned about the bottom line now than customer care. This will probably be my last iPhone. I am wondering if anybody else has had this problem in the US on AT&T.

9A406 hasn't resolved signal loss issue

Experiencing same issue here in South Africa with new 64G iPhone4S received from MTN. The signal goes away after some strange click noises are heard while trying to place a call. Then the call shows as failed and the signal goes out for a few minutes, sometimes for longer unless I turn it off/on again. It seemed to me it happened more often after using Siri, so I disabled Siri. It worked until I used voice control to make a call and again the same clickety sounds came on and the signal dropped.
I went to my telco MTN, and already a couple of guys had been in to complain only 3 days after the phone came out here with same issue. They did a micro-sim swap for me but from same batch as it's the only one they had. The 2nd sim failed completely (no signal at all). A 3rd sim was issued which I am running now and still giving me intermittent fault as above.
Oh, and I did the full restore and the IOS5.0.1 (9A406) update that came out 2 days ago. No joy there.
Apple, what is going on here?
Siri = Hal...???

9a406 started a new problem. Once cellular data switch is turned on, it won't immediately connect to 3G signal. The workaround for this is to toggle Airplane mode on and off. After that it will connect to 3G.

I've been dealing with this problem for some weeks now, and it keeps losing signal every 5 minutes now. Today I have installed iOS 5.1 beta 2 and it worked fine for 3-4 hours, but now when I tried to call someone I got Call Failed again, and now it keeps happening once again every 5 minutes...

Hi,

Problem solved!

After going almost mad with the 4S loosing carrier every few minutes or giving me SIM error problems (the update from apple didn't solve this problem)

I phoned a tech guy from my telco provider that I know and he told me that my problem was already been reported and that apple had provided a solution, also that I should change my SIM card for one of those new micro-SIM cards (mine was one of those that you cut with a machine to produce the micro-SIM).

Well the update didn't solved it but the new micro-SIM is working fine, no more problems.

Thanks GOD!

The reason this is still 5.0.1 is there was not a code change, just a config data change... The OTA update mechanism doesn't deal with this type of update yet - though it will in the future.

Backup and restore in iTunes will result in the new build being installed. 5.1 will include the changes as well in a couple of weeks.

Build 9A406 also does not work for me

I've been having the "no SIM card" or "invalid SIM card" error ever since I got my iPhone 4S in Japan the day it was released. The Apple Store employees told me that the problem was a software issue and to just wait for an update. Well, this new build still doesn't work for me.

On a slightly different note, my iPhone 4 (US - AT&T version) battery drains very quickly (over night usually), but won't update to 9A406 (still on 9A405) build. Is this build specific to iPhone 4S?
