DocAS 4.1 is coming soon.

DocAS 4.1 is coming soon.
A big user experience enhancement release.

Yesterday i spent the whole evening on testing DocAS and here are some of my impressions:

★ File Manager ★

✔ Import/Export documents with many different sources: Box.net, Dropbox, iDisk, Google_Docs , WebDav, FTP Server, Email, Embedded browser, URL download, iTunes File Sharing, Photo Library, Open-in with other Apps

tested google docs and dropbox and it worked just fine - great!

✔ Drag and Move supporting to move/organize the files between folders (Thumbnail view mode only)

the overall ui design is very sleek but still functional. you dont need much time to get used to it and the workflow is very simple.

✔ Drag to merge 2 documents(PDF and notebook only)

maybe this is a bit too easy? i'd prefer a checkbox that asks me how i want to get my document merged: - document a in front of document b
- document b in front of document a

thats mainly because i am used that i can "push" the icon aways when i float with another one over it (e.g. the homescreen of iOS)

it works quite well, but if the pdf files are big it takes like forever and/or crashes... but its ok as it wont happen quite often to merge 2 400 pages pdf files;)

✔ Clone document
✔ Advanced search for document or folder
✔ Sorting document by name, date, favorite

worked quite well

★Document reader ★
✔ Support most popular file types
• PDF
• MS Office (PPT, Word, Excel…)
• iWork (Pages, Keynote document)
• Text/RTF
• HTML
• Jpeg, PNG, BMP… images

i just have the lite version, so i just tested the pdf functionality (it supports just a limited amount of documents)

the app is still not retina ready and thats why the documents look horrible! but im pretty sure that this will be fixed with the next update!

✔ Text search in PDF document
✔ Thumbnail view is supported

the text search works quite well, but im not pleased with the thumbnail view!

as the thumbnail view is the only option to scroll fast through your documents it is just too small! it would be great if there where two sizes of this thumbnail view!

✔ Swipe to turn page

i dont really like the animation of the swiping... somehow its too slow...

i prefer when you can swipe to the next page to the right and it slides in

★ Close-up Handwriting with smooth ink engine ★
✔ Equipped with the best handwriting engine for smooth, efficient drawing with great pen strokes and amazing ink, it will show surprised writing experience to you as actual pen and paper writing

if you compare it with the handwriting engine of paper by 53 youll see that its not really the best ;)

✔ Simple and clean close-up handwriting panel

this is it! thats exactly how it has to be done! a clean close-up handwriting panel!!!

BUT!

i guess that there are many more people that write with their right hand, so it would be better to put the handwriting box on the right side, because then your palm could rest outside the touchscreen!

and the edges of the box are a bit annoying... if you are writing and you come too close to the right edge, the box will move entirely to the right...

but again, if you put the box to the right side this wouldnt be a problem... (the most of us write from left to right ;)

✔ Resizable zoom ratio
✔ Smart scroll and line-switch

thats nice, too!

✔ New smooth Handwriting engine to make beautiful writing

as i said, there are better handwriting engines!

i use a pen for writing and the zoom box for close-up writing makes perfect sense for smaller annotations, but the linewidth of the pen is too damn thick!

i didnt find an option for changing the pen-thickness and thats why my written words are just too bulky!

with the close-up feature i can write with smaller letters, but i cant see anything because they are too thick ;)

if you write quite slowly the lines get a bit sloppy.... but if your strokes are fast the lines get beautiful... so there is a bit of space for optimising the engine

✔ Swipe to turn page conveniently when handwriting
✔ Wrist Guard(Palm rest)

the wrist guard is something that didnt work with me... but thats not a big problem if the close up box would be on the right side

★Advanced Text note is supported
✔ Bold, Italic and alignment support
✔ Unique and convenient Text panel design
✔ Resizable Text input panel

this works very well - good job!

✔ Handwriting & Typing
✔ Shapes with line, rectangle, circle/oval…

didnt find the option for the line, rectangle and circle... will have to take a better look tonight

overall conclusion:

im very pleased so far! there is a bit space for improvement in speed of the workflow (fast scrolling with bigger thumbnails and faster swiping though pages without animations), but i like the overall performance quite well...

i have many pdf files and its great that i can make handwritten annotations!
the best feature is the close-up box for handwriting! this is an absolute killer feature in my opinion!

after the update for the retina screen and the thickness of the handwritten lines this thing gets quite well

i'd definetly give it 4 of 5 stars (where 5 stars would mean a totally flawless and bugless experience... practically not reachable)

(after some improvements it would have the potential for 4,5 stars out of 5 - which would be excellent!)

im definetly looking for the new update

Very nice improvements, IMO you're 90% of the way there.

First let me say that I appreciate you offering a Lite version. I seems very few software developers have the courage to do that. It's pretty clear that many developers hide behind Apples "make you crawl through broken glass to get a refund policy" to sell incomplete and buggy software. I commend you and IMO it builds your credibility in the marketplace.

Really like your new PDF rendering engine. Seems much faster. Although for some reason it only shows the pages about 90% of the full screen size? Also what's the blue tick marks down the right-hand siz

I love to buy your app but at this point I know I wouldn't use it. While I love your thumbnail interface, the thumbnails are simply too large. There no way I could navigate a 100+ pdf files with a view of 6 at a time. I'd be forever flipping back and forth. Ibooks lets me see 25, can you do something like that?

Please make an option to turn off that annoying page flipping eye-candy.

I can't comment on your markup tools as the only PDF editing I do is simply deleting pages, which you handle nicely.

I also very much like the ability to email a page out of a PDF.

Pen tools seemed to work well with the limited testing that I did.

For some reason the thumbnails didn't generate for the jpg and pdf files I downloaded from my ftp server until I opened the file one time. This is not good if I download 25 files to then need to go back and open each one.

Great work. Keep it up. You've got the foundation to be a contender.

Lots of nice new features! Did you add subfolders yet? I have many files - so it would be very difficult to organize without subfolders.

Have you considered giving the user the ability to have a list of filenames not just the large icons that can only display 4 or 6 (landscape vs portrait)?

the text search works quite well, but im not pleased with the thumbnail view!

as the thumbnail view is the only option to scroll fast through your documents it is just too small! it would be great if there where two sizes of this thumbnail view!

now with retina resolution it seems to be the right size, so forget what i told you before.

but there is stilla small issue:
in the thumbnail view the "delete page" button on the thumbnails is not retina resolution - just saying ;)

issue: if the width of the writing box gets too small, the whole upper menue bar dissapears

issuse: if i search the text nothing happens?

issue: i open up a new notebook, select a background, use the zoom tool and take the smallest possible selection (maximum zoom) and the whole bow turns black when i start writing

as soon as i drag the box just a bit bigger its fine again

nice update

keep up the good work

4 stars; what's needed for 5 stars

DocAS 4.1 is available in App store!!

Big user experience enhancement release is available now.

Having used nearly all the major note taking apps (e.g., Note Taker HD, Goodnotes, Upad, Noteshelf, Notes Plus, Notability, Remarks, neu.Notes+, Penultimate, and Notify), I can safely say that with version 4.1 DocAS is now one of the best of the bunch. However, there are a still some (mostly minor) issues to resolve, and (some fairly significant) features to implement and/or modify.

As a college professor, I use these note taking apps to present my lectures in real-time with my iPad by means of an overhead projector. Consequently, it is essential for the screen displayed by the projector to be uncluttered by the user interface of the note taking app. This means that video mirroring is an inadequate solution. Several of the note taking apps remedy this by offering VGA out: Note Taker HD, Goodnotes, Upad, Noteshelf, net.Notes+. Alas, many of the apps do not (though some have promised to add VGA out at some undetermined date), such as: Notes Plus, Notability, Remarks, and DocAS. Of the apps that have this feature, probably Note Taker HD and Goodnotes implement it best, though neither is perfect, and each has some good element that the other doesn't. So, a combination of their two solutions would likely be best.

In addition to VGA out, a cornerstone of note organization is folders. Some of the apps, such as Note Taker HD, allow sub-folders. Others, such as Goodnotes, do not. DocAS does not. It needs to add this.

So, in sum, these are the two most crucial features from my perspective as an educator that DocAS would need to add to propel it from 4 stars to 5 stars and ahead of all its competitors:

(1) VGA out done properly. This means, at a minimum, it should be smooth and fast, not laggy. In addition, it should allow output of only part of the screen, which Note Taker HD does semi-decently.

(2) Sub-folders

A few other more minor requests:

-better inking (see the option for variable stroke weight inking in the latest versions of Notability and Remarks; should be a choice between this and standard inking)

-additional shapes/objects that are reselectable and remanipulatable, such as tables, graphs, a greater variety of lines, arrows, filled in shapes, etc.

-faster catch up of the zoom window when it auto-advances (this is on an iPad 3)

-margins for zoom return

-quicker means to smoothly resize the zoom window (e.g., how about pinching outside of the zoom window)

-a second option for copy/cut/paste of ink aside from the rectangle tool, such as a lasso tool

Keep of the good work! Your app is on the verge of being the best note taking app in the app store. I would be more than happy to recommend it to my colleagues, if these additional features are added.

Hi, i dont know if you app support but a good feature that i like and need is for example, i have a PDF, and can add blank pages on with, for example, i get a exercise pdf in school, need to add a blank page so i can make my notes etc.

Can your software do that?

thanks
Flavio

I believe I saw that function. You should download the free version and check it out.

Need Sub Folders

Hey there. Just bought the app based on this thread and have found that you dont allow sub folders. This is an important feature. Should also allow to sync to drop box like notability can.

EDIT: You also need to add highlighting. And the Notepad style paper with he Date should auto fill with today's date.

This may seem weird but my least favorite thing about this app is that it says DocAS...eader under the icon. I wish it just said DocAS under the icon. The way it is now I hide it in a folder. Other than that I really like this app and the only error that I have encountered so far is sometimes when I use the magnified writing it fills the entire box. Keep up the good work!

Is there a support page where we can add bugs/feature requests? I work for an engineering firm and we could use an app like DOCAS to mark up drawings.
However, I'm running into a few issues (on an iPad 1):

Large PDF's (>2MB) seem to either crash the app or show up as a blank page.

Changing between text and zoom handwriting will occasionally cause a crash.

PDF page size is being forced (scaled) to A4 portrait. We dont want to adjust the page size or rotation.

The thinest line size for handwriting is too large. However, this might be because the page has been scaled; so fix that issue and it might be ok.

There is no hand rest when in zoom handwriting mode. See notability app.

The scroll right button in zoom handwriting mode jumps too far; it should be relative to the autoscroll area, so that it shows part of where I left off.

The page backgrounds look very blurry in zoom handwriting mode. Notability has these perfect IMO.

Allow batch upload/download; especially for FTP transfer.

Allow export in the edit screen. Currently, I have to save and go back to the folders screen and select the file to export.

Have you tried the autocadWS app? Can load DWG files and mark them up as well as a bunch of other functions.

Its awesome and free.

DocAS is very good, I like that I can see a single page in landscape where most other readers want to give me a cute book format. There are a few more things left to be added, though.

A pdf reader should be able to deal with files of many pages conveniently. At least one reader can give you a separate navigation tool for the table of contents that some pdfs contain, allowing the reader to just tap to jump to the beginning of a topic. Failing that, it would be handy to be able to follow internal links embedded in some files.

For content creation, I personally would like to be able to type a text block and give it a border or background.

And if I am just reading, give me a full-screen option with no upper or lower borders (single tap on the page to toggle).

As a previous poster said, almost there.
