Maybe a global silicon and component shortage has something to do with it hence the delayed iPad Air 5 release.
Chip shortage - maybe, they might want to make use of more chips per wafer, so lowering the bar on sustainable clock speed let’s them use more. I don’t think the Air is delayed though, just that it’s the mini’s turn this year and they will be updated on alternating years going forward.

??? Citation please.

Maybe not to you. If the $329 iPad is a better utility:cost ratio for you, then have at it.

Not to go all micro economics on you, but there is not a right price for all people. The demand curve is sloped-- so there are people who will not buy because the price is higher than they personally can justify, and there are people would happily pay more than $499 and are getting a deal on this device.

Unless Apple sells precisely zero of these, then ignore what I said.
Already ordered 2 and looking to order more for Christmas gifts, Apple hit the mini 6 with a good balance of power/performance and design imho. Price is always debatable but component shortages and cost have also gone up so live in reality.

So basically I should wait until the next version? I plan on using it for basic things like browsing and maybe doing work/college.

Since Mini seems to get upgraded only every few years, you may be out of college before there's a next version. ;)

For "basic things," this is probably power overkill. There's always a few things people gripe about each release of everything. If you wait for perfection as called by this whole crowd, you will never buy anything.

This is a very impressive iPad Mini. It is the best Mini ever. If you need this size, get it and enjoy it for years. I personally think Mini is the BEST iPad of all sizes (for my uses anyway).

For "doing work/college," you might want to visit an Apple store and try some of the bigger-screened iPads. The extra screen RE may be helpful for productivity tasks like those. That could be a real consideration for how you want to use an iPad.

Bigger devices don't offer the same grip in landscape mode for Action and Competitive games.

iPad air 4 is 27% wider (taller in portrait mode) and 56% heavier than iPad Mini 6. So not really a comfortable thing to hold for long hours.
If I was targeting gamers, the first would be a ProMotion display.

Apple artificially gimped the Mini 6 so it doesn't cannabalize the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Otherwise, what's the point of paying $1199 for 256GB iPhone 13 Pro Max if the $749 iPad Mini 6 Cellular has feature parity?

I know this comment is going to be controversial, but I think it would be wise to have a slight underclock like this one on the iPhone 13 mini, to help improving the batterylife even further.

Yes and more RAM, but they wouldn't have been able to put in all that they have so far for almost half the price of their cheapest Pro Motion device.

Maybe and I agree that 2020 was iPad Air 4 redesign then 2021 iPad mini 6 redesign and 2022 will be AW8 redesign is is for handled mobile devices not the Mac lineup. I suspect the Air 5 will get the led flash and CenterStage along with the iPhone 13 Pro A15 chip. I suspect an October silent release or possible a mention in the October presentation. People who want portable are not an Air customer but Apple does stretch out the buzz factor for each product release.

Because one is a tablet, and one is a phone. I want the smallest iPhone (which is why I bought a mini), and the smallest iPad, never once have I thought when using my iPad “this would be great on an unwieldy phone”.

Also, “gimped”? Really? Come on.

That is lame... They stick an overkill M1 in the iPad Pros and hamstring these.

iPad OS is simply burdensome on the whole line. My iPad Pro 2018 can't even break a sweat and that's a 3 year old device.

I mean, it's future proof, and I get it. I'll probably keep the thing for at least 5 years and never notice it's aging.

I can't see how a iPad is doing anything worth with an M1 chip in it. It's like taking a souped up 1000HP drag car and just revving the engine for no reason.

lets see...
- down clocked cpu
- 60hz only display
- 500 nits max brightness
- Inflated prices
- 64gb ram only on base
- 4gb system ram
- 2 speakers

My 2017, 10.5" iPad Pro has
- 120ghz ProMotion display
- 600 nits max brightness
- 4 speakers
- 4gb of system ram

I was really tempted to get the new mini because I love the form factor but they seemed to have crippled it so much that I will just pass.
I have the 11" iPad Pro (2018) and frankly your list makes me feel even better about that purchase. Might be the longest-lasting Apple product I'll have had in years, given that the A12X is still quite relevant, the screen is ProMotion, it has FaceID and continues to outperform much of Apple's tablet lineup.

Maybe the full burst A15's are reserved for any upcoming iPad Air refresh?

Pretty sure iPad is more likely to have sustained/professional workflows versus a phone. So, on the phone, higher turbo/boost type speeds. On the tablet, slightly lower speeds meant for sustained load. Makes sense to me as a functional design choice. It’s not necessarily a binning or cost-cutting result.

Yeah this makes soo much sense 🙄 ProMotion just got announced on iPhone 13 Pro it’s not even on the iPad Air and you expect it to just show up on an iPad mini because yeah gaming. If people are doing serious gaming other options exists and on a portable device performance and battery life have to strike a balance, what is the point of having ProMotion and the device lasts 5-6 hours that would be a marketing fail as iPad always maintains if not extends the previous version battery life claim. More RAM again for the majority it would not see much of a benefit and the cost will drive it out of range. Good thing you don’t run Apple’s marketing department though there maybe a position with Samsung or Google’s marketing department for spec junkies but apply soon as you may receive competition from intel’s marketing team.

No there isn’t. When someone says something is “too expensive” they mean “its price is not warranted by what it does/is/provides.” And if you think it’s ”not properly justified,” please explain to us what product is out there that is comparable to this device but which is priced less.
Rather than talk about arbitraries and opinions I'm going to use myself as an example…

I'm a "computing professional" that has to support macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, basically a jack of all trades. So I need devices from "both sides" and when I see the new iPad mini I think fab… this is for me! That'll be perfect to kick my Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e out of my every day bag and I get a new iPad at the same time. Perfect thing for the perfect time. And then I see the 889€ price tag for the 256GB 5G version.

For me, form factor is important in this particular place however when I look at 889€ I need to consider I (well, my client that gave it to me as a Christmas present rather than *I*) bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ 256GB 5G for 50€ less and my S5e (everything is 128GB+ and LTE/5G) was less than half the price that's not particularly good value. So to put it lightly I thought "f*&# that s@#^!!" and did nothing.

So rather than say its too expensive I would probably say its low value comparatively to other things.

Don't get me wrong, the new iPad mini will kick the pants off of my S5e around the block and every way sideways but everything has its price.

Line is blurred. Bigger iPhone or smaller iPad, same same. I see the iPad Mini 6 Cellular as the Galaxy Note of iPhones with pen support plus I'd rather pay $749 for one integrated device vs buying a $1199 iPhone plus iPad even if Apple gimps the clock speed, RAM, etc.

How do you figure? mini 6 is a complete redesign from previous and R&D costs have to be gradually recouped. Now if it was the same previous shell then I could see your point but not so with a redesign. The next iPad mini 7 will come with base 128GB storage and a 512GB high end option. It’s an educated guess from previous and market projections.

Mini 7 launch date Spring 2024?
