Still has the 5 GPU cores though so maybe just a different binning where the CPU couldn't clock as high but the GPU cores were all good?
Longer batter life… duh! It's unclear why Apple has downclocked the A15 chip in the iPad mini
Maybe in after sales cost like repairs or serviceDoes downclocking save apple money?
Chip shortage - maybe, they might want to make use of more chips per wafer, so lowering the bar on sustainable clock speed let’s them use more. I don’t think the Air is delayed though, just that it’s the mini’s turn this year and they will be updated on alternating years going forward.Maybe a global silicon and component shortage has something to do with it hence the delayed iPad Air 5 release.
Bigger devices don't offer the same grip in landscape mode for Action and Competitive games.I did not think of gamers, presuming they would prefer bigger screens anyhow. 🤔
Already ordered 2 and looking to order more for Christmas gifts, Apple hit the mini 6 with a good balance of power/performance and design imho. Price is always debatable but component shortages and cost have also gone up so live in reality.??? Citation please.
Maybe not to you. If the $329 iPad is a better utility:cost ratio for you, then have at it.
Not to go all micro economics on you, but there is not a right price for all people. The demand curve is sloped-- so there are people who will not buy because the price is higher than they personally can justify, and there are people would happily pay more than $499 and are getting a deal on this device.
Unless Apple sells precisely zero of these, then ignore what I said.
So basically I should wait until the next version? I plan on using it for basic things like browsing and maybe doing work/college.
If I was targeting gamers, the first would be a ProMotion display.Bigger devices don't offer the same grip in landscape mode for Action and Competitive games.
iPad air 4 is 27% wider (taller in portrait mode) and 56% heavier than iPad Mini 6. So not really a comfortable thing to hold for long hours.
It will have almost no effect on battery life in actual practice.I know this comment is going to be controversial, but I think it would be wise to have a slight underclock like this one on the iPhone 13 mini, to help even more on improving the batterylife.
Yes and more RAM, but they wouldn't have been able to put in all that they have so far for almost half the price of their cheapest Pro Motion device. If I was targeting gamers, the first would be a ProMotion display.
Maybe and I agree that 2020 was iPad Air 4 redesign then 2021 iPad mini 6 redesign and 2022 will be AW8 redesign is is for handled mobile devices not the Mac lineup. I suspect the Air 5 will get the led flash and CenterStage along with the iPhone 13 Pro A15 chip. I suspect an October silent release or possible a mention in the October presentation. People who want portable are not an Air customer but Apple does stretch out the buzz factor for each product release.Chip shortage - maybe, they might want to make use of more chips per wafer, so lowering the bar on sustainable clock speed let’s them use more. I don’t think the Air is delayed though, just that it’s the mini’s turn this year and they will be updated on alternating years going forward.
Because one is a tablet, and one is a phone. I want the smallest iPhone (which is why I bought a mini), and the smallest iPad, never once have I thought when using my iPad “this would be great on an unwieldy phone”.Apple artificially gimped the Mini 6 so it doesn't cannabalize the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Otherwise, what's the point of paying $1199 for 256GB iPhone 13 Pro Max if the $749 iPad Mini 6 Cellular has feature parity?
That's what I'm thinking too - they put the lower bin chips in the Mini and save the best ones for the 13 Pros (ditto for the regular 13 which gets a lower bin of GPU).Could be binning related
That is lame... They stick an overkill M1 in the iPad Pros and hamstring these.
I have the 11" iPad Pro (2018) and frankly your list makes me feel even better about that purchase. Might be the longest-lasting Apple product I'll have had in years, given that the A12X is still quite relevant, the screen is ProMotion, it has FaceID and continues to outperform much of Apple's tablet lineup.lets see...
- down clocked cpu
- 60hz only display
- 500 nits max brightness
- Inflated prices
- 64gb ram only on base
- 4gb system ram
- 2 speakers
My 2017, 10.5" iPad Pro has
- 120ghz ProMotion display
- 600 nits max brightness
- 4 speakers
- 4gb of system ram
I was really tempted to get the new mini because I love the form factor but they seemed to have crippled it so much that I will just pass.
Yeah this makes soo much sense 🙄 ProMotion just got announced on iPhone 13 Pro it’s not even on the iPad Air and you expect it to just show up on an iPad mini because yeah gaming. If people are doing serious gaming other options exists and on a portable device performance and battery life have to strike a balance, what is the point of having ProMotion and the device lasts 5-6 hours that would be a marketing fail as iPad always maintains if not extends the previous version battery life claim. More RAM again for the majority it would not see much of a benefit and the cost will drive it out of range. Good thing you don’t run Apple’s marketing department though there maybe a position with Samsung or Google’s marketing department for spec junkies but apply soon as you may receive competition from intel’s marketing team.Yes and more RAM, but they wouldn't have been able to put in all that they have so far for almost half the price of their cheapest Pro Motion device.
Rather than talk about arbitraries and opinions I'm going to use myself as an example…No there isn’t. When someone says something is “too expensive” they mean “its price is not warranted by what it does/is/provides.” And if you think it’s ”not properly justified,” please explain to us what product is out there that is comparable to this device but which is priced less.
I did not think of gamers, presuming they would prefer bigger screens anyhow. 🤔

How do you figure? mini 6 is a complete redesign from previous and R&D costs have to be gradually recouped. Now if it was the same previous shell then I could see your point but not so with a redesign. The next iPad mini 7 will come with base 128GB storage and a 512GB high end option. It’s an educated guess from previous and market projections.
