I didn't like at first, but now that I think more about it, the switch is hard to reach when using the Apple iPad case, so the new rotation is much more convenient.

I got an Apple case yesterday.

No it's not. It's dead easy to access the switch with the official Apple case.

Perhaps your case has an incorrect cut out in the side it?

I don't get it, why would handing it to someone need an orientation lock? "Let me show you" hand it to them... Seems simple to me.

Chef Jay

As someone already mentioned, when you hand the iPad to someone it tends to spin. And although you and I may be used to it, many aren't, so often people tend to be confused by the changing orientation.

So true, Amazing Iceman, so true.

You know, a mute switch was originally intended from day one on the iPad if you look back at the initial documentation from Apple. People whined when the updated pre-release promo materials came out and it had been changed to an orientation lock.

"Give me back my mute switch," they cried.

But in the end it didn't take them long to get used to the physical orientation lock, for now, many stomp their feet and pout like little girls at just how unfair this world is to suddenly take it away, and some have even threatened to forsake the long-awaited iOS 4 update and stick with 3.2 to really spite Apple something good! Imagine...

There have just been so many if these annoying threads, and now this one under the guise of iOS somehow "breaking" an iPad. Ugh.

No offense intended to anyone here personally, but MUTE SWITCH WHINERS MUST DIE. Just sayin'. :)

The mute button mutes notifications. It's meant for when you're watching a video or listening to music so you won't have sounds playing over it. Also if you go to a meeting or classes or something it's useful to have a quick way to mute notifications.

Just because you don't see the use doesn't mean people are weird for liking it.

That's actually how it works on the iPhone too, except it also mutes the ring and SMS sounds.
Oh, so they changed a hardware button from something that the vast majority of people use on a daily basis that draws a line between usability and pure rubbish with something that only takes place during movies only in case you have a lot of notifications only if that quarter a second notification (which will pop up anyway if it's a push notification) really bothers you. It's nothing but yet another dumb move by Apple, others recently being AirPrint cancellation, not allowing Blu-ray, and stupid limitations like lack of HDR and extra tones for 3GS even though it's purely a software feature.

Just because you don't use it doesn't mean no one else does. If you're watching a movie or listening to music with AirPlay, specially with loud stereo equipment, the notifications are really annoying. Also a lot of people need to quickly turn off notifications when in a meeting or classes (and yes, for some people that might be everyday) and as annoying as the software lock switch might you don't really NEED to do it quickly but you might need to mute the iPad quickly if something annoying starts beeping in an awkward situation.

Look, complain all you want but some people actually do enjoy the feature and Apple is not going to change it again. Deal with it.

I agree with the OP on this. It's difficult with the Apple case and I've had two of them.

That's beside the point. People want the freedom to choose. Not an unreasonable request on something they've bought.

If you want the freedom to choose, Apple is not the company to be buying products from: They are (in)famous for being "my way or the highway" with their products. Steve Jobs is a control freak and that permeates to their products.

However, it is precisely because he's a control freak that they bring out such good products: The attention to detail in Apple's products is what sets them apart from the competition and I've realised that you have to take the good with the bad because they're not going to change.

Yes, it can be annoying but that's Apple for you ;)

Still no file system that I can download files from the office to. I use Drop Box but want to be able to download files and I can tell this is never going to happen from Apple.

This will always limit the iPad for what I want it to do!:(

This is SO typical for Apple.

You appear to be trolling on every thread. Please stop.

If you don't like your iPad, just sell it.

I had always scratched my head wondering why minimalist minded Apple designers would devote a whopping extra switch to a function like screen lock as, logically, someone would have the screen on if they wanted to lock it and hence it could be accomplished with a screen icon. OTOH, one would be looking to mute sound while physically multi-tasking when the screen is off (e.g. answering the phone and listening to music on the IPad), so a hardware switch instead of looking for an icon that requires turning on the screen and wading through two or three screens makes sense.

And you know this... how, exactly? Apple make changes based on customer feedback. And there's a lot of customer feedback on this issue. Simple fix: add a setting for it. Then you can have your backward assed stupid number of volume controls (currently FOUR different methods on the iPad) and we can have our vastly more convenient orientation switch (currently only one method on the iPad, which went from wonderfully easy to annoyingly fiddly).

Everyone's happy. Right?

I'm not sure I understand you. If you want to mute the iPad you can press down on the volume, or you can hold down on the volume, or you can double tap and swipe and use the volume slider, or you can tap the screen and use the in-app volume control. Why bury something that only has ONE control in an annoying-to-get-to place, and then dedicate a whole bunch of buttons on the side of the device to the exact same function - altering volume in one way or another?

I just don't get it, but I feel like I'm missing something, seriously. Can someone explain simply and clearly, without snark or smugness, why there needs to be two mute controls and a regular volume control on the side of my iPad?

Wasn't there a camera app that was removed because you could use the volume buttons to activate the shutter? Wasn't it removed because it's confusing to the user?

I find this worse because they're permanently changing an advertised feature.

Ohhhh, it's a notification thing. Well... how about this - turn off your notification sounds in the Settings app. I mean, notifications pop up on the screen all the time. Why do you need a sound as well, especially when people are clearly using their iPads for media playback so much?

The thing is that probably as many people used the Orientation Switch as you claim are being regularly abused by loud notifications (that they set up to play sounds in the first place btw). And we consider the easy access of that switch to have been extremely well thought out as it's used regularly.

If you want to turn off your notification sounds before playing music or a movie, then go into settings and do it. It's a one time thing at the start of the movie, and a one time thing at the end. Locking orientation is something I want and need to do many many times over the course of a day and it is a MASSIVE ball ache to dig into the menus to do it.

Wow, turns out I can be just as patronising as those I'm arguing with. Eurgh, internet arguments, absolutely and utterly pointless. Why do I take the bait!?

Yeah, just ignore the fact that a lot of people use it to quickly mute the iPad when in classes, meeting, etc., it's not just about movies. And guess what? When the switch locked the orientation that's exactly what I had to do. And I didn't complain nearly as much as you people do. I gave my feedback to Apple and that was it. And I'm happy that it's now a mute switch but it wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't.

And you know what else? I understand that people have different needs and opinions. I never said that your opinion on the switch was wrong, just that there is a reason for it to be a mute switch and a lot of people actually like it and find it useful.

No. The developers wanted to add that feature to the app and Apple rejected it, and gave user confusion as the reason. So the developers went against their agreement and added the feature through a back door, so Apple removed the app.

Still prefer the orientation switch! Much easier if I'm playing a game and want to keep the orientation to landscape.

Apple should cite themselves for "user confusion" because they've clearly created that by changing the function of this switch. Not only that but they call it a "mute" switch when it doesn't even mute the device, it only mutes notifications. For someone like me who has no notifications turned on, this function is completely useless.

Would have been so much better if the original camera app would allow you to zoom in and out by pressing the volume buttons.

Apple intended all along for this to be a mute switch, but when the iPad came out, since there was no multitasking tray, they made it an orientation lock temporarily.

Apple is not the company you go to if you want choice.

The mute switch was a dumb idea. If you ask me, I thought the orientation lock switch made the iPad a bit more special over the iPod touch and iPhone. Now I have to go to a multitasking bar, swipe, then press a button. Normally I wouldn't complain but I have made it habit to take advantage of the switch before iOS 4 when reading a book or watching a movie on my side, for example.

It seems like this was something that was changed for the sake of conformity with the rest of the iOS line. The iPad, however, is missing voice control so the whole theory is kaput.

My two cents.
