Not having a laminated display is a massive step backwards. Before Apple stated laminated them I had nothing but issues where specs of dust would find its way in under the glass. Laminating that fixed that issue immediately and that’s never been a problem since.

Between this and the 1st Gen pencil just WTF are you doing Apple?

Tim need get his act together or stand down. Far too many iPhone choices, far too many iPad choices. New iPhones still use lightning while the new Apple TV remote does USB-C, first gen pencil is horrific and shouldn’t have even been a decision to use.

Apple just doesn’t seem to know what it’s doing lately.

The new entry-level iPad display lacks the anti-reflective coating that helps minimize glare in light, and it only supports sRGB colors, not the industry-wide standard P3 wide color.

On its website, Apple lists the new entry-level iPad with the same Liquid Retina display as the fifth-generation iPad Air with 2360 x 1640 resolution at 264ppi (pixels-per-inch). Unlike the iPad Air, however, the new entry-level iPad does not support P3 wide color, does not have an anti-reflective coating, and is not a fully laminated display, according to Apple's website.

The new entry-level iPad also lacks support for the second-generation Apple Pencil, still only supporting the first-generation Apple Pencil. Since the new iPad has a USB-C port, customers will have to use an adapter to charge their Apple Pencil with their iPad. Apple is selling an adapter for $9, but one is also now included in the box with the first-generation Apple Pencil.

The new iPad is like the iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus, not worth buying for the price, better off getting an iPad Air 4 for the same money or air 5 for a little bit more

Faux outrage is funny to listen to though. Like stuff is just made up. I for one am outraged that it lacks the features of a more expensive product. What about the m1? It lacks the m1. Shouldn’t the cheaper product be the better product?
And what about the surging dollar making products more expensive in Europe? Clearly an evil plot by big tech
It's not that simple. The new iPad is a poorly conceived product, period. It is no longer suited for education without a headphone jack (yes, I know about the dongles...). I am an Apple enthusiast. I worked for them for 8 years. But I am not, nor will ever be a fanboy. This is the worst offering since the 3rd Gen iPad.

Then why remove headphones jack? Rather essential for classrooms.
Did it? Didn’t see that in the article. Yeah I’d think wired headphones would be useful for education, but then I think wired headphone are very useful in general. Never been a fan of the Bluetooth push.

Looks like this iPad was designed by subtraction with a focus on hitting a certain price point regardless of the means, not by thinking about what would create the best pared-down package for price sensitive buyers. Sad.
This is pretty much how the new Apple operates in making their lower end products. Old designs, cutting corners, etc. Less and less efforts in making a great product.

It’s in contrast with the old Apple. Take the iPod for example. Apple has to compete with the mainstream flash players. They didn’t just cut stuff out off the regular iPod. They reinvent the lineup to create the mini, nano, and shuffle.

I'd say that the new iPad is for 'regular' people who don't know what a laminated display is, nor do they care.

This is 100% not to be patronising either.

A 64GB iPad 10th gen looks like being a great device for those that want to Zoom/FT relatives and watch streaming TV on plus a little bit of a light productivity and games (and who want a device that will last quite a few years).

I think it's fair to say that the new iPad is not for most people who frequent forums like this!

Doubly sad because this is the exact opposite of the approach Apple has historically taken. Apple is supposed to be the slightly more expensive but best option, even at the low end.

The focus used to be on the user experience which is what made them a trillion dollars. Now the focus is on that money instead of the user experience. Usually when a company starts doing that, the money pile goes down with the user experience while the accountants are wondering why.

Apple is supposed to be the high quality option though whether people understand the tech or not. They may not know what a laminated display is but they will notice the glare from not having one.

I agree it will still be fine for most people, but as with just about everything else they released this year, the omissions are odd.

I like the design and the removal of the home button.
I dislike the lack of stereo speakers and the price.

And why the hell it just doesn’t support Pencil 1 AND 2.

Personally the Pencil 1 support is welcome for me because I just bought one this year for my 2018 iPad on promotion.

But don’t make such a mess of the lineup.
Shouldn’t be so difficult:

Normal use : ipad
Smal form factor : mini / air
“Pro” use: the pro line

Support all pencils, if not for costumer care, do it for the environment.

Anyway, the battery on my 2018 iPad is still going good. I start to notice some hiccups with apps here and there.

When I need to upgrade to a newer model because of iPadOS updates and/or it becomes more sluggish to use in the future I will go for the 2021 model, as much as I hate the home button, the price of the new model is not even funny anymore.
I don’t know if this is the case, but if the new camera placement made it impossible to put the Apple Pencil 2 hardware in the same area of the iPad, would that be acceptable?

Of course, I hope that’s not the case because that means they may be having trouble moving the camera to the side on the others, and I reeeally want all of them to have the landscape camera. But if it couldn’t yet happen in the new iPad for this reason, I can understand.

I agree with you on simplifying the lineup, I think it’s hideous right now. Just have iPad (including mini size), iPad Pro (s sizes). I always remember what Steve Jobs asked upon he’s early return, when assessing Apple’s unwieldy product line: “Which one would I recommend to my friends and family?” I’d it’s too difficult to answer that question, then the product line may be getting out of hand.

Two words: Educational Market.

Cash strapped, and kids are generally not doing proof work on their iPads in grade school.

They'll sell plenty. We're not the target market.

Exactly!

I thought that the 'iPad' was THE iPad, and the Air was a lighter version with the pro being a more muscular version. Oh, but now it's the 'Air (head)' that is THE iPad, and the actual iPad is the 'special needs kids' in the house?

Wow, what a fall from grace. The actual iPad is a cobbled hobbled restricted restrained mess? Wow, I never would have expected to see that happen.

The actual iPad is a joke? Sad...

Love the image though. Seems the Mini rates over the iPad now too? It came out of the box with a lot of pluses, nicked by being throttled though.

Wow...

Steve would have never allowed this

I think the whole pencil thing wouldn't have been a big thing with him, but the idea of making it more elegant might have appealed. It would have been a product of his 'reality distortion field'. 'Hey, lets come up with a 'pencil' that does everything. Let the committee figure out how to charge it. It's not a 'stylus', it's 'smarter'!'?

Plus steve would be what, almost 70? Dementia does interesting things to people...

I think the entire iPad lineup is a mess but why is it news that a cheaper product doesn’t have all the features of a more expensive product?

This lineup is such a mess and makes me want to keep my 2017 iPad for anther 5 years.
There should only be two categories of iPads: iPad (10.9 inch and mini) and iPad Pro (11inch and 12.9 inch). The only reason the iPad Air exist is so they can use terrible specs for the regular iPad and upsell you to the iPad Air. What a joke.

Exactly. A simple and easy to understand lineup is what brought the Mac back from the dead during Steve Jobs’ second tenure at Apple.

The bean counters have taken over the asylum. 🙀

I didn't use headphones with my iPad for class ever. Perhaps it's become essential with pandemic "learning"?

Then why remove headphones jack? Rather essential for classrooms.

The only time I've ever used headphones was in a college level Spanish class. We all wore headphones to listen to the lesson and to pronounce the words we were learning at that time. The headsets had microphones and the prof could 'tune in' to any single student and listen, and correct them. It was like a booming voice from above, and he relished in the power it gave him. It was one of the worst classes I ever had, and the number of kids suspended from that class obliterated all time records for suspensions! (Yeah, I was suspended, but I brought a pair of Las Vegas dice which he 'stole' from me, and I was out)

But anyway...

A room full of iPads all playing their lessons would drive me nuts. Corded buds are less expensive so removing the jack would likely remove that model iPad from schools lists of approved equipment.

The naming conventions are the confusing part to me. That applies to the phones also. I would expect the mini to be the base model and cheapest or the air based on the macbook line.

but I don't get the complaints, since this is supposed to be the entry level device. It's not going to have the same features as a Pro. It's like expecting a base model Accord to have leather heated seats.

True, I guess I'm assuming that these devices will probably rarely leave the home, so screen glare won't be too much of an issue.

Maybe I don't feel that this will much of a problem, as I live in the UK, which often looks like Mordor on a good day.

California residents etc. may have a different experience!
